Add a payment option only when it is likely to bring in enough additional completed orders to cover its full incremental cost. A method’s popularity or share of transactions is not proof that it improves profitability: some customers may simply switch from a payment method you already offered.
For each market and customer segment, estimate the new method’s costs, decide who bears each fee, and measure contribution margin per eligible checkout in a controlled rollout. The decision is about incremental profit—not adoption or gross conversion alone.

First, identify who needs the new option
Define the customers or transactions that lack a suitable payment choice today. That might be buyers in a particular country, on a particular device, in a transaction-value range, or in a specific buyer group. Estimate how many checkouts are genuinely eligible, rather than applying a marketplace-wide average to a method likely to be used by a small segment.
Local preferences matter, and payment methods can differ in convenience, fraud exposure, and transaction speed. Stripe’s guide to payment methods for e-commerce and marketplaces offers directional framing on those trade-offs; it is not evidence that a particular method will lift conversion for every marketplace.

Build the full incremental cost for each candidate
There is no universal price for a payment option. Pricing may combine a fixed processing charge with a method-specific fee, and it can vary by method and geography. Adyen describes this structure on its supported payment methods pricing page. Use your current contracted rates for a decision: a public pricing page is not a substitute for your agreement.
Include costs beyond the headline processing rate. Adyen identifies interchange, scheme fees, and provider commission or markup among transaction-fee types in its marketplace transaction-fees documentation. Some processing costs are aggregated and cannot be assigned to individual payments, so a per-transaction model may need an allocation rule rather than a directly observed figure.

- This is a stand alone credit/debit payment terminal, does not connect to a Clover Station or Mini. Plug in, not battery/mobile. Requires New Processing Account Through Powering POS. (US, PR, USVI). CANNOT be used with a different Processor. Rate match guarantee. Contact us for questions
- Compact Size: Space-efficient design saves counter space
- Faster Processing: Accommodates customers’ preferred methods (EMV, contactless, MSR, PIN debit, EBT, check payments)
- Surcharging: Apply surcharging to help reduce operational costs and increase profit margins
- Gift Card: Gift card increases repeat business and expands customer base
- Provider and method fees, including fixed charges and any network or interchange costs that apply.
- Charges that can arise on refused or cancelled payments, separately from costs incurred only on successful payments.
- Refunds, disputes, fraud losses, and any changes to payout or settlement costs.
- Integration, reconciliation, customer support, and ongoing operating effort.
Separate recurring per-payment charges from costs that arise less predictably. Be explicit about which values come from provider reporting, which are estimates, and which are allocated across transactions.

Model the economics for the platform, sellers, and customers—not just the payment provider’s transaction record. A fee charged to a seller may reduce seller proceeds or affect seller willingness to use the marketplace; a platform-borne fee reduces platform contribution. The accounting default is not necessarily the allocation you want commercially.

Adyen documents the use of split instructions to book specified fees to different marketplace balance accounts, while noting that some aggregated processing costs cannot be allocated to individual payments. Define how fees should be recorded and how seller settlement and reconciliation should work before rollout.
A surcharge or other fee pass-through requires particular care. Adyen describes surcharge as a way to pass payment acceptance fees to marketplace users and says agreements should address how the fee is charged. Before introducing one, check applicable market rules, card-scheme requirements, provider terms, seller contracts, and customer disclosures; permission and implementation requirements depend on the relevant market and agreements. See Adyen’s marketplace surcharge documentation.

Estimate whether the option adds contribution

Incremental contribution = incremental completed orders × contribution per order − incremental payment fees − incremental fraud, refund, dispute, support, and operating costs.

Estimate incremental orders using an experiment or a suitably cautious forecast. Do not treat every order placed with the new method as incremental: some buyers would have checked out using an existing option. Calculate the result for the eligible segment, using its expected order mix and costs.
When comparing plausible methods, weigh the following together rather than choosing on a single fee or adoption figure:
- Customer fit: market, customer segment, device, and checkout context.
- Fully loaded cost: provider and method fees, network costs, unsuccessful-payment charges, refunds, disputes, fraud, and operational burden.
- Incrementality: the share of usage that represents a newly completed order rather than substitution from an existing option.
- Settlement and allocation: who bears each fee and how platform and seller balances, settlement, and reconciliation are affected.
- Risk and service: authorization and completion, fraud, disputes, refunds, support needs, and settlement timing.
- Rollout feasibility: provider availability, integration effort, measurement quality, and the ability to target eligible customers.
Run a targeted rollout and measure profit
Where feasible, make the method available to a defined eligible segment and compare it with a holdout or a baseline agreed before launch. Measure outcomes per eligible checkout so that changes in who sees the option do not obscure its effect.

- Set the decision rule in advance. Choose the review period and minimum acceptable contribution before launch, along with the customer and seller outcomes that must remain acceptable.
- Track the checkout funnel. Record method selection, successful authorization and completion, checkout completion, and average order value.
- Track costs and service effects. Include fees, refunds, disputes, fraud losses, support contacts, and relevant settlement effects.
- Segment where sample sizes permit. Review results by country, device, seller category, and transaction value rather than assuming the average applies to every group.
- Compare incremental contribution. Use eligible checkouts as the comparison basis and account for orders that shifted from existing payment methods.
Stripe Connect lists conditional pricing and margin-reporting features on its online marketplace payments platform page. Those are provider capabilities, not evidence that an individual marketplace experiment will be profitable.
Keep, revise, or remove the option
- Keep it when measured incremental contribution clears the pre-set threshold and customer and seller outcomes remain acceptable.
- Revise it when the result misses the threshold but a specific adjustment—such as narrower eligibility, different routing, pricing, or fee allocation—could plausibly address the shortfall. Measure the revised setup against a clear baseline.
- Restrict or remove it when it adds cost without enough incremental value, or when its risk, service, or seller effects are unacceptable.
Reviewing against a rule set before launch makes it easier to distinguish a fixable implementation issue from a payment option that does not work economically for the segment.
