On an eligible Android phone in a participating U.S. jurisdiction, open Google Wallet, tap Add to Wallet, choose ID card, then follow the prompts to photograph your ID and record a short verification video. The issuing agency must approve the submission. Keep your physical ID: Google says the digital version is not a replacement.
Check whether your phone and state are eligible
Google’s current U.S. instructions list these requirements and participating jurisdictions. Availability is controlled by the issuing government, so participation may change; check your state or territory agency’s current guidance if Wallet does not show the option. - An Android phone running Android 9 or later.
- A Google Wallet account linked with Gmail. Google says the identity credential option may not appear without this.
- Bluetooth and Nearby devices enabled.
- A screen lock set on the phone.
- A state ID or driver’s license issued by a participating jurisdiction: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, or Puerto Rico.
Add your state ID in Google Wallet
- Open the Google Wallet app on your Android phone.
- Tap Add to Wallet, then select ID card.
- Follow the on-screen directions to photograph the front and back of your state ID or driver’s license, then record a short video of yourself.
- Review the consent prompt and submit the application. With your consent, Google shares a photo from the video and ID information with the issuing government agency for verification.
Wait for the issuer’s decision. Sending the application does not mean the credential is approved; if the issuer asks for more information, follow the instructions in Wallet. If approved, the encrypted credential is saved on your phone. Google Wallet Help

Fix common enrollment problems
- The ID scan is unclear: Keep the card steady or place it on a flat surface. Use good lighting and a dark background, and make sure the barcode is clear.
- The option is missing or setup stops: Confirm that your jurisdiction participates and that the phone, Gmail-linked Wallet account, Bluetooth, Nearby devices, and screen-lock requirements are met.
- The app may be out of date: Update Google Wallet, then restart your phone and try again.
- The issuer rejects the application: Review the in-app instructions and contact the state ID issuer for more information.
Know the limits before relying on the digital ID
- Keep the physical card. Google explicitly warns that a digital ID in Wallet is not a replacement for your physical ID.
- The credential is device-bound. Google says it is encrypted and stored locally on the phone, not as an exportable copy in your Google Account. One state ID can be saved to only one device at a time.
- Plan ahead for a phone change, loss, or repair. Remove the credential from the old phone first. Google documents removal in Wallet or remotely through the Google Account’s ID management page. Google Wallet Help
- Reconnect periodically. The phone must connect to the internet to keep the credential up to date. After more than 30 consecutive days offline, the ID is unavailable until the phone reconnects. Google Wallet Help
- Check acceptance where you plan to use it. Acceptance is not universal. Google says a digital ID that is not REAL ID compliant will not be accepted at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel; verify current requirements with TSA or your issuing agency before traveling. Google Wallet Help
