Choose between Most visited sites and My shortcuts
Chrome offers two ways to fill the shortcut row under the search box: it can surface sites based on your visits, or show a list you choose. Google describes the New Tab page as showing “websites you visit often or shortcuts to websites you chose” in its Chrome Help for computers.

Show shortcuts is a separate display setting: turn it on if the shortcut row is hidden.
Set up the shortcut row on a computer
- Open Chrome and open a New Tab.
- Click Customize Chrome at the bottom right.
- Under Shortcuts, select Most visited sites for automatic suggestions or My shortcuts for a list you manage.
- If the tiles are not visible, turn on Show shortcuts.
To add a chosen site, use My shortcuts. If Chrome displays Add shortcut, select it, enter the shortcut name and the website URL, then choose Done. Google’s Workspace Learning Center instructions describe this workflow. If the button is not shown, first select My shortcuts in Customize Chrome.

Edit or remove a shortcut
- On the New Tab page, point to the shortcut’s icon.
- Open More.
- Choose Edit shortcut to change its name or URL, or Remove to take it off the page.
If Customize Chrome or the shortcuts are missing
- Check that you are on Chrome’s standard New Tab page. A different page may be opening instead.
- Check the account and search settings. Google lists being signed in to a Google Account and using Google as the default search engine among the requirements for computer New Tab customization. In some countries, managing linked Google services may also be needed for Chrome history personalization. See Google’s computer guidance for the applicable conditions.
- Look for an extension controlling the New Tab page. Chrome Help says an extension that controls the page can be identified in its footer. On a managed browser, an administrator can control some settings and whether that footer is visible; see Chrome’s guidance on extensions and New Tab pages.
These steps change tiles on Chrome’s New Tab page; they do not create a desktop shortcut.

On Android, open a New Tab and use the page menu to manage shortcuts. Google’s Android instructions cover adding a shortcut, pinning a suggested one, editing, rearranging pinned shortcuts, removing, and unpinning.

Google says custom shortcuts on Android do not sync to other devices. If Chrome says you cannot add more, you have reached the available limit. A URL must be correct and not already present; a removed site can be added manually.
