The steps for activating a physical EE SIM depend on whether it came with an upgraded phone or replaces a SIM in the same phone. For an upgrade, insert the new SIM and activate it online. For a same-phone replacement, begin online activation with the old SIM still in the phone, then swap in the new one when prompted. EE says full service can take up to 24 hours, though it is usually quicker.
Choose the right activation process

These are separate processes: do not take the old SIM out first when activating a replacement for the same phone. EE’s setup instructions cover physical SIMs; eSIMs use a different process.

Activate a SIM that came with an upgraded device
- Put the new SIM into the upgraded phone.
- Complete the SIM activation online through EE.
- Keep the phone switched on and wait for signal bars and the EE network name to appear.
EE says full service can take up to 24 hours, although it is usually available much sooner. Temporary loss of signal or limited service may occur while the change completes.

Activate a replacement SIM in the same phone
- Leave the old SIM in the phone while you start the process.
- Use EE’s online activation flow. Enter the one-time code EE sends and the serial number from the new SIM.
- Once you have started activation, remove the old SIM and insert the new one.
- Wait for signal bars and the EE network name to appear.
EE says this can take up to 24 hours, usually less. It does not send an activation text for this replacement process; look for network updates instead.

If the SIM is lost, stolen or damaged
EE says a replacement SIM for a lost, stolen or damaged card should already be active and ready to use. If it is not working, call 150 from an EE phone or 07973 100 150 from any phone. You can arrange a replacement by contacting EE or visiting an EE store.
If you are bringing your number to EE
Number transfer is separate from activating a replacement SIM in the same phone. EE says a new SIM is pre-activated in most cases; if yours is not, follow the instructions in its SIM pack. To request a number transfer, use EE’s online form or text PORT to 150 from your EE phone. Save your contacts before the transfer; the steps for doing so vary by device.

EE’s current number-transfer guidance says a request submitted before 6 pm is scheduled for the next working day. A request made after 6 pm, on a weekend or bank holiday takes two working days, and EE does not transfer numbers on bank holidays. A request close to the 6 pm cut-off may not leave enough processing time for the next working day.
Pay As You Go: when a plan starts
For a 30-day EE Pay As You Go plan, EE’s pre-service information says the plan starts after you have set up direct card payments or topped up enough, inserted the SIM, and made a first call, sent a text or used data. This describes the start of the paid plan, not the activation steps for a replacement SIM.

EE’s May 2026 pre-service information also says the service needs a connection action at least once every 180 days. Examples include topping up, using data, making a chargeable call or sending a chargeable text. EE says a SIM can be disconnected if that does not happen, with the number and remaining credit lost. Check the current terms for your plan, as they may change.
Troubleshoot a SIM that is not working
- Switch the phone off and on again.
- Check that the SIM is inserted correctly; insertion instructions depend on the device.
- Wipe the SIM gently with a lint-free cloth to remove dust.
- If you entered the PIN incorrectly too many times, obtain a PUK code.
- If the SIM is in a new phone, check whether the phone is locked to another network. If it is, contact the previous supplier for an unlock code.
- If these checks do not help, contact EE about support or a replacement SIM.
Refresh iMessage on an Apple device
After activation, iMessage may need to be refreshed so it is linked to the correct number. Open Settings > Messages, turn iMessage off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it on again. Check Settings > Phone > My Number and correct the number if needed.

eSIM setup is different
Do not follow the physical SIM steps for an eSIM. EE provides a separate eSIM setup process with app, QR-code and device setup options. EE says you can dial *#06# and look for an EID to check whether your device is eSIM-compatible.
