To password-protect a Hytale server, stop it, open the server’s config.json, set the Password value, save the file, and restart the server. Players are then asked for that password before they can finish connecting.

The file-based method is the documented approach. A self-hosted server usually requires editing the file directly, while a managed host may expose the same setting in a Config tab or file manager. The exact panel label varies by host.

What the password setting does
Hytale reads its server configuration when the process starts. The Password entry controls whether a joining player must supply a matching value. With a non-empty value, the connection flow requests the password; an incorrect password prevents the player from joining.
This is an access gate for the server, not a replacement for account security, permissions, backups, or moderation. Anyone who knows the password can attempt to join, so share it only with the people you intend to admit.

Before you edit the server
- Have access to the machine, control panel, or file manager that stores the server files.
- Know how to stop and start the server from that same environment.
- Make a backup copy of
config.jsonbefore changing it. If the file becomes invalid, restoring the copy is a quick recovery path. - Use a text editor that does not add rich-text formatting or change quotation marks.
- Plan a password you can distribute privately. The available documentation does not state a required length, character set, or maximum size, so do not assume a particular rule beyond what the server accepts.
Method 1: Edit config.json on a self-hosted server
Use this route when you run the server on your own computer or a virtual machine and have access to its filesystem.
1. Stop the server cleanly
Stop the running server before opening its configuration. Editing while the process is active can leave you unsure which version was written last, and the setting will not be applied until the next startup anyway.
2. Find the server root and config.json
Open the directory that contains the Hytale server files and locate config.json in that server’s root directory. Do not rely on a guide’s line number: formatting changes can move the setting. Search the file for the key named Password.
3. Set the Password value
Change the value after Password while keeping the key, colon, quotation marks, and surrounding JSON structure intact. The official example is:

"Password": "MONPASSWORD"Replace MONPASSWORD with your chosen value, leaving the password inside the double quotes. If the Password key already has a value, replace only that value. If the key is followed by another property, retain the comma that separates the properties.
4. Save valid JSON
Save the file as plain JSON. A missing comma, an extra comma, a smart quotation mark, or an unmatched brace can make the configuration invalid and may prevent the server from starting. Keep the rest of the file unchanged unless you have a separate reason to edit it.
5. Start the server again
Restart the server after saving. Hytale reads the configuration at startup, so simply saving the file does not change the running process. Wait for the server to finish starting before testing a connection.
6. Test from a player account
Connect as a player after the restart. A protected server should request the password before the connection completes. Enter the exact value you saved, including capitalization and any spaces you intentionally used. Test once with an incorrect value as well; it should be rejected rather than allowing entry.

Method 2: Use a hosting control panel
Managed hosts commonly provide either a direct configuration form or a file manager. The underlying setting is still the Password value in the server configuration, but the route to it differs.
Config tab or server-settings form
- Stop the server from the panel.
- Open the panel’s Config, Configuration, Server Settings, or similarly named area.
- Look for a field named Server Password, Password, or an equivalent setting.
- Enter the password and apply or save the change.
- Start or restart the server so the saved configuration is loaded.
- Join with a test client and confirm that the password prompt appears.
Not every panel uses the same menu names. If there is no password field, use the panel’s Files or File Manager view and edit config.json directly, following the self-hosted procedure above.

File manager route
- Stop the server in the hosting panel.
- Open Files, File Manager, or the equivalent tool.
- Open the server root directory and select
config.json. - Find
"Password"and replace its value with your password. - Save the file without changing its JSON syntax.
- Restart the server and test the login prompt.
Correct JSON patterns
The password must be a JSON string. These examples show the important structure; they are not passwords you should reuse.

When the password property appears between other properties, preserve the comma rules. For example, a property before Password normally ends with a comma, while the final property in an object normally does not. Do not add or remove punctuation unless you understand the surrounding structure.

Changing an existing password
Changing the password uses the same procedure as the first setup:
- Stop the server.
- Open the panel configuration or
config.json. - Replace the current
Passwordstring with the new one. - Save the valid JSON or submit the panel form.
- Restart the server.
- Give the new password to approved players through a private channel.
Players using the old value should no longer be able to authenticate after the new configuration has loaded. Anyone who still has the old value may need to be told explicitly that it has been retired.
Removing the password and making the server public
To disable the requirement, stop the server and set the value to an empty string:
"Password": ""Save the file and restart. The available documentation describes an empty value as making the server public again. Verify the result from a client after startup rather than assuming the change was applied.
Troubleshooting

Password-sharing and operational practices
Use a server-specific value
Do not reuse an important personal password. The server password is expected to be shared with other players, so treat it as a membership key rather than as protection for an email, game account, or hosting account.
Change it when the group changes
If someone who should no longer have access knows the password, change the value and restart the server. A new password is simpler than trying to track every person who may still have the old one.

Store a known-good copy of config.json before edits. Keep the backup private because it contains the current password in readable configuration text.
Do not publish the value
A password posted in a public chat, screenshot, stream overlay, or forum can spread beyond the intended group. Send it directly to approved players and remove obsolete messages where practical.
What the current documentation does—and does not—establish
The official guide and hosting instructions available for this topic describe editing config.json, saving, and restarting. Guides carrying dates from January and February 2026 do not identify a newer in-game command or alternate password workflow. That is an absence in those guides, not proof that no future interface will ever exist.
The available material also does not specify password length limits, allowed characters, escaping rules for unusual symbols, encryption at rest, or a universal control-panel label. If you need one of those details, check the documentation for the Hytale server version and hosting environment you actually run. Until a host or official guide states a rule, avoid assuming that a particular length or character set is guaranteed.
