In OBS Studio, put your gaming VODs and countdown in an explicitly ordered sequence, or switch to a countdown scene at each video boundary. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist, but its official guide does not document automatically inserting a separate slate after every playlist item. Plan that transition yourself and rehearse the full sequence before going live.
Choose how the countdown will appear
A countdown slate can be an animated video, a still image, or editable text in an OBS scene. The important decision is how it fits between VODs: include countdown media in the playback order, or switch scenes at each boundary.

| Approach | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Countdown video | Displays an animated timer as a media file. | Make sure it starts from the beginning when activated if you use it as a scene source. |
| Static image | Displays a simple slate. | A still image does not count down without an additional timer source. |
| Slate embedded in the sequence | Places the countdown media between VOD files in the intended playback order. | The order is explicit, but you must set up the sequence rather than expect OBS to insert a slate automatically. |
| Scene switch | Changes from the VOD scene to a slate scene at each video boundary. | Hotkeys can make manual switching practical, but each transition needs controlling and testing. |

Create the countdown slate
Add a separate OBS scene for the slate. For an animated countdown, add the local countdown file as a Media Source. For a static slate, add an Image source; for editable wording, add a Text source. OBS scenes can combine these source types.
-
Make a countdown video restart as needed
If the slate is a video source in its own scene, review the Media Source playback settings and enable restarting when the source becomes active if you want the countdown to begin at the start each time that scene is activated.

Define every transition
Either put the countdown media between VODs in one deliberately ordered playback sequence, or switch to the slate scene at each video boundary. OBS’s documented VLC playlist support does not promise automatic insertion of a separate scene or slate after each playlist entry. OBS hotkeys can help with manual scene changes; configure and test the exact sequence rather than relying on undocumented automation.

Check copyright and stream eligibility
Having permission to play a file locally does not by itself establish that you may broadcast it. Before streaming gaming VODs or other media, check that you have the necessary rights and that the content follows YouTube’s applicable live-stream rules. A countdown slate does not change the rights status of the videos it separates.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC as well.
- The VODs play in an unexpected order: Review the files in the VLC playlist and check whether shuffle is enabled. Turn shuffle off if you need a fixed sequence.
- The countdown begins partway through: Check the Media Source playback options and use restart when the source becomes active if appropriate. Rehearse repeated scene activations.
- The slate never appears between playlist videos: Do not assume OBS inserts it automatically. Put the slate media into an explicit playback sequence or switch to its scene at each boundary.
- The slate appears but does not count down: A still image is static. Use a countdown video or add a timer source.
- The live stream does not receive the OBS output: Recheck the YouTube stream key and OBS connection settings using YouTube’s encoder setup flow.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded videos live around the clock, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on a computer at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not go live from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- Each slot streams uploaded video at the quality provided, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details, then start your free first day.
