You can add an email countdown without writing code by choosing a deadline, using your email platform’s timer block or a third-party generator, inserting the provided content in the editor, and testing how it appears in real inboxes. The exact controls depend on your email service provider (ESP), plan, timer setup, and recipients’ email clients.
Step 1: Set the deadline and timezone
Decide when the offer or event actually ends before you build the timer. Use the same deadline and timezone in the email copy, timer, and destination page; otherwise, readers may see conflicting information.

For Omnisend’s native countdown block, the timer uses the timezone configured in Store settings and one fixed end date and time for every recipient. It does not create a separate countdown based on when each person opens the email. Omnisend documents these deadline and timezone settings.

Step 2: Choose a native timer or a generator
Check your ESP’s current editor and plan before choosing a route. Native support and third-party workflows vary by platform, and plan eligibility can change.

Step 3: Insert the timer in the email editor
Use the block or insertion method documented for your ESP. Email editors may call the relevant option an HTML block, custom HTML item, or countdown block. A web-page script pasted into an email is not a reliable substitute for the image or embed content supplied for email use.

In Klaviyo, using a generator
- Create the timer in the generator, set its deadline and style, and copy the embed code it provides for email.
- In the email editor, add an HTML block and paste the code into that block. Klaviyo’s example uses MailTimers; the specific generator controls and output can differ.
In Omnisend
- For the native option, add the countdown block in the Email Builder and configure its deadline and appearance.
- For a third-party timer, use an HTML block or custom HTML item to add the supplied email content. Omnisend explains how to add and configure a custom HTML item.
Step 4: Send a test and check expiry behavior
Send a test message and inspect it in the inboxes and on the devices your audience actually uses. A timer can depend on its image loading, configuration, and the recipient’s email client; it may not animate or display the expected remaining time in every inbox.

- Check whether the timer image loads, and whether the displayed time makes sense against the deadline you set.
- Open the message in key audience email clients. Klaviyo specifically notes Apple Mail preloading as a possible cause of incorrect remaining time and says Outlook 2007, 2010, and 2013 show only the first GIF frame.
- If the timer links to an offer or event, follow the link and confirm it reaches the correct destination.
- Check what recipients see after the timer expires. Omnisend’s native timer can switch to a fallback image; ensure expired recipients are not left with a stale offer as the only visible message.
