Availability, menu names, widget choices, editing controls, and Always On Display behavior depend on your phone maker, model, Android or One UI version, region, and whether the feature has reached your device. Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI 7.0 or later have a documented widget flow. Pixel phones may have lock-screen widgets after Android 16 QPR2, but Google’s standard Pixel help pages still document clocks, shortcuts, notifications, and At a Glance separately. Check your software version first, then follow the instructions for your device.
Check compatibility before changing anything
Lock-screen widgets are a platform feature, but manufacturers decide how the editor opens, which widgets are offered, and whether widgets also appear on an Always On Display (AOD). Android Developers said in its March 2025 lock-screen-widget FAQ that the feature would be available in AOSP for phones and tablets starting with the release after Android 16 QPR1, while Pixel Tablets already had it. The same FAQ said manufacturers could customize the trigger and pre-set default widgets. That describes the platform direction, not a live compatibility list for every Android phone.

| Device or software situation | What is established | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy, One UI 7.0 or later | Samsung documents adding one or two lock-screen widgets and editing supported Brief widgets. | Exact labels, widget choices, and AOD options can vary by model, One UI release, and region. |
| Pixel with Android 16 QPR2 | A December 4, 2025 Android Authority report describes a lock-screen widget page and an enable switch. | Confirm that Widgets on lock screen appears under Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen. |
| Pixel on another Android release | Google’s Pixel help documents clock, shortcut, notification, and privacy controls, but not a general widget-add sequence on that page. | Look in the lock-screen settings and editor after installing the latest update offered for your model. |
| Other Android phones | Support depends on the manufacturer’s implementation and rollout. | Search the lock-screen editor for an Add widgets, Widgets, or similar control; do not assume a Pixel or Galaxy path applies. |
Also check the phone’s model and region. Samsung’s UAE instructions are specifically for One UI 7.0 or later, while its UK “Brief widgets” page was updated March 19, 2026 and notes that supported apps can change. Samsung’s US guide spans One UI 6.0 through 7.0, so two Galaxy phones can show different menus even when both are fully updated.
Know what counts as a lock-screen widget
A widget is a compact, glanceable panel supplied by an app, such as a battery, clock, reminder, or other supported information view. A lock-screen shortcut is a separate quick-launch control. On Pixel phones, Google documents shortcuts such as Camera, Wallet, Flashlight, and Do not disturb; changing those shortcuts does not add a widget.

The clock is another separate element. Google’s Pixel editor lets you change clock style, color, and size, but those controls are not a general third-party widget browser. At a Glance is also distinct: it can show items such as upcoming events, tasks, and weather, and only some Android devices place it on the lock screen. The full At a Glance experience is available on Pixel devices running Android 12 and later, although features can vary by language, country, or region.
How to add widgets on a Samsung Galaxy
One UI 7.0 or later: the lock-screen shortcut
- Wake the phone and go to the lock screen. Do not unlock it.
- Press and hold an empty area of the lock screen.
- Tap Add Widgets.
- Choose the widget you want. Samsung’s One UI 7 guide allows one or two widgets in this editor.
- Tap Done to save the layout.
If your lock-screen editor uses a different label, look for a Widgets or Add widgets area rather than assuming the feature is missing. Samsung notes that labels and icons can differ by software version.
Samsung’s Wallpaper and style route
Samsung’s UK support page gives a second route that is useful when the long-press editor does not expose the control:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Wallpaper and style.
- Select the current lock screen preview.
- Tap Add widgets.
- Select a supported widget to see its available styles.
- Choose a style, remove unwanted items with the minus icon, and tap Done.
This page calls the feature Brief widgets. Samsung says supported apps may be added, removed, or updated over time, and some apps can behave differently when placed on the lock screen. Therefore, an app that appears in one region or One UI build may not appear in another.

The Samsung US editor on One UI 6.0–7.0
Samsung’s US instructions describe a slightly different interface:
- Touch and hold the lock screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Swipe up to browse the available choices. Samsung gives Battery, Clock, and Reminder as examples.
- Choose a widget and then select any option the widget offers.
- Drag widgets to reorder them.
- Tap the minus icon to remove one.
- Tap Done.
The available options are widget-specific. If a widget has no style, size, or configuration choices, the editor cannot create them.
Edit, reorder, or remove a Galaxy widget
- Change the style: reopen the lock-screen editor, select the widget, and choose one of its displayed styles.
- Reorder: drag the widget to a different position when the editor shows handles or a movable card.
- Remove: tap the minus icon, then save with Done.
- Add another: return to Add Widgets or Widgets and choose an available slot. One UI 7’s documented flow supports one or two widgets.
Do not expect every installed app to offer a lock-screen panel. Samsung’s own documentation limits the list to supported apps and warns that support can change.

How to add widgets on a Pixel phone
Android 16 QPR2: the reported widget flow
Pixel lock-screen widgets require a version-specific qualification. Google’s current Pixel help page documents lock-screen customization but does not provide a general widget-add sequence. Android Authority reported on December 4, 2025 that Pixel-phone widgets arrived with Android 16 QPR2 and described this process:

- Tap Display & touch.
- Tap Lock screen.
- Turn on Widgets on lock screen.
- Return to the locked phone and swipe left from the lock screen to reach the widgets page.
- Press and hold a widget to enter edit mode.
- Use the available controls to resize, remove, add, or rearrange widgets. The report says the add control may appear after tapping a selected widget in edit mode.
This is secondary, dated reporting rather than a universal Google procedure. If your Pixel does not show the named setting, do not keep looking for a hidden gesture: the update may not be installed, your model may not have received the rollout, or the interface may differ. Confirm the Android build in Settings > About phone > Android version, install any update offered for the device, and check the lock-screen settings again.
Customize the Pixel clock and shortcuts separately
On Android 16 and higher, Google’s documented route for the clock is:
- Touch and hold an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Wallpaper & style.
- Swipe right to Lock screen.
- Swipe up.
- Tap Clock.
- Choose the clock style, color, and size.
- Tap Apply.
The same editor includes Shortcuts and lock-screen notification controls. These settings change built-in lock-screen elements; they do not prove that third-party widgets are enabled on the phone.

