How to Add a Custom Server Icon to Your Minecraft Java Server

Add a custom Minecraft Java server icon by creating an exact 64×64 PNG named server-icon.png, placing it in the server root, restarting, and troubleshooting common format, filename, and cache errors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a custom icon to a self-hosted Minecraft Java Edition server, create a PNG that is exactly 64×64 pixels, save it as server-icon.png using lowercase letters, and place it in the server’s root directory beside server.properties. Restart the server, then refresh the server list in your Minecraft client.

A wrong dimension, an invalid image format, an incorrect filename, or putting the file in a subfolder are the usual reasons the icon remains blank. This guide covers the complete installation path, hosting-panel uploads, image preparation, cache refreshes, and failure diagnosis.

What the server icon does

The server icon is the small image displayed beside a server entry in the Minecraft Java Edition multiplayer list. It gives players an immediate visual identifier before they connect. The image is read by the server from one specially named file; you do not select it from inside the game and you do not add a setting to server.properties.

The procedure below applies to Java Edition servers that you operate yourself or through a hosting panel. Bedrock dedicated-server support for this same server-icon.png method is not established here, so do not assume that a Bedrock server will read the file in the same way.

Requirements at a glance

Requirement Correct value What happens if it is wrong
Edition Minecraft Java Edition server Bedrock behavior is not verified by this procedure.
Pixel dimensions Exactly 64×64 pixels Other dimensions can be ignored, leaving the server-list slot blank.
File type PNG image A JPG renamed with a .png extension is still a JPG and will not work. GIF is ignored.
Filename server-icon.png Different spelling, capitalization, or an extra extension prevents detection. Linux filenames are case-sensitive.
Location Server root, beside server.properties and the world folder A copy in plugins, config, world, or another subfolder is not the server icon.
Activation Full server restart The running process may continue using the old file until it is stopped and started again.

Prepare the image

Start with a square design

Choose a simple subject that remains recognizable at thumbnail size: a logo, an initial, a mascot face, a tool, or a high-contrast symbol. The final canvas is only 64 pixels wide and 64 pixels high. Fine lines, tiny lettering, subtle gradients, and low-contrast details can disappear when the image is reduced.

Design on a square canvas from the beginning when possible. If the source artwork is rectangular, crop it deliberately rather than allowing an editor to stretch it. Stretching can make a circular emblem look oval and can push important details outside the visible area.

Resize to exactly 64×64 pixels

Use an image editor such as GIMP, Paint.NET, Pixlr, or Canva, or use an image converter that accepts an upload and lets you specify both output dimensions. Set width to 64 pixels and height to 64 pixels. If the editor offers a “lock aspect ratio” option, keep it enabled for a square source; if the source is not square, crop first and then resize.

  1. Open the original artwork in the editor or converter.
  2. Crop it to a square if its width and height differ.
  3. Choose the resize or export-size control.
  4. Enter 64 for width and 64 for height.
  5. Apply the resize and inspect the small preview at 100% zoom.
  6. Export the result as a PNG, not as JPG or GIF.

Do not rely on a filename or on the editor’s displayed zoom level to determine dimensions. Check the image properties after export. The properties should report a width of 64 pixels and a height of 64 pixels.

Export a real PNG

The extension alone does not change an image’s internal format. Renaming logo.jpg to server-icon.png leaves it encoded as JPEG, so the server can reject it. Use the editor’s PNG export option or a converter that explicitly reports PNG as the output format.

For the most predictable result, use an ordinary RGB or RGBA PNG without unusual animation or multi-image features. A static image is the appropriate input for the server-list thumbnail. Transparency is useful when your artwork is intended to sit over the game’s list background, but it is not a substitute for the required dimensions and filename.

Check the finished file before uploading

  • Dimensions read exactly 64×64 pixels.
  • The file-type or image-properties panel identifies PNG.
  • The image opens normally in an image viewer.
  • The filename is exactly server-icon.png, including lowercase spelling.
  • There is no hidden second extension such as server-icon.png.png.

Operating systems that hide known extensions can make the last error easy to miss. Turn on visible file extensions temporarily, or inspect the complete name in the file’s properties dialog.

Use the exact filename

Rename the exported image to server-icon.png. Keep the hyphen between “server” and “icon”; use lowercase letters; do not add spaces, numbers, parentheses, or a version suffix. Names such as server_icon.png, Server-Icon.png, and server-icon.PNG are not equivalent on case-sensitive systems.

On Linux-based servers, capitalization is especially important because the filesystem treats uppercase and lowercase characters as different names. A file that looks correct in a local Windows file browser can still fail after it is uploaded if the panel changes its capitalization or appends another extension.

Find the server root

Self-hosted server

The server root is the directory from which you launch the Java server and where its main files are stored. Look for server.properties and the world directory in the same folder. A typical layout may look like this:

minecraft-server/
├── server.jar
├── server.properties
├── eula.txt
├── server-icon.png
├── world/
├── logs/
└── usercache.json

The names of the server JAR, world, and auxiliary files can vary, but server-icon.png belongs at this top level. Do not place it inside the world directory or next to a client installation’s files. If you run more than one server, each instance has its own root and therefore its own icon file.

Hosted server panel

Open the panel’s file manager or connect through the FTP method supplied by the host. Navigate to the instance directory that contains server.properties. Upload server-icon.png directly into that directory. If the panel opens in a generic home folder, use the file tree to locate the specific Minecraft instance before uploading.

