Add both overlays by creating a Browser Source in your OBS scene and loading a local HTML file or a hosted overlay URL. Set the source’s width and height for your layout, then position it over the video. For a 24/7 stream, also check that the source stays loaded in the scene that is on air and confirm the clock’s time zone before broadcasting.
Choose a local or hosted overlay
OBS Browser Source loads a web page—either a file on your computer or a URL—inside a scene. OBS describes it as “quite literally a web browser that you can add directly to OBS.” It is available through official OBS packages for Windows, macOS, and Linux. OBS Browser Source documentation.

- Local HTML: Choose this if you have an overlay page saved on the streaming computer or want to avoid depending on a remote overlay host. The local page still needs to implement the clock and ticker.
- Hosted overlay: Choose this if an overlay service or your web app provides a URL and you want to configure the content or appearance through that provider. Check its clock, time-zone, ticker-editing, and styling controls; those features are not provided automatically by OBS.
Add the overlay in OBS
- Prepare the overlay. Obtain or create a web page that displays both a clock and a ticker. Decide what the ticker should say and verify how the page handles time zones. OBS provides the Browser Source container, not the clock or ticker content itself.
- Add a Browser Source. In the OBS scene that will be broadcast, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose Browser. Create a new source or select an existing one. OBS labels and layout can vary by version.
- Load the page. For a local page, enable Local file and select the HTML file. For a hosted overlay, leave Local file off and enter the supplied URL.
- Set the viewport. Enter width and height appropriate to the overlay layout and stream canvas. OBS’s documented defaults are 800 × 600, so a new source may need different dimensions. Then place and scale it in the preview so the clock and ticker are readable without covering important video.
- Check appearance and persistence. Browser Source defaults to a transparent background, removes page margins, and hides overflow scrollbars; custom CSS is available in the source properties. Check Shutdown source when not visible: enabled, it unloads the page when hidden or when its scene is not active. For a continuous stream, keep the source in the on-air scene and make sure scene switching will not leave it unloaded.
- Test the clock and ticker. Confirm the displayed time zone, text, placement, and legibility in OBS preview. Test the source in a broadcast before relying on it for a long run.
Keep the overlay running in a 24/7 scene
A Browser Source can refresh or be unloaded depending on its settings and whether its scene is active. OBS exposes controls for source dimensions, custom frame rate, CSS, refresh behavior, and shutdown when not visible. For a 24/7 scene, avoid hiding the source or switching to a scene that omits it; review refresh behavior if the overlay page needs to recover after a load problem. Exact controls can vary with the OBS version.
A clock that renders correctly can still show the wrong local time. Verify the overlay’s documented time-zone behavior and check the actual output in a test broadcast; OBS does not validate the page’s time-zone choice.

Test YouTube’s stream before leaving it live
YouTube Help advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Include audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, and monitor stream health. If this is the channel’s first live stream, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Studio, use the Live server URL and stream key in your encoder workflow; treat the stream key as a credential and do not expose it in a public screen capture. See YouTube’s live encoder setup guidance.
H.264 bitrate recommendations
YouTube Help’s encoder table, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended H.264 settings. They are encoder guidance—not requirements for adding an overlay—and bitrate recommendations differ for other codecs.
Rank #2
| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Use YouTube’s current table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

When a camera-specific ticker system makes sense
CamStreamer’s Infoticker guide describes a camera-overlay option with a 12-hour or 24-hour clock, one or two lines of text, text and background colors, a switching interval, and a crawl effect on supported camera processors. Ticker text can be entered directly or supplied from a remotely hosted TXT file; the guide says the widget can display continually when no schedule is filled in. Its stated prerequisites are an AXIS camera, CamStreamer App, and CamOverlay App, so it is a specialized camera ecosystem, not a required OBS plugin. CamStreamer Infoticker setup guide.

Troubleshoot common issues
- Clock or ticker is missing: Check that the Browser Source points to the correct local file or URL and that the page itself displays the intended elements. Confirm the source is visible in the active scene.
- Overlay is cropped or misplaced: Adjust the Browser Source width and height for the layout, then reposition or scale it in the scene. The documented 800 × 600 default may not fit your canvas.
- Background or scrollbars appear unexpectedly: OBS defaults to a transparent background, removes page margins, and hides overflow scrollbars. Review the page’s CSS and any custom CSS set in the Browser Source properties.
- Overlay disappears after a scene change: Review Shutdown source when not visible and ensure the source is present in the scene that goes on air. This setting unloads the page when hidden or outside the active scene.
- Clock shows the wrong time: Check the overlay provider’s time-zone setting or documentation, then verify the displayed time in preview and a test broadcast.
- Stream does not start: If live streaming has not previously been activated on the channel, allow for YouTube’s stated activation period of up to 24 hours. Check that the encoder uses the YouTube Live server URL and the correct stream key.
- Stream health is poor: Test with audio and movement similar to the planned program, monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and compare encoder settings with YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec.
