RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a messaging standard that enables internet-based chat features such as typing indicators, read receipts, and high-resolution photo sharing. It works only when the messaging app, service providers, and participants support and enable it. If an RCS message cannot be delivered—or a participant is not using RCS—the conversation may use SMS or MMS instead. That changes how the message is delivered, which features are available, and whether end-to-end encryption applies.
What RCS messaging is
RCS is an industry-standard messaging protocol, not a separate messaging app. Apps and service providers can offer access to it; Google’s service, for example, can interoperate with users on other RCS providers. Support and available features vary by app, carrier, and region. Google explains RCS chats and their availability.

Unlike SMS and MMS, RCS uses an internet connection—mobile data or Wi-Fi—to send messages. It can support file and high-resolution photo sharing, typing indicators, and read receipts. The exact feature set depends on the service and the people in the conversation.
How an RCS conversation works
RCS availability depends on both ends of the conversation. In Google Messages, everyone must have RCS chats turned on, and the relevant app and provider must support the service. Google says Messages checks contacts for RCS availability when RCS is enabled and when a message is sent. Having a smartphone alone does not guarantee an RCS conversation; availability can also vary by carrier and region. Google’s RCS overview describes these requirements.

With Google-provided RCS, messages travel over the internet through Google’s RCS infrastructure and can be routed to someone using another RCS provider. SMS and MMS, by contrast, are delivered through the mobile carrier. In Google Messages, check the compose-bar label: “RCS message” indicates RCS, while “Text message” indicates SMS or MMS. Other apps may use different labels or controls.
What changes when RCS falls back to SMS or MMS
Fallback means the message is sent using a different transport because RCS is unavailable or delivery has failed. It is not simply an RCS message with a different label: the message now travels as carrier SMS or MMS, and RCS-dependent features may no longer be available.

Delivery and switching
In Google Messages, an unsent RCS message is retried continually. For an undelivered message, the user can choose “Switch to text (SMS/MMS).” Google notes that the resulting SMS/MMS message will not be end-to-end encrypted. Google’s delivery-control instructions explain this option. Other apps and providers may handle retries, automatic fallback, and switching differently.

The GSMA’s RCS Universal Profile Service Definition Document, version 3.1 (August 2025) specifies network and client fallback mechanisms and describes SMS latching: after a fallback, subsequent messages remain on SMS until RCS availability is confirmed. This describes profile behavior, not a guarantee that every app presents or implements fallback the same way.

Features and encryption
After a switch, do not assume RCS features will continue. Google says typing indicators and read receipts do not work with recipients who do not have RCS chats. SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted, so a message sent through either is not protected by RCS end-to-end encryption.
Google Messages supports end-to-end encryption (E2EE) in eligible RCS chats. In Google’s documented encrypted-chat scenario, E2EE is unavailable if either participant loses or disables RCS, changes to a new phone or operating system, or loses data or Wi-Fi and the conversation downgrades to SMS. If both participants regain RCS and remain eligible Google Messages users, the conversation can return to E2EE RCS. Other providers may have different conditions. Google explains how RCS chats keep conversations secure.

RCS and SMS/MMS compared
| Aspect | RCS | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Uses mobile data or Wi-Fi and depends on compatible, enabled app and provider service for participants. | Delivered through the mobile carrier; may be used when RCS is unavailable or a message falls back. |
| Chat features | Can support file and high-resolution photo sharing, typing indicators, and read receipts; actual support varies. | Do not assume RCS-only features such as typing indicators or read receipts will work. |
| End-to-end encryption | Available in eligible Google Messages RCS chats. Apple says RCS encryption depends on whether all participants’ carriers support it. | Not end-to-end encrypted. |
| Fallback behavior | Google Messages retries undelivered messages and lets users switch an unsent message to SMS/MMS. GSMA’s profile describes fallback and SMS latching; app behavior varies. | After profile-defined SMS latching, subsequent messages remain on SMS until RCS availability is confirmed. Not every app necessarily follows the same user flow. |
Apple’s description of its platform and carrier-dependent RCS encryption is available in Apple’s RCS support information. Encryption and feature availability should not be assumed to be identical across platforms or providers.
