On a Hytale dedicated server, add an administrator by granting operator status. In the server console or as an existing operator in game, run /op add <playername>. If the person has never joined, substitute their UUID. Some hosts require you to enable operators first; panel-hosted servers may offer an Ops page instead. For a lasting, file-based grant, edit permissions.json while the server is stopped.

What “admin” means in Hytale
Hytale server guides generally use operator (OP) for the elevated role that most communities call admin. An operator can run powerful server commands and may be able to change settings or affect every player. Give the role only to people you trust, and use the least access needed for routine moderation.

The exact interface depends on where the server runs. A self-managed server normally uses its console or an in-game command. A managed host may expose a control-panel form, an operator toggle, or a file editor. The command itself is short, but three choices determine the correct procedure:
- Access: Do you control the server console, or only a hosting panel?
- Identity: Has the player joined before, or do you have to use a UUID?
- Duration: Do you need an immediate live grant, or an entry that is maintained in
permissions.json?
The fastest method: use the console or an operator account
Run the standard command
- Open the server console, or join the server with an account that already has operator privileges.
- Enter
/op add <playername>, replacing the placeholder with the player’s exact in-game name. - Submit the command and wait for the server response. Host documentation from Apex describes a confirmation that the user is now an operator; Nodecraft describes an in-game message sent to the target.
- Ask the player to reconnect or try an operator-only command so you can verify that the grant reached the intended account. Do not assume a restart is required: published host instructions do not establish one universal restart rule, so follow the status and instructions shown by your host.
For a console-only interface, Apex writes the same operation as op add [username] without the leading slash. That is a console-syntax difference, not a different permission level. If the console rejects the slash form, remove the slash and keep the rest of the command unchanged.

Use the exact player name
Names must identify the intended Hytale account. Copy the spelling, capitalization and punctuation shown by the server rather than relying on a nickname used in chat or on a community site. A typo can produce an error, target nobody, or create an operator entry for the wrong identity if your host accepts it.
Adding someone who has never joined
A username may not be enough for an account that has never connected. Apex’s host instructions specifically recommend using the player’s UUID in that case. Obtain the UUID from the account or server-management information available to you, then use the same operator command with the UUID in place of the name:

Use the field your panel provides rather than entering a UUID into a name-only form. If the command reports that the identity cannot be found, verify the UUID character-for-character and check whether your host requires the console form without the slash.
Before you run the command: enable operators when required
Several managed hosts keep operator grants disabled until an account-level setting is switched on. If /op add is refused, missing from the command help, or appears to do nothing, inspect the host settings before changing files.

GGServers
- Stop the server.
- Open Server Settings.
- Open General Settings.
- Turn on Allow operators.
- Start the server and then issue the operator command from the console or an authorized account.
The setting name and menu sequence are documented for GGServers; other hosts may place the equivalent switch elsewhere.
Cybrancee
Cybrancee’s instructions also call for enabling operators before granting OP status. Look for an operator or permissions control in the server configuration, enable it, and then run the command. If the control is absent, ask the host whether operators are disabled for your server type rather than editing an unknown configuration file.

- Open the server dashboard.
- Choose Players.
- Open Ops.
- Enter the player’s name and confirm the addition.
The panel is useful when you do not have console access, but it is still granting the same elevated operator role. Double-check the account name before confirming. If the player has never joined and the form accepts UUIDs, use the UUID workflow; if it accepts names only, consult the host’s instructions for pre-join accounts instead of guessing.
When a panel and console disagree
Use one control path at a time. A panel can cache a player list while the server console reflects the live state, or a host may apply panel changes only after its own synchronization step. Check the server’s response, the panel’s operator list and the player’s in-game notification. If those three views disagree, capture the exact error and contact the host before making duplicate entries.
Make the grant persistent with permissions.json
For a permanent, file-managed assignment, Apex’s instructions place the permissions file under Config Files and advise stopping the server before editing. The safe sequence is:
- Tell players the server will be taken offline and stop it from the host panel or your service manager.
- Create a backup or download a copy of the current
permissions.json. - Open the host’s Config Files area and select
permissions.json. - Follow the schema already present in the file and add the intended player’s identity to the operator or equivalent permission entry. Use the UUID when the player has never joined or when the schema identifies accounts by UUID.
- Preserve valid JSON syntax: matching braces and brackets, quoted keys and values where the existing schema uses them, and commas between entries but not after the final entry.
- Save the file, start the server, and verify the player’s status with an operator-only action.
Do not paste a guessed JSON template into a live file. Hytale server builds and host panels can expose different schemas, and a malformed permissions file can affect access for everyone. If the editor reports a syntax error, restore the backup and ask the host for the supported file format.

