How to Add an HTML5 Video Player to a Website

Use the native HTML video element to add browser controls, compatible media sources, a poster image, and accessible captions to a website.

Add a video with the native HTML <video> element. Include the controls attribute for familiar browser playback controls, then supply a compatible media file, an optional poster image, and captions where needed.

Add a video with native browser controls

For a straightforward embed, put a <video> element in the page and add controls. The browser supplies a play/pause button, seeking, volume, and other controls supported by that browser. The following example offers WebM and MP4 sources, a poster, a fallback download link, and an English captions track:

<video controls width="640" poster="/media/preview.jpg">
  <source src="/media/demo.webm" type="video/webm">
  <source src="/media/demo.mp4" type="video/mp4">
  <track kind="captions" src="/media/demo.en.vtt" srclang="en" label="English">
  <p>Your browser does not support HTML video. <a href="/media/demo.mp4">Download the video</a>.</p>
</video>

Replace the example paths with files your site actually serves. A <source> list gives the browser alternatives; it does not guarantee that the browser supports every file’s codec. Check the browsers and devices your audience uses and encode compatible media for them. The MDN reference for the video element documents the element’s attributes, sources, styling, and timed-text tracks.

Size and adapt the player to your layout

You can set dimensions with the width and height attributes or CSS. For a fluid layout, a common starting point is:

#1 Best Overall
BrightSign LS425 Digital Signage Appliance
  • Plays flawless HD and 4K video, HTML5, graphics and digital audio
  • Displays simple HTML5 widgets and animations
  • Packed with unique signage features to enable captivating experiences
  • Flexible for connected or o ine environments
  • Supports single touchscreen experiences
video {
  width: 100%;
  height: auto;
}

Use this only if it fits your design and test the result in the page layout. A poster attribute provides an image to display before playback. CSS properties such as object-fit and object-position can adjust how video content appears within its box.

Choose loading and playback behavior deliberately

The preload attribute influences how eagerly the browser fetches media; it is a hint, not a guarantee that the browser will download a particular amount. Choose it according to the page’s needs and test actual behavior. Do not add autoplay="false" to disable autoplay: the presence of the autoplay attribute enables autoplay behavior. Avoid autoplay unless there is a clear reason and the experience remains usable for visitors.

  • BrightWall: Synchronized playback across multiple displays

Without controls, the browser does not show its default control interface. You can build a custom interface using JavaScript and the HTMLMediaElement API, but then you are responsible for implementing and maintaining controls and their accessibility behavior. For most basic embeds, native controls are the simpler baseline. See the MDN video element documentation and the WHATWG HTML Standard’s media elements section for the platform details.

Add captions with a WebVTT track

Create a WebVTT (.vtt) file and reference it with a <track> inside the video element. Set kind, src, srclang, and label so the track’s purpose and language are clear. For each additional language, provide a separate track with the appropriate language code and label. For example:

<video controls>

  <track kind="captions" src="/media/demo.en.vtt" srclang="en" label="English">
  <track kind="captions" src="/media/demo.fr.vtt" srclang="fr" label="Français">
</video>

Captions should include speech and meaningful non-speech audio, such as a relevant sound effect or music cue. Subtitles often translate dialogue and may omit those sounds, so choose the track type and content for the audience and accessibility need. Review automatically generated captions for accuracy, provide a transcript, and consider an audio description or another suitable alternative when important visual information is not conveyed in the soundtrack. Test captions against the actual video: their styling and positioning support varies by browser and media player, and captions should not cover essential content.

W3C WAI describes captions as synchronized text for speech and relevant non-speech audio displayed in a media player in its Captions/Subtitles guidance, updated 17 September 2024. Its H95 track-element technique provides an implementation example; WAI notes that techniques are examples of ways to meet WCAG, not the only routes to conformance. MDN also provides a practical guide to adding captions and subtitles.

Check a video that will not play

When playback fails, check the delivery chain in order rather than assuming the HTML is the problem:

  • Confirm the URL. Open the media URL directly and verify that the file exists at the path used by src.
  • Check the server response and MIME type. Confirm that the server returns the media successfully and identifies its type correctly.
  • Verify format and codec support. A valid MP4 or WebM filename alone does not establish that its encoding is supported by the visitor’s browser or device. Check the formats your target browsers support and provide suitable alternatives.
  • Inspect browser diagnostics. Look at the browser console and network panel for failed requests, decoding issues, or other errors.
  • Test captions separately. Confirm the VTT URL loads and that the track’s language and label are correct; preview it during playback to check timing and placement.

MDN’s HTML video and audio guide is a beginner-friendly companion for setting up media in a page.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It captures a URL as an image or PDF; it is not a video player or a way to stream video. If you need a screenshot of a page containing your player, one GET request can capture it:
