You can use FFmpeg on Ubuntu to send prepared story videos to YouTube Live continuously, but a 24/7 feed is not the same as a guaranteed 24-hour YouTube replay. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If viewers need a complete replay, record locally and consider scheduling shorter sessions.
This guide covers the YouTube setup, encoder settings, Ubuntu deployment choices, children’s-content considerations, and ways to monitor an unattended stream. The exact FFmpeg command depends on how your media is arranged and on your installed FFmpeg build; there is no single command here claimed to be tested for every playlist or file.

What you need before streaming
FFmpeg reads your prepared video and audio, loops or schedules the media, encodes it to a format YouTube accepts, and sends it to YouTube’s ingest server. Ubuntu is the host operating system; YouTube Studio supplies the ingest URL and stream key. The process can run on a local Ubuntu machine or on a rented VPS, but neither arrangement by itself guarantees uninterrupted availability.

- Prepared media and streaming rights. Use story text, narration, illustrations, cover art, and music that you have permission to broadcast. YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, copyright rules, and other policies apply to live content.
- An Ubuntu host and an installed FFmpeg build. The machine must remain powered on and connected for a local setup. A VPS can run independently of your home computer, but its storage, outbound network capacity, restart access, and cost need to suit your use.
- Sufficient sustained upload capacity. Choose settings your connection can maintain, not merely a peak speed shown by a speed test. YouTube’s network guidance recommends 20% more upload capacity than the total stream bitrate, accounting for a primary and backup feed if you use one.
- A local recording plan if the replay matters. A continuous YouTube event may not produce a complete on-platform archive.
Choose the audience setting accurately
When you create or schedule the broadcast, answer YouTube’s audience question based on the content and intended audience. Do not choose a setting to preserve features or advertising; the designation has consequences for the livestream and its archive.

If the stream is marked made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and chat replay, Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may still appear. Monetization depends on channel eligibility and applicable YouTube policies; do not plan around chat interaction or personalized advertising for a made-for-kids stream.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API includes a selfDeclaredMadeForKids field for a broadcast and a separate read-only madeForKids status. Those fields can support automation, but they do not replace the creator’s responsibility to classify the content accurately.
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Verify the channel and check its live status. Confirm the channel is verified and eligible for live streaming before planning a continuous broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says restrictions in the preceding 90 days can affect eligibility.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream. Choose the encoder workflow rather than a webcam workflow. Enter the title, description, visibility, audience designation, and other details that apply to your channel and stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. FFmpeg needs the ingest destination and the key. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in a public script, repository, screenshot, or support post. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in Studio and update your encoder.
- Keep Studio’s Live Control Room open for setup. Use its preview and stream-health indicators to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed before you rely on it being public.
Set FFmpeg output to YouTube’s ingest recommendations
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. For RTMP or RTMPS ingest, its encoder guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Higher resolution is not automatically better for this use. Balance resolution and frame rate against the visual material, the host’s encoding capacity, and sustained upload bandwidth. YouTube’s guidance recommends 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. A speed test is only a snapshot; use the Live Control Room’s stream-health information during a real test.
Build the Ubuntu and FFmpeg workflow
First inspect the media rather than assuming every file has the same duration, frame rate, audio layout, or codec. Decide whether the broadcast should repeat one file, play a sequence, or follow a playlist. Your FFmpeg input and looping approach depends on that layout, and audio/video synchronization needs to be checked with the actual files.
- Prepare and validate the media. Confirm each video plays from beginning to end, has usable audio, and can be streamed with the chosen output settings. Ensure the host has enough storage for the source files and any local recording.
- Choose how the content repeats. Decide whether to loop a single prepared video or cycle through a defined sequence. If you want scheduled transitions, determine how gaps, mismatched durations, and differing audio tracks will be handled. Do not assume a playlist assembled from varied media will loop cleanly without testing.
- Configure FFmpeg’s output. Set the video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, CBR target, keyframe interval, and YouTube ingest destination. Supply the stream key securely, rather than embedding it in a script that may be readable by other users or exposed in logs.
- Run a private or unlisted test first. Check YouTube Studio’s preview, picture quality, audio levels, synchronization, and stream-health warnings. Let a test run long enough to reveal repeated-file transitions and connection instability.
- Move the workflow into unattended operation only after testing. A process supervisor such as systemd can start a service at boot and restart a process after it exits. Design the service around the actual FFmpeg command, permissions, media paths, and secret handling. A restart policy is not a guarantee: repeated failures can create downtime or a rapid restart loop.
- Monitor the service and recording. Review FFmpeg and system logs, watch for network or encoder errors, and arrange an alert path you will actually check. If recording locally, confirm the output file continues to grow and that disk space remains available.
A public GitHub repository describes an Ubuntu VPS, local media, FFmpeg, YouTube RTMP ingest, and a systemd service as one implementation pattern. It is an example, not official YouTube guidance or proof that a deployment will remain online. The exact command line, service definition, and recovery behavior depend on your installed software and media.

Choose a local Ubuntu machine or a VPS

Neither option is inherently more reliable. Compare what you already own, sustained network capacity, host access, storage, and your ability to respond to failures. Do not treat systemd, a VPS, or YouTube ingest as an uptime guarantee.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived. It also warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. The 12-hour guidance is about archiving and DVR behavior; it does not establish a maximum legal live runtime or guarantee that a continuous event will be saved.

For an archive you control, record locally and verify that the recording is usable. Keep enough disk space, check that the file is still growing during the stream, and make sure audio and video are present. If YouTube’s archive is the only copy, a 24-hour event is a poor choice when a complete replay is essential.

Test and troubleshoot before leaving the stream unattended
Run a practical test with the same host, media, encoder settings, and network path intended for the real broadcast. Check both ends: FFmpeg’s process and logs on Ubuntu, and the preview and stream-health indicators in YouTube Studio.
