To add a waveform to an always-on podcast stream in OBS, install an audio-visualizer plugin, add its source to the scene that runs continuously, and select the same OBS audio source that carries the podcast to viewers. Waveform is the straightforward choice for a conventional waveform or spectrum; Audio Waves Visualizer suits shader-driven looks and custom effects, but requires a newer OBS version. Test the complete scene and recovery process on the system you will leave running: plugin listings describe their operation, not guaranteed 24/7 reliability.
Choose a visualizer that fits your OBS setup
| Plugin | Best fit | Compatibility and caveats |
|---|---|---|
| Waveform | Conventional waveform, line, bar, or circular spectrum displays and audio metrics. | The OBS Project Forums listing identifies version 1.9.1, minimum OBS Studio 27.0.0, and Windows, macOS, and Linux support; it was updated July 14, 2026. These are listing details checked October 3, 2026, and may change. On Linux, pair a Flatpak OBS installation with the Flatpak version of Waveform, as the project repository instructs. | Audio Waves Visualizer | Shader-driven visuals, bundled templates, or custom effect files. | The OBS listing for version 3.0.5 specifies OBS Studio 32.0.2 or later and Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its author warns that some themes may cause lag on weaker GPUs; this is an author warning, not an independent benchmark. Audio Waves Visualizer listing · Project information |
| Spectralizer | People maintaining an older setup that already uses it. | Its OBS resource page marks it deprecated in favor of Waveform, which offers more options. It is not the recommended starting point for a new setup. Spectralizer listing |

Install the plugin and add it to the continuous scene
- Check your OBS version, operating system, and installation format. Compare them with the plugin’s current download page. Waveform’s listing gives OBS 27.0.0 as its minimum; Audio Waves Visualizer’s gives 32.0.2. If you use Flatpak OBS on Linux, install Waveform from Flatpak too rather than mixing package formats. Waveform compatibility · Waveform package guidance · Audio Waves compatibility
- Install the selected plugin using its official resource page or project instructions. Follow its operating-system-specific installation steps. If OBS does not list the new source after installation, close and reopen OBS before troubleshooting further.
- Open the scene used for the continuous podcast program. In the Sources dock, use the + button and select the visualizer source added by the plugin. Plugin controls and source-selection labels vary, so use the plugin’s own instructions for its fields. OBS scenes render their sources into the output. OBS plugin guide
- Select the program audio source. Choose the mixer source carrying the podcast feed sent to the stream—not a microphone, desktop sound, or temporary media source unless that is actually the program feed. Check that source’s OBS audio meter moves during playback. Waveform describes its display as applying to an audio source; Audio Waves Visualizer likewise analyzes a selected OBS source using RMS, peak, and FFT data. - Position and style the graphic on the real output canvas. Resize and place it so it stays legible without covering podcast branding or other important information. Audio Waves Visualizer includes templates and supports custom shader/effect-file loading. Try the intended look at the production resolution and on the machine that will run the stream; a theme that looks fine in a test scene may be too demanding for that computer.
- Verify the output, not just the preview. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream and confirm that viewers receive both the podcast audio and the moving graphic. Check the scene after source switches, scene changes, OBS restarts, system restarts, and stream reconnects. The plugin documentation does not certify automatic recovery after every interruption, so validate your own unattended workflow before relying on it.
Make the audio feed and visualizer match
The visualizer responds to the OBS source you select; it does not automatically know which sound is the podcast. If the graphic is still while viewers hear audio, first compare the selected source with the mixer meter. A source that is muted, inactive, or not the one routed to the program can produce a silent or misleading graphic. If the graphic reacts to the wrong sound, change the visualizer’s selection to the source that carries the program mix.
For a podcast assembled from several inputs, select the OBS mix that viewers actually hear when that mix is available as a source. Avoid selecting a temporary media item just because it happens to be playing during setup: its activity may not represent the continuous program. Confirm the choice by playing representative podcast audio and watching both the source meter and visualizer.

Keep an OBS-based stream unattended responsibly
Putting a visualizer in the program scene is necessary for it to appear in that scene, but it does not make OBS or the computer self-recovering. Before leaving a stream unattended, rehearse the transitions and interruptions that matter to your setup: change scenes, switch or restart the audio source, reconnect the stream, restart OBS, and restart the machine. Check the actual outgoing stream after each test. The reviewed plugin and OBS documentation do not establish a 24/7 uptime guarantee or universal recovery behavior.
- Confirm the intended continuous scene is active and contains the visualizer source.
- Verify the selected audio source remains available and its meter responds during the program.
- Test the actual output after reconnects and restarts, rather than relying only on the OBS preview.
- Keep a simpler visualizer style available if a complex theme makes OBS sluggish; the Audio Waves Visualizer author specifically warns that some themes may lag on weaker GPUs.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The visualizer source is missing from OBS. | Plugin and OBS versions, operating system, or package formats do not match; installation may not have completed. | Check the plugin’s current installation notes, confirm the supported OBS version and platform, restart OBS, and avoid mixing Flatpak Waveform with a non-Flatpak OBS installation (or vice versa). | The visualizer is not moving. | The selected audio source is silent, inactive, or not the source the visualizer is monitoring. | Play podcast audio, watch the selected source’s mixer meter, then confirm the visualizer is set to that source. Waveform listing · Audio Waves Visualizer listing |
| The graphic follows the wrong sound. | The visualizer is bound to desktop audio, a microphone, or another source instead of the program feed. | Change its source selection to the OBS audio source carrying the podcast mix and test with representative playback. | OBS becomes sluggish after enabling the effect. | A demanding template or shader may burden a weaker GPU. | Try a simpler Waveform presentation or a less demanding Audio Waves template. | The graphic disappears or stops after a scene change, reconnect, or restart. | The selected scene, audio source, plugin state, or recovery process may have changed. | Recheck the active scene and source selection, then repeat the interruption test on the system that will run the stream. Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously live YouTube channel rather than keeping OBS and a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded recordings or playlists. It does not go live from a camera. The three-step setup is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Thereafter the stream runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It keeps the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. A slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots, plus 24/7 looping, playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only; if you need the waveform visualizer specifically, this OBS plugin method is the one described above. Start your free StreamNeo day.