Customize what appears and where it appears
Resize and rearrange only when the editor supports it
The Pixel report specifically describes resizing, removing, adding, and rearranging from widget edit mode. Samsung’s documentation confirms style selection, reordering in the US editor, and removal with a minus icon, but it does not promise a resize control for every Galaxy widget. Treat controls shown on your phone as authoritative; a widget can expose fewer actions than another widget on the same device.
Choose information that works at a glance
A lock-screen panel should be readable without unlocking, but compact space makes dense or private information a poor fit. Start with a battery, clock, reminder, or similarly limited view, then inspect the preview from arm’s length. If a widget requires tapping through to a full app, expect the phone to request authentication before opening protected activity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Lock-screen widgets and Always On Display
Samsung says widgets added to the lock screen can appear on the Always On Display when AOD is enabled. Its One UI 7 guide covers adding widgets to both the lock screen and AOD, while the US guide says specific AOD choices depend on the One UI version. Enable AOD in the phone’s display settings, then check the AOD preview; a lock-screen widget is not automatically guaranteed to appear there on every Galaxy model.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not transfer that behavior to Pixel or another manufacturer. Google’s documented lock-screen-wallpaper-on-AOD feature is limited to Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. That statement concerns wallpaper, not a universal promise that every lock-screen widget will be rendered on every Pixel AOD.
Best Value
Review privacy before displaying personal data
A lock screen is visible to anyone who can see the phone. On Pixel, notification settings let you choose whether notifications appear and whether sensitive content is shown. Google’s At a Glance controls also include sensitive-content settings. Because At a Glance can draw from apps, account activity, location, calendar, Wallet, and notifications depending on permissions, inspect each category rather than assuming the feature only shows weather.
- Lock the phone and read the complete preview from another person’s viewing angle.
- Hide sensitive notification content if message previews, one-time codes, appointments, or payment-related details could be exposed.
- Remove a widget that reveals information you would not want visible in a workplace, classroom, vehicle, or public place.
- Check whether a tap opens a protected app and requires authentication.
Android Developers states: “If a widget launches an activity from the lock screen, users must authenticate to launch the activity, or the activity should declare android:showWhenLocked="true" in its manifest entry.” This is a developer/platform rule, not a promise that a widget can bypass the lock screen. Apps may also opt out, and exact widget dimensions vary by device.
Troubleshoot missing or unusable widgets
The Add Widgets or Widgets button is absent
- Check the phone model and Android or One UI version.
- Install the latest update offered by the phone maker, then reopen the lock-screen editor.
- On a Pixel, look specifically for Settings > Display & touch > Lock screen > Widgets on lock screen; the documented control is tied to Android 16 QPR2 reporting.
- On a Galaxy, try both the long-press editor and Settings > Wallpaper and style > current lock screen > Add widgets.
- Consider region and rollout differences. Samsung’s support pages themselves use different labels and cover different One UI ranges.
The app you want is not listed
Only supported apps expose lock-screen widgets. Samsung says its supported-app list can change, and Android Developers notes that apps can opt out of the lock-screen experience. Updating the app may help if its developer has added support, but installing an unrelated widget app cannot guarantee compatibility with the manufacturer’s editor.
The widget appears on the lock screen but not AOD
Confirm that AOD is enabled and that your model’s One UI version supports that widget in its AOD layout. Samsung documents the behavior for supported Galaxy configurations; other manufacturers may omit it. Pixel’s AOD documentation should be read separately from its lock-screen widget behavior.
A widget is too large, blank, or difficult to use
Reopen edit mode and look for resize or style controls. Pixel’s reported editor offers resizing; Samsung exposes only the options supplied by each widget. If no control exists, choose a different style or widget rather than assuming the phone is malfunctioning. A widget that relies on account, location, calendar, or notification permissions may also show less information until those permissions are granted.
A practical device-by-device checklist
- Write down the manufacturer, exact model, Android version, and One UI version if applicable.
- Open the lock-screen editor and look for a widget control.
- If you use a Galaxy, try the One UI 7 long-press route and the Wallpaper and style route.
- If you use a Pixel, check for the Android 16 QPR2-style Widgets on lock screen switch before trying the swipe-left page.
- Separate widget changes from clock, shortcut, notification, and At a Glance settings.
- Configure only the widgets and styles your editor actually offers.
- Preview the locked phone, then review notification and sensitive-content controls.
- Check AOD independently; its support is manufacturer- and model-specific.
What the platform guarantees—and what it does not
Android’s platform work makes lock-screen widgets possible, and the Developers FAQ says all widgets are compatible with the lock-screen widget experience while noting that apps can opt out and dimensions vary by device. That does not mean every Android phone exposes the same editor, every installed app supplies a panel, or every widget can launch its full app while the device is locked.
The reliable approach is therefore conditional: identify the phone and software build, use the manufacturer’s current editor, and treat missing controls as a compatibility or rollout issue until the version and region have been checked. Samsung currently provides the clearest documented phone flow through One UI 7 and its Brief widgets editor. Pixel support is newer and version-dependent, with Android 16 QPR2 reported as the point at which the lock-screen widget page became available.
