A language selector in Ghost is a set of theme links that takes readers to the right language version of your site. It does not translate posts or pair translated versions automatically. Choose how your language content is organized first; then make the selector point to those destinations.
What a Ghost language selector does—and what it does not do
The selector is a navigation element, usually placed in the theme’s main navigation or another visible area. Its links lead to language destinations that your publication has already created.

Ghost’s theme translation helper localizes theme text according to the publication language set in Admin. Ghost explicitly says this helper is not intended for multilingual content sites: it does not create translated posts, alternate URLs, or links between corresponding articles.

That is a dated announcement, not a verified current language count, and it concerns interface components rather than your post content.

Choose where each language version will live
Decide on the publishing architecture before adding selector links. Ghost’s guidance distinguishes sites publishing different content in each language from sites publishing the same content in multiple languages.

Ghost’s recommendations are guidance, not a claim that only one architecture can work. Its routing documentation describes locale collections as a way to create separate URL sections within one install; Ghost’s translation guidance recommends separate installs when each language has different content.

Set up locale collections in one Ghost install
For a single-install approach, Ghost documents collections filtered by locale tags. In its example, the default collection excludes posts tagged with the private #de tag, while the German collection includes them. The public route uses the tag’s slug, hash-de.

#detag to posts intended for the German collection. Leave default-language posts without that tag so the collection filters separate the two sets. - Define the routes. Put the collection paths, permalinks, templates, and filters in
routes.yaml, following the documented pattern and adapting the template names to your theme. - Upload and check the configuration. Ghost’s routing documentation describes uploading route configuration in Admin under Settings → Labs. Confirm the exact interface for your Ghost version before following a version-specific walkthrough.
- Test both language sections. Check that the default collection excludes the locale-tagged posts, the locale path serves the intended posts, and pagination works without posts appearing in both collections unintentionally.
Keep locale paths distinct from content slugs: Ghost warns that route slugs can conflict with content slugs, and overlapping collection filters can cause rendering or pagination problems. The routing pattern establishes separate sections; it does not identify which German post corresponds to a particular default-language post.

Add clear links in the theme
Once destinations exist, add links in the theme’s navigation or another reader-facing area. Use the language names readers recognize—for example, “English” and “Deutsch”—rather than relying on a flag alone. Link each label to the intended language home or to a counterpart only when you have explicitly established that correspondence.
Decide what happens when a page has no translation. A selector can take the reader to that language’s landing page, or omit the counterpart link; describe the behavior where it is not obvious. Do not promise automatic language detection or automatic article matching unless your implementation actually provides it.

Set the publication language separately
In Ghost Admin, open Settings → General → Publication language to set the site’s language. Ghost says this setting tells search engines what language the content is in. It is site metadata, not a visible selector, and changing it does not generate translated content or create language routes. See Ghost’s site setup guidance for the setting.

Keep the selector and the content architecture aligned
- Use language links only for destinations that exist and are maintained.
- Keep route paths distinct and collection filters unambiguous.
- Test locale pages, navigation links, and pagination after changing routes or tags.
- Do not treat theme-string translation as a translation workflow for posts.
