Create a separate holding scene in OBS with a calm branded image or short animation, then switch to it when the loop needs attention. OBS can loop local media and playlists, but its documented playback controls do not provide a universal detector that recognizes every playback failure and switches scenes automatically. Plan to monitor the stream and switch scenes yourself unless you have separately tested a specific automation.
Design a child-appropriate fallback screen
Make a still image or short holding animation at the dimensions of your OBS canvas. Keep it simple and readable on a phone-sized player: use your channel or brand name and a reassuring message such as “We’ll be right back.” Avoid alarming error language or asking children to leave the stream or take action elsewhere. These are design recommendations, not YouTube requirements.

Create a holding scene in OBS
- In the OBS Scenes panel, add a scene named something unmistakable, such as “Holding screen.”
- In that scene, add the holding graphic as an Image source, or add a local media source for an animation.
- Resize and position it to fill the canvas. Check the result in the preview, including text placement and readability.
- Keep this scene separate from the loop scene so you can select it quickly when playback needs attention.
Configure the video loop
One local video file
In the scene used for the loop, add a Media Source and select the local file. Enable its Loop option if the file should repeat. OBS’s Media Sources documentation also describes playback-end behavior; verify the result with your actual file and settings rather than assuming an ended-file option detects all faults. A playlist of files
For a sequence, add a VLC Video source and configure the playlist and Loop Playlist option. VLC must be installed for the source to be available; OBS specifies 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. Check the playlist order, looping, and visibility behavior with the actual media. OBS Media Sources documentation

Why a background image is not a full fallback
You can place a persistent image below the video source, but it will only show when the video source is hidden. It cannot cover a frozen or still-visible frame. A distinct holding scene is easier for an operator to invoke when the picture is stuck or needs investigation.
Test the failure and switching process
- Rehearse in a private or unlisted stream before relying on the setup publicly.
- Test a missing file, playback ending, or the likely failure in your actual workflow. Observe whether OBS shows a blank canvas, the last frame, or another result.
- Switch the active program to the holding scene and confirm the change appears in the stream output—not only in an OBS preview or an inactive scene.
- Test audio separately. A fallback image does not itself establish that audio has stopped or that the stream is healthy.
- Before a public stream, check the Live Control Room preview, verify the event’s accessibility, and monitor audio and video quality while live. YouTube’s guidance says to check the preview before clicking Start Streaming. YouTube live streaming tips
Do not treat “show nothing when playback ends” as a general detector for decoder errors, a frozen frame, or network problems. OBS documents playback and source controls; test the specific media source and failure mode you expect.

Set the stream’s audience accurately
In YouTube Live Control Room, designate whether the stream is Made for Kids based on the content and intended audience. YouTube lists factors such as subject matter, intended or actual audience, child actors, characters or toys that appeal to children, language, activities, and children’s songs or stories. A holding screen does not change the audience of the stream, and the mere presence of children in a video does not by itself settle the designation. YouTube: Set your channel or video’s audience

For streams designated Made for Kids, YouTube restricts features including live chat and personalized advertising. Troubleshoot common fallback problems
- The file ends and the loop stops: Check the Media Source Loop setting for a single file, or Loop Playlist for VLC Video. Confirm the playback-end behavior with the selected source and file. OBS Media Sources documentation
- The holding screen is visible in OBS but not to viewers: Confirm that the holding scene is the active program scene, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health. YouTube recommends checking the preview and monitoring quality. YouTube live streaming tips
- The video or audio quality is poor: Inspect encoder status and CPU load as part of troubleshooting; YouTube identifies encoder errors and CPU load as items to check. YouTube live streaming troubleshooting
- VLC Video is unavailable: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for this source. OBS Media Sources documentation
- A backup encoder is part of the setup: Test failover before depending on it. YouTube describes stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network cable as ways to test whether the player rolls to the backup. YouTube live streaming tips
- The channel has a live-stream restriction: Do not try to evade it by streaming through another channel. YouTube live streaming policies
