Since its 2022 debut, the Mac Studio has kept its compact professional-desktop role while advancing through new chip generations, higher memory and storage ceilings, expanded display support, and faster connections. Apple’s latest announced generation, from August 2026, pairs M5 Max or M5 Ultra with Thunderbolt 5.

Apple’s release announcements cited here show no Mac Studio refresh in 2024. The lineup also did not move in a simple number-for-number sequence: the 2025 release paired M4 Max with M3 Ultra.
How the Mac Studio changed by generation
2022: A new compact desktop with M1 Max or M1 Ultra
Apple introduced Mac Studio in March 2022 as a compact system for professional work. Its configurations offered up to 64GB unified memory with M1 Max or 128GB with M1 Ultra, and up to 8TB SSD. The rear panel included four Thunderbolt 4 ports, 10Gb Ethernet, two USB-A ports, HDMI and a high-impedance headphone jack; the front had two USB-C ports and an SD card slot. Apple said it could drive up to four Pro Display XDRs plus a 4K TV. Apple also reported SSD performance up to 7.4GB/s and, for M1 Ultra, playback of up to 18 streams of 8K ProRes 422. 2023: M2 chips, more memory and broader display support
The June 2023 update offered M2 Max with up to 96GB unified memory and M2 Ultra with up to 192GB. Apple specified memory bandwidth of 400GB/s for M2 Max and 800GB/s for M2 Ultra. Connectivity changes included Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and higher-bandwidth HDMI with support for up to 8K resolution at 240Hz. Apple said an M2 Ultra Mac Studio could support up to six Pro Display XDRs. It also reported M2 Max as up to 50 percent faster than the previous-generation Mac Studio in its stated comparison, and M2 Ultra as up to three times faster than the M1 Ultra model. Those comparisons are Apple’s claims and depend on the tested task and comparison setup; they are not a universal speed multiplier. Apple’s June 2023 announcement.

2025: Thunderbolt 5 and a major M3 Ultra capacity increase
In March 2025, Apple paired M4 Max with the newer M3 Ultra. The M4 Max configuration supported up to 128GB unified memory; M3 Ultra configurations went up to 512GB unified memory and 16TB SSD. Thunderbolt 5 was the headline connectivity change, with Apple citing transfer speeds up to 120Gb/s. Apple said M3 Ultra could drive up to eight Pro Display XDRs at full 6K resolution. It described M3 Ultra as nearly twice as fast as M4 Max for workloads that use high CPU and GPU core counts and large unified memory. That qualification matters: the Ultra tier’s extra capacity and processing resources are most relevant to demanding, parallel workloads, not necessarily every task. Apple’s March 2025 announcement.
2026: M5 Max and M5 Ultra keep Thunderbolt 5
Apple announced M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026. M5 Max has an 18-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU and up to 128GB unified memory. M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB unified memory and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. Apple retained Thunderbolt 5 and described a next-generation SSD architecture that can provide up to twice the storage performance. Apple reported up to 1.3x higher multithreaded performance and up to 1.8x faster graphics versus the previous generation, as well as up to 33 streams of 8K ProRes 422 at 30 fps on M5 Ultra. These are Apple’s stated comparisons and capability claims, not independent test results; performance varies by workload. Apple’s August 2026 announcement.

What changed most over time
Chip tiers and workload fit
The first two generations offered Max and Ultra versions from the same chip family: M1 in 2022 and M2 in 2023. In 2025, Apple paired M4 Max with M3 Ultra; in 2026, it returned to matching M5 Max and M5 Ultra. Across these releases, Ultra has generally been the higher-capacity choice, particularly for projects able to use more CPU and GPU resources and larger unified memory. The right tier depends on the application and project, rather than the chip label alone.
Memory and internal storage
The highest unified-memory configuration rose from 128GB at launch to 192GB on M2 Ultra, then 512GB on M3 Ultra. Apple specified up to 512GB for M5 Ultra as well. The announced SSD ceiling increased from 8TB in 2022 to 16TB for the 2025 M3 Ultra configuration; the 2026 announcement cited a faster SSD architecture but did not specify a higher maximum capacity. Memory and storage are distinct: unified memory serves active workloads, while the SSD holds files and applications.

Ports, wireless and displays
The original system used Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 6. The 2023 generation added Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, updated HDMI capabilities, and higher stated display counts. Thunderbolt 5 arrived with the 2025 generation and continued in 2026. Display limits depend on the chip and configuration: Apple’s stated maximum rose from four Pro Display XDRs plus a 4K TV at launch to six XDRs on M2 Ultra and eight full-6K XDRs on M3 Ultra.
Compact desktop, not an internal-expansion tower
Across generations Apple has continued to position Mac Studio as a compact desktop with extensive built-in connectivity. It is not presented as a system with internal PCIe expansion slots. Thunderbolt can connect external expansion chassis; Apple points users who need internal expansion to Mac Pro.

How to judge an upgrade between generations
Compare the change against the work you actually do, rather than treating Apple’s workload-specific performance claims as a single ranking. Check these factors:
- Application and task: Identify whether your main work is video editing, 3D rendering, coding, AI processing, or another demanding workload, and look for a comparison that uses the same application and a relevant previous model.
- Chip tier: Decide whether your work can benefit from the greater CPU/GPU resources of Ultra or whether a Max configuration is sufficient.
- Unified memory: Match capacity to the size of the projects and data you need active at once; do not equate a larger maximum with a guaranteed speedup.
- Storage plan: Check the internal SSD capacity you need and whether external storage over Thunderbolt suits the rest of your workflow.
- Displays and ports: Verify the specific model’s supported display count and resolution, plus the ports your peripherals require.
- Expansion: Decide whether external Thunderbolt expansion is enough or whether your workflow requires internal PCIe slots.
Apple’s announcements span video, rendering, coding, AI and scientific workloads, but their results do not establish one all-purpose speed ranking. Treat each performance figure as a claim about its stated task and comparison system.
