To add a site-wide affiliate notice in Astra, open Appearance > Customize > Footer, add an HTML or Widget element to a footer row, enter clear disclosure text, preview it, and click Publish. For a recommendation inside a post, also place a disclosure near that recommendation or affiliate link; a footer notice alone may be too far away to make the relationship clear in context.
Add a site-wide disclosure in Astra’s Footer Builder
Astra’s Footer Builder is documented for Astra 3.0.0 and later. It lets you place a notice in a footer row without editing theme code. Astra’s Footer Builder documentation describes the available elements and live preview.

- In your WordPress dashboard, go to Appearance > Customize > Footer.
- Choose a footer row, such as the primary or below-footer row, and select its plus icon.
- Add an HTML or Widget element.
- Enter your disclosure wording, then check the preview at desktop and mobile sizes to confirm it is readable and visible.
- Click Publish to save the changes.
A footer widget is an alternative if you manage the notice as a widget: Astra documents widget management through the Customizer or Appearance > Widgets. Astra’s widget documentation covers those routes.
Put disclosures near individual recommendations
A footer notice gives readers site-wide context, but it does not automatically add a disclosure to article content. When a post contains an affiliate recommendation, add a concise disclosure close to that recommendation or link using the post editor or your usual publishing workflow.

The placement principle comes from FTC guidance: a material connection that could affect how consumers assess an endorsement should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. Applying that guidance to a page means readers should not have to search for a distant notice to understand a recommendation. The FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers explains disclosure clarity and placement, including why a disclosure hidden after a “more” fold or among hashtags may be missed. Astra’s documentation explains its tools; it does not certify that a particular placement or wording meets legal requirements.
Choose a disclosure wording that describes your relationship
A plain-language starting point is: “This post contains affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.” Adapt it to the actual relationship and program terms; do not say that a purchase costs the reader nothing extra unless that is true.

This is an example, not wording prescribed or approved by the FTC. FTC staff cautioned in 2017: “There’s no one-size-fits-all way to make that disclosure, but an unfamiliar abbreviation or cryptic word subject to multiple interpretations probably won’t do the trick.” FTC staff guidance on clear and conspicuous disclosures discusses that point.

Use an Astra hook for a custom location
If the Customizer does not offer the placement you need, Astra documents content insertion with WordPress hooks, including astra_header_before and astra_header_after. Astra’s hook documentation shows the mechanism and points to a child theme for custom PHP. It does not provide a specific affiliate-disclosure implementation.
- Use a child theme or another appropriate code-management workflow rather than editing the parent theme directly; parent-theme updates can overwrite direct edits.
- Test the change on a staging copy before applying it to the live site.
- Choose a hook that places the notice where readers need it. A site-wide hook placement still may not put the disclosure beside each post’s recommendation.
Which Astra placement should you use?
| Placement | Coverage | Proximity to recommendation | Maintenance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footer Builder notice | Site-wide footer | May be distant from a particular link | Visual editing through the Customizer; publish changes |
| Disclosure in post content | Only the posts where you add it | Can sit beside the relevant recommendation | Edit through the post editor or publishing workflow |
| Theme hook | Depends on the hook and code | Depends on where the hook renders the notice | Requires code; use a child theme and test changes |
For many sites, a footer notice and a contextual disclosure in posts serve different purposes: the footer gives broad site-wide context, while the post disclosure helps readers understand a specific recommendation. The right wording and placement depend on the publisher’s actual relationship and circumstances; these instructions are not a legal determination for a particular site or jurisdiction.
