A QR code or link adds a pass to Apple Wallet only when it leads to a Wallet-compatible pass or, on supported iPhones, to a barcode or QR-code image that Wallet can turn into a basic pass. Open the issuer’s page and look for Add to Apple Wallet; if you have an image of a code, open it in Photos and use Add to Wallet if that option appears. Scanning any QR code or opening any URL does not automatically create a Wallet pass.
Which method should you use?
| What you have | What to do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| A QR code or link from a business, event, school, gym, or other issuer | Open the link or the message, app, email, or website containing the pass; choose Add to Apple Wallet. | The issuer must offer a Wallet-compatible pass. Apple’s instructions are at Use passes in Wallet on iPhone. |
| A photo or screenshot containing a barcode or QR code | Open the image in Photos and choose Add to Wallet if prompted. | Apple documents this on iOS 27 or later for an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro or later; availability can vary by region and language. See Create passes in Wallet on iPhone. |
| A code that changes, rotates, or expires | Use the issuer’s live pass or app rather than relying on a photo. | A photo of an expiring code may not work, as Apple explains in Create a pass using Siri Mode in Apple Wallet. |
Add a pass from the issuer’s QR code or link
Many QR codes simply open a website or app. After scanning one, check the destination for the issuer’s own Add to Apple Wallet button; the QR code itself is not necessarily the pass.

- Open the email, text, app, notification, or website where the issuer provided the pass, or scan its QR code to open the issuer’s page.
- Tap Add to Apple Wallet.
- Follow the onscreen instructions, then tap Add if that confirmation appears.
If the Add to Apple Wallet option is missing, ask the organization that issued the pass whether it supports Apple Wallet. Apple describes the issuer-provided workflow in its Wallet pass instructions.

Create a pass from a QR-code or barcode image
Apple separately documents making a pass from a photo or screenshot that contains a barcode or QR code. This is not the same as importing an arbitrary web address: the starting point is an image in Photos, and the Wallet option must be available.

Check device and software eligibility
Apple’s current iPhone guide says this image-based feature requires iOS 27 or later and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro or later. Availability may also vary by region and language. If your device or software does not meet those conditions, use the issuer’s Add to Apple Wallet flow instead. See Apple’s Create passes in Wallet guide.
Use the image in Photos
- Save the QR-code or barcode image to Photos, or take a screenshot that clearly shows the code.
- Open the image in Photos and look for Add to Wallet.
- If the option appears, tap it and follow the onscreen steps.
If Photos does not offer Add to Wallet, the image may not be recognized or the feature may not be available for your device, software, region, or language. Open the issuer’s original app or link to look for its supported pass instead.

When a photo or manually created pass will not work
A static image can become invalid if its barcode or QR code changes or expires. Apple Support warns: “Some barcodes or QR codes rotate and change periodically, causing them to expire. If you take a photo of a barcode or QR code that expires, such as a ticket for a concert, the pass won’t work.” The warning appears in Apple’s September 15, 2026 support article. Do not rely on a screenshot for a ticket or credential with a rotating code; use the issuer’s live version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWallet also documents a manual option for making a basic pass-like record: tap the add-card button in Wallet, choose Create a Pass, then Create Pass Manually, select a template, and edit its fields. Apple does not say that manual entry reproduces an issuer’s live credential or validates the code behind it. See Apple’s pass-creation instructions.