A command grant and a file entry serve different operational needs. The command is the quickest way to apply a live change; the permissions file is the deliberate choice when you want the assignment represented in server configuration. Keep a record of who received access, why, and when it should be reviewed.

How to verify that the right person became an operator
- Read the server response: Apex documents a message saying the user is now an operator.
- Check the target’s game client: Nodecraft reports an in-game notification for the player.
- Test a low-risk administrative action: Have the recipient use a harmless command that ordinary players cannot run. Avoid testing with destructive commands such as deleting entities, changing world state or modifying other users.
- Review the panel or file: Confirm that the expected name or UUID appears once, not multiple times with different spellings.
A missing confirmation does not prove the grant failed. First check whether operators are enabled, whether you used the correct console syntax, and whether the account was identified by the correct UUID.

“Unknown command” or the command is rejected
- Try the console form
op add <playername>without the slash if you are in a host console. - Check the host’s operator toggle, especially the Allow operators setting documented by GGServers.
- Confirm that you are running the command from an authorized account when using in-game chat.
The player cannot be found
- Correct spelling and punctuation in the name.
- For an account that has never joined, replace the name with the UUID.
- Use a panel’s UUID field when one is provided; do not assume a name-only form can resolve an offline account.
The player still has ordinary permissions
- Look for the success response or target notification.
- Check the panel’s Ops list or the saved permissions file.
- Ask the player to reconnect if the host’s interface indicates that permissions are loaded at login. No universal restart requirement is established by the available host instructions, so do not restart blindly; follow the host’s documented behavior.
The server will not start after editing the file
- Stop further changes and restore the backup of
permissions.json. - Check for a missing comma, unmatched brace, or accidental removal of an existing section.
- Start the server with the restored file, then ask the host for the exact schema before attempting another edit.
Removing or reviewing admin access
Review operator access whenever staff roles change. Use the corresponding removal control in your panel or permissions configuration, and keep the identity format consistent with the original entry. If you granted access by command and your host provides an operator-list management command, use that host-documented removal syntax rather than inventing a /perm command. The syntax for broader permission and group commands is not consistently established across the available Hytale host guides.
For a file-managed server, stop the server before removing the entry, make a backup, save the valid JSON, and verify that the former administrator can no longer perform an operator-only action. Record the date and reason for the change so another owner can audit it later.
Security practices for Hytale operators
- Grant OP only to trusted people; operator status exposes sensitive commands.
- Prefer named, accountable staff accounts over a shared login.
- Use UUIDs for pre-join grants and retain the UUID in your staff record so a name change does not create ambiguity.
- Back up
permissions.jsonbefore every manual edit. - Do not post the permissions file, console credentials or panel API tokens in public chat or screenshots.
- Review the operator list regularly and remove access that is no longer needed.
Apex warns that mistakes in the permissions file can affect everyone’s access. Treat a file edit as a server-wide configuration change, not as a harmless text update.
Dedicated server versus singleplayer
The procedures above address a dedicated server. Singleplayer operator behavior is not settled by the available host documentation: Pine Hosting lists /op self, while another guide says a --allow-op launch flag is required. Because those instructions conflict, do not treat either method as a universal singleplayer solution. Check the instructions for the exact Hytale build and launcher you are using.
Where to check official documentation
Hytale publishes its server documentation through the Hytale Support site. The existence of the server manual is confirmed, but the operator section was not available for verification in the material used here. Use the manual and your host’s current interface for version-specific details, especially after a server update.
