How to Add a Delay Before ScreenshotAPI Captures a Page

Add a fixed pre-capture wait to ScreenshotAPI.net with the delay parameter, and learn when condition-based waits or lazy loading are a better fit.

For ScreenshotAPI.net’s documented /v3/screenshot service, add the delay query parameter with the number of milliseconds to wait after the page-load wait and before capture. For example, delay=2000 adds two seconds; the documented default, delay=0, adds no extra wait. This setting is distinct from the option that selects a page-load event.

Add a fixed delay to the ScreenshotAPI.net request

Include delay in the query parameters sent to the documented /v3/screenshot endpoint. Set its value in milliseconds: delay=500 is half a second, while delay=2000 is two seconds. The service documents a default of zero, so omitting the parameter adds no fixed pause. See ScreenshotAPI.net’s delay and lazy-loading documentation.

The delay is useful when a page needs a predictable extra interval for an animation, an API response, or a script that renders content after the initial load. It is a fixed pause, not a guarantee that a particular element or request has finished.

Choose the right kind of wait

Need Setting What it does
Add a known pause after the page-load wait delay Waits the specified number of milliseconds before capture; documented default is 0.
Wait for a particular element wait_for_selector Waits for a CSS selector, which is more appropriate when readiness depends on specific page content.
Wait for asynchronous network activity to settle wait_for_event=networkidle Selects the network-idle event as the page readiness condition.

The documentation describes the fixed delay, selector wait, and network-idle wait as controls that can be combined. Use a fixed delay when an approximate, stable interval is sufficient; prefer a condition-based wait when you know what must be ready. These options are documented in the ScreenshotAPI.net feature overview.

Account for lazy-loaded content and timeouts

A post-load delay does not itself scroll a page to trigger content that loads only when it enters the viewport. For that case, ScreenshotAPI.net documents lazy_load=true, which scrolls through the page. Its separate scroll_delay setting controls the pause between scroll steps and defaults to 500 ms. A documented example combines lazy_load=true with delay=10000.

Keep the total capture time in mind: a high scroll delay on a long page can push rendering past the documented default timeout of 100000 ms. Increasing delay also adds waiting time, so use the shortest interval that reliably captures the content you need. Parameter details are in the official delay and lazy-loading guide.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a screenshot API without assembling browser automation yourself, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. Its clean-shot options accept consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. ScreenshotNeo also has an MCP server for AI agents, with tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture.

For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Troubleshoot a screenshot that is still incomplete

  • The page is captured before a late element appears: increase delay in milliseconds, or use wait_for_selector if the element has a dependable CSS selector.
  • The page relies on asynchronous requests: try wait_for_event=networkidle rather than relying only on a fixed pause.
  • Images or sections farther down the page are missing: enable lazy_load=true so the browser scrolls and triggers deferred content. Adjust scroll_delay only as needed.
  • The capture times out: reduce unnecessary fixed or scroll delays, especially on long pages. The documented default timeout is 100000 ms; the documentation warns that a high scroll delay can push a long render beyond it.
  • The parameter appears to have no effect: verify that the request is using ScreenshotAPI.net’s documented /v3/screenshot service. Similarly named screenshot services can use different endpoints and parameter names.

Check the endpoint before copying parameters

This guidance applies specifically to ScreenshotAPI.net’s documented /v3/screenshot service. Other products with similar names may use different endpoints or settings, so match the parameters to the API and account you are actually calling.
