Defeating that enemy with FIGHT or damaging magic makes it Lost, blocking recruitment, but violent victories increase your party’s HP, Attack, and Magic for the rest of the current chapter (within the game’s limit). These choices can alter town activities and some scenes, but ordinary encounters do not create a separate ending; the official game site describes DELTARUNE as having one ending.
The two battle outcomes at a glance
For ordinary encounters, your choice affects three different time scales: what happens in the current battle, what your party can do for the rest of the chapter, and which recruitment-dependent content is available later. The same choice is not automatically available for every boss or special encounter.

| Approach | How it works | Immediate result | Chapter and story effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPARE | Use ACT commands to raise an enemy’s MERCY to 100%, then choose SPARE. | Enemy leaves without damage; no violent victory. | Recruitable enemies count toward Castle Town recruitment. Some later scenes or activities may depend on that record. |
| PACIFY | Make the enemy TIRED, then have Ralsei cast PACIFY for at least 16% TP. | Enemy is defeated nonviolently. | It functions like a nonviolent win for recruitment when the enemy is recruitable. |
| FIGHT or damaging magic | Reduce the enemy’s HP to zero through damage. | Violent victory. | From Chapter 2 onward, a recruitable enemy becomes Lost and cannot be recruited. Party HP, Attack, and Magic rise for the remainder of the chapter, up to an unspecified limit. |
How to spare an enemy
Raise MERCY with ACT commands
Choose the target, open ACT, and select commands that increase that enemy’s MERCY. The exact command differs by species and encounter; some actions require a particular party member, timing, or response. Watch the target’s name in the battle menu rather than assuming that one successful ACT always finishes the process.
Recommended Free Tools
Recognize when SPARE is ready
At 100% MERCY, the target’s name turns yellow and gains a star marker. Select that enemy and choose SPARE. SPARE is individual: one ready target can be spared while another enemy in the same battle still needs ACT commands.

Do not accidentally finish the fight with damage
FIGHT and damaging spells can remove an enemy before its MERCY is full. If preserving recruitment matters, keep the target alive, use the required ACT sequence, and check for the yellow name before selecting an attack. Defending or using non-damaging commands can buy turns while you build MERCY.
How PACIFY differs from SPARE
Make the target TIRED
Certain ACT results, and in some encounters losing some HP, make an enemy TIRED. A tired target is not the same as a target with 100% MERCY; it enables a different nonviolent finish.
Use Ralsei’s spell when the menu shows it
When PACIFY is available, the target is marked in blue with a “Zz” indicator. Ralsei must have at least 16% TP to cast the spell. Select PACIFY instead of continuing to attack. If TP is below that threshold, spend a turn defending or otherwise generating TP, provided the encounter allows it.
PACIFY and SPARE are both nonviolent outcomes for recruitment purposes. The practical difference is the setup: SPARE requires 100% MERCY, while PACIFY requires the TIRED status and enough TP.

What a violent victory changes
Temporary combat statistics
Beginning with Chapter 2, violent victories can raise the party’s HP, Attack, and Magic. The improvement lasts only for the rest of that chapter and has a game-defined upper limit that the official reminder does not quantify. It is therefore a short-term power trade rather than a permanent character-building system.
Recruitment is lost for that enemy
If an enemy type is recruitable, defeating it violently marks that enemy as Lost. A Lost enemy does not count toward the required recruitment total and cannot later be recruited through ordinary nonviolent encounters. Choosing violence can make the current chapter’s fights easier while closing the corresponding Castle Town opportunity.
Non-recruitable enemies are a different case
Not every opponent feeds into the recruitment system. A violent win against an enemy with no recruitment flag does not create a recruit to lose, although it may still contribute to the chapter’s combat-stat benefit when the game’s rules allow it. Check the encounter’s behavior rather than applying the recruitable-enemy rule universally.

How progress is counted
Recruitment begins in Chapter 2. Spare or pacify enough members of the same recruitable enemy type to meet that type’s required count. The game provides recruitment progress and completion checks, so you can verify whether a type has been completed instead of guessing from a single encounter.

What recruits do in town
Recruited enemies move to Castle Town. A larger population makes the town feel more active and can unlock activities or conversations that are unavailable with fewer recruits. The effect is cumulative across the enemies you preserve; it is not a single binary “mercy route” switch.
Why a single Lost enemy can matter
Some later scenes check whether particular enemies were recruited or Lost. You do not need to spare every opponent to see every piece of content, but a violent win against a flagged enemy can remove the opportunity tied to that enemy type. The official reminder characterizes many of these consequences as minor scene effects rather than a wholly different storyline.
Chapter 1 is an exception
The Chapter 2 recruitment system does not operate during Chapter 1. Do not expect Chapter 1 encounters to populate Castle Town immediately or treat them as if they used the later recruitment counter.

