How to Send a Winamp Radio Playlist to YouTube Live with OBS

To send a Winamp playlist to YouTube Live, play it in Winamp, capture its audio in OBS, then send OBS’s stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. On supported Windows versions, OBS can capture Winamp directly; capturing the audio output device is a fallback. Preview the feed and check the sound before going live. This streams the audio Winamp is playing—it is not a guide to setting up a SHOUTcast broadcast server.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  • Winamp with the playlist or internet radio entry you want to play, and OBS Studio installed on the computer running Winamp.
  • A suitable visual source in OBS, such as a still image or title, if you do not want the broadcast to show a blank scene.
  • Permission to stream the music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including copyrighted content.

Prepare and play the playlist in Winamp

  1. Load or create your playlist in Winamp’s Playlist Editor or Media Library. Winamp playlists can organize tracks, internet radio stations, and other media resources in a chosen order. The exact controls can vary by Winamp version; consult Winamp’s Playlist Editor help for the version-specific interface.
  2. Start playback and confirm you can hear the playlist through the intended Windows output device. If the playlist includes an internet radio entry, confirm it connects and plays before setting up OBS.
  3. If playback is silent, check the selected output device in Winamp and Windows. Winamp’s official help describes DirectSound Output as its recommended normal playback output in the versions covered by that help; do not assume every control is identical in every build.

Capture Winamp audio in OBS

Choose one audio route. Application capture is more selective because it isolates Winamp; output-device capture includes audio routed through the selected device and is a fallback if application capture is unavailable or incompatible.

Method What it captures Requirements and caveats
Application Audio Capture Winamp’s audio specifically OBS documents this feature from OBS Studio 28 on Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. Some applications’ audio paths may not be compatible.
Audio Output Capture Sound from the chosen output device Useful if application capture fails, but it may capture other sounds from that device too. Avoid capturing the same device both in the scene and globally in OBS audio settings, as this can cause echo.

These version and operating-system requirements are documented in the OBS Application Audio Capture Guide. OBS also documents output-device capture and its echo caveat in its audio sources guide.

Option A: Capture Winamp directly

  1. In OBS, select the scene you will use and click the + under Sources.
  2. Choose Application Audio Capture, create the source, and select Winamp from the application list.
  3. Play audio in Winamp and watch the OBS audio mixer. Its meter should move when Winamp plays.
  4. To avoid doubled sound, disable global Desktop Audio under Settings → Audio when you are using application audio capture, unless you specifically need another desktop-audio route.

Option B: Capture the Windows output device

  1. In OBS, click the + under Sources and choose Audio Output Capture.
  2. Select the Windows output device that Winamp uses, then start playback and check that the OBS mixer meter moves.
  3. If this source is in a scene, avoid selecting the same device as a global audio source under Settings → Audio. Duplicate capture can produce an echo or doubled music.

Build the scene and check the sound

An OBS scene can contain audio and visual sources. If the stream should show more than a blank scene, add an image, text title, media source, or another appropriate visual under Sources. A visualizer is optional; the essential task for this workflow is capturing the audio Winamp is playing.

  • Keep other sounds, such as notifications, from interrupting the playlist. Application capture can help isolate Winamp; device capture may include other audio played through that output.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server or stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details YouTube provides. If using a custom server option, enter the URL and key in their respective fields.
  4. Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials. If the key is exposed, reset it in the Live Control Room and update OBS. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and stream-key guidance.

Preview, go live, and end the stream

  1. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in the YouTube Live Control Room preview.
  2. Check that the image or scene is correct and that the audio is present, clear, and not doubled. If you are using a scheduled stream, click Go live in YouTube after checking the preview.
  3. Monitor the broadcast while it is running. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder ahead of an event, starting it before the event, and monitoring audio and video quality.
  4. When finished, stop the encoder in OBS and end the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; confirm the current platform behavior if archiving is important.

Music rights and YouTube interruptions

Having a playlist or being able to play a track does not by itself grant permission to broadcast it. YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content. A detected match may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the material continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. Public, unlisted, and private visibility settings do not grant music rights.

If you have licensed third-party music, YouTube says the rights owner may still need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the stream to proceed without interruption. Check YouTube’s guidance on live-stream copyright and resolve any required permissions before broadcasting.

Troubleshooting

The OBS audio meter is not moving

  • Confirm Winamp is playing and producing sound.
  • Check which output device Winamp uses, then select Winamp in Application Audio Capture or that matching device in Audio Output Capture.
  • If application capture is selected but does not work with Winamp’s audio path, try output-device capture instead. OBS documents the capture methods but does not guarantee compatibility with every Winamp configuration.

The music echoes or plays twice

  • Do not capture Winamp with Application Audio Capture and also capture the same sound through Desktop Audio.
  • If using Audio Output Capture in a scene, make sure that same output device is not also selected globally under Settings → Audio.

Application Audio Capture is missing or does not work

  • Check that you are using OBS Studio 28 or later and Windows 10 version 2004 or later, or Windows 11.
  • Some application audio outputs are incompatible with this capture method. Use Audio Output Capture for the device Winamp plays through, and avoid adding a duplicate global capture route.

YouTube does not receive the feed

  • Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and key for the stream selected in YouTube Studio.
  • Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming. A newly enabled first stream may take up to 24 hours to become available.
  • Wait for the Live Control Room preview before starting a scheduled broadcast; if the preview does not appear, recheck the encoder settings and connection.

The broadcast is interrupted after music starts

  • Check YouTube’s notice for a third-party content match. Stop or replace material you do not have rights to stream.
  • If you have a license, check whether the rights owner needs to allowlist your channel through Content ID.

The stream key may have been exposed

Reset the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then replace the saved key in OBS before streaming again.