Some panels provide separate folders for backups, plugins, mods, and worlds. Those folders are not the root unless they also contain the active instance’s server.properties. Uploading an icon to a backup directory changes nothing on the running server.

Install the icon step by step

  1. Stop the server safely. Use the hosting panel’s Stop control or the server console’s normal shutdown process. Stopping first avoids uploading while the process is writing files and makes the restart unambiguous.
  2. Prepare the file. Confirm that the image is a genuine 64×64 PNG and that its complete name is server-icon.png.
  3. Open the root directory. Identify the folder containing server.properties and the world folder.
  4. Upload or copy the file. Place it at the root level, beside those files. Do not create a new folder for it.
  5. Check the remote name. After upload, verify that the panel did not rename the file, add “(1)”, change the case, or append another .png.
  6. Start the server again. Use the panel’s Start control or launch it through the normal server script. Wait until the server reports that it has finished starting.
  7. Inspect the multiplayer list. In Minecraft Java Edition, open Multiplayer and look for the entry. The icon should appear beside the server name after the client receives the server’s status response.

A full restart is required; merely returning to the title screen while the server process remains running does not reload the file. If you replaced an existing icon, use the same stop, replace, and start sequence.

Refresh the client when the icon is still old or blank

Minecraft can retain server-list information on the client. If the server has restarted with a valid file but the old image or an empty slot remains, remove and re-add the server entry, or otherwise refresh the client’s server list. Closing and reopening the game can also force a fresh status request. These client-side refreshes are optional when the icon updates normally; use them after confirming the server restart and file placement.

When testing, wait for the server to finish starting before checking the list. Looking at the entry while the process is still stopped or starting can show no icon even though the file itself is correct.

Troubleshoot a missing server icon

The slot is blank and there is no obvious error

This is commonly a silent failure: the server continues to advertise itself but does not load an invalid icon. Recheck the three file properties first—exact dimensions, PNG encoding, and exact filename—then confirm that the file is in the root beside server.properties. Restart the server after any correction and refresh the client list.

The image is the wrong size

Open the file properties in your editor or image viewer. Both dimensions must be 64 pixels. A 63×64 image, a 64×63 image, or a larger image such as 128×128 does not meet the required specification. Resize and export again instead of only changing the filename.

A community guide reports a “Failed to load server icon” log message for files such as 63×64 and 128×128, but that report is not independently verified here. Treat the absence of a log message as non-diagnostic: the icon can still fail silently, so verify the dimensions directly.

The file is not actually PNG

Check the file type in image properties rather than trusting the suffix. If the source began as JPG, reopen it and export through a PNG option. GIF files are ignored for this purpose. Do not simply rename either format.

The name looks right but the server cannot find it

Compare the remote filename character by character with server-icon.png. Check capitalization, the hyphen, and hidden duplicate extensions. On a Linux host, Server-icon.png and server-icon.png are different files. Also confirm the directory: the icon must be beside server.properties, not inside world, plugins, mods, or a panel backup folder.

The icon works locally but not through the hosting panel

Confirm that you uploaded to the active server instance rather than a template, staging area, or backup. Some panels display several directory levels with similar names. Locate the server.properties that belongs to the instance you actually start, upload the icon next to it, and restart that same instance.

The icon changed on disk but the client still shows the previous one

Make sure the server was fully stopped and started after the replacement. Then refresh the client’s server list by removing and re-adding the entry or restarting the game. Check from a second Java Edition client only after the server-side checks are complete; a single stale client view does not prove that the upload failed.

The image is technically valid but looks unreadable

At 64×64 pixels, tiny text and delicate line art have very few pixels in which to render. Return to the source artwork, enlarge the main subject, increase contrast, simplify the palette, and export again at 64×64. A bold silhouette normally survives reduction better than a detailed scene or a soft gradient.

Design guidance for a useful icon

Prioritize recognition

Players usually see the icon beside a server name at a small display size. Make one feature dominant: a large letter, a single symbol, or a high-contrast character face. If you include text, use very few characters and a heavy typeface; long server names belong in the server-name field rather than inside the image.

Use contrast and safe margins

Separate the foreground from the background with clear brightness or hue contrast. Keep important details away from the outermost pixels so that visual scaling or rounded presentation does not clip them. Preview the exported file at its actual size instead of judging only from a large original canvas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep variants organized

Store editable source artwork under a different name and keep only the final 64×64 PNG in the server root. For example, a layered design can remain in your project folder while the server receives server-icon.png. This prevents accidentally uploading a large source file or replacing the required icon with an editor’s project format.

Changing the icon later

To update the image, create a replacement that satisfies the same requirements, stop the server, overwrite the existing server-icon.png, and start the server again. If players still see the previous image, refresh their server-list entries. Keeping the same filename is preferable to leaving multiple similarly named images in the root, because the server looks for the specific conventional name.

For several independent servers on one machine, repeat the process separately in each server root. A single icon in a parent directory does not automatically apply to child folders or to other instances.

Java Edition and Bedrock limitation

This method is for Minecraft Java Edition servers. The available documentation does not establish that a Bedrock dedicated server accepts the same root-level server-icon.png file, so Bedrock administrators should consult the documentation for their exact server software and version rather than copying this procedure by assumption. The Java steps also presume a conventional self-hosted or panel-managed server; a proxy, network lobby, or custom server platform may have its own icon mechanism.