What carries into later chapters
Completion data preserves choices
The official gameplay reminder says that a subsequent chapter can carry over collected items, money, equipment, and choices from completed chapters. Those records are how recruitment and other flags can influence later content. Starting a chapter without completion data uses the stated default state instead, so two players can see different setup conditions even before making a new battle choice.
One ending does not mean no consequences
The official game site describes DELTARUNE as having one ending. That statement should not be read as “every fight is cosmetic.” Recruitment records can change who appears in Castle Town, which activities are available, and selected scenes. The evidence supports contextual variation within a single overall ending, not a promise of separate ordinary “good” and “bad” endings.

Chapter 2: Thrash Machine and Castle Town content
The wiki documents recruited enemies contributing HP to the Thrash Machine before the GIGA Queen battle: a 200-HP base, plus 5 HP per recruit, up to 250 HP. Treat those exact values as secondary-source details and verify them in the current game version. The same recruitment records affect Castle Town scenes and activities.
Best Value
Chapter 3: Zapper
The reference says that losing Zapper removes a spotlight route and can block the chapter’s Egg unless TripTicket was obtained earlier. This is a specific example of a Lost record closing a route, not evidence that every violent victory removes a major chapter objective.
Chapter 4: Pippins, Shadowguys, and Jackenstein
The reference reports that recruiting Pippins and Shadowguys, while losing no Chapter 3 recruits, lets them repair Tenna. It also describes a Jackenstein rescue scene conditional on no Dark Sanctuary enemies being Lost. These conditions show why a player pursuing optional scenes may want to preserve recruitment across chapters.
Bosses do not always follow the ordinary rule
The official reminder explicitly warns that some bosses cannot be defeated violently and some cannot be defeated nonviolently. A boss may require a particular ACT chain, a scripted action, or damage at a designated point. If SPARE or PACIFY is unavailable, follow the encounter’s stated requirements instead of repeatedly trying the normal enemy procedure. Likewise, the presence of a FIGHT command does not guarantee that damage is the intended solution.
Choosing a route for your goal
| Your priority | Best general approach | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| More Castle Town residents, activities, and recruitment-dependent scenes | Use ACTs to SPARE or make enemies TIRED and PACIFY them. | You do not receive the violent victory’s temporary HP, Attack, and Magic increase for that enemy. |
| Maximum strength during the current chapter | Use FIGHT or damaging magic when the encounter permits it. | Recruitable enemies become Lost, and related town or scene content may be unavailable. |
| Seeing as much optional content as possible | Preserve recruitable enemies and carry completion data forward. | Some fights take longer because you must identify and perform the correct ACT sequence. |
| Experimenting without committing a long-term file | Finish a chapter, then use a separate save or a chapter start without completion data. | A default-state chapter will not include your earlier items, equipment, money, or choices. |
There is no universal good-route or bad-route answer for ordinary battles. Decide whether the immediate stat boost or the recruitment record is more valuable to the way you want to play, then apply the appropriate method consistently to enemies whose status matters.
Common mistakes and fixes
- SPARE is not selectable: Continue the relevant ACT sequence until the target reaches 100% MERCY and its name turns yellow with a star.
- PACIFY is missing: The target may not be TIRED, or Ralsei may have less than the required 16% TP. Use the encounter’s available non-damaging actions and check the blue “Zz” marker.
- You attacked before checking: Damage can end the fight and mark a recruitable enemy Lost. Once Lost, that enemy cannot be recovered through normal recruitment.
- You expected Chapter 1 recruits: Recruitment begins in Chapter 2; Chapter 1 does not use the later system during its own encounters.
- A boss refuses both options: Consult the battle’s dialogue and ACT requirements. Some bosses are designed to reject one defeat method entirely.
- Later content is missing: Confirm that you loaded a chapter-completion file containing the earlier choices. A chapter started without completion data uses the game’s default state.
How to check your decision before ending a battle
- Identify whether the enemy is one you want to recruit; recruitment matters from Chapter 2 onward.
- If yes, avoid damage until you have tested the relevant ACT commands.
- Look for the yellow name and star before choosing SPARE, or the blue target and “Zz” marker before choosing PACIFY.
- After the battle, use the game’s recruitment progress or completion check to confirm that the result counted.
- When finishing a chapter, preserve the completion data if you want the choice available to later chapters.
Bottom line for a first playthrough
Nonviolent victories are the safer choice if your priority is a populated Castle Town and the widest set of optional recruitment-based scenes. Violent victories are useful when you value stronger party statistics during the current chapter and accept that recruitable enemies will be Lost. The consequences are meaningful but localized: they shape power, town population, and selected scenes inside a game that still presents one overall ending. Because DELTARUNE is episodic and additional chapters are planned as free updates, check the current official availability and encounter behavior when a new chapter releases.
