The right way to access an old iTunes library depends on what is missing: iTunes Store purchases, music files saved on a computer or backup, or music stored through Apple’s cloud library services. First protect any files you still have, then use the recovery route that matches the music.
Before you change anything, protect the library you still have
Copy any existing iTunes library files and music files to a separate backup before changing Sync Library settings or using iTunes Match. Apple advises backing up a music collection before making those changes. A backup drive can preserve files you copy to it, but it cannot recover music that was never saved there.

Then sort the missing tracks into three groups: iTunes Store purchases, files that exist on a computer or backup, and music you expected to appear through Apple’s cloud library. Some tracks may fit more than one group.
Redownload eligible iTunes Store purchases on Windows
- Open Apple Music or iTunes on the Windows PC and sign in with the Apple Account used to buy the music.
- Authorize the computer for that account if prompted or required by the app.
- Open the Purchased section and look for the tracks or albums to download.
- If an item is absent, check that you are using the purchasing account, look for hidden purchases, and check whether the item is already in your library.
Redownloading is limited to eligible purchases. Apple notes that a past purchase may no longer be available if it has been removed from the iTunes Store or is unavailable in a particular country or region. A purchase in account history is not a guarantee that it can still be downloaded.
Re-add music files you still have
If the original audio files are on a PC or separate backup, add them to the music app’s library. Apple’s Windows guidance documents adding files already on a PC to iTunes; for items added to iTunes, the default media folder is MusiciTunesiTunes Media. The files might also be in another folder or on a backup drive.
Adding audio files can restore access to the music, but it does not by itself restore a lost iTunes library database, playlists, ratings, or other organization. If you have a backup containing the original library files as well as the audio, preserve it before trying to rebuild or replace anything.

Use Sync Library for access across devices
Sync Library makes a music library available on signed-in devices when you have an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, use the same Apple Account on each device, and enable Sync Library. The menus and steps differ by platform and app version, so follow the instructions for the device you are setting up.

Capacity and matched-track quality
Apple’s Mac user guide states a Sync Library limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding music and music videos purchased from the iTunes Store, with files no larger than 200 MB. The same guide says matched songs are provided as DRM-free AAC at 256 kbps (“iTunes Plus” quality), while other songs remain at their original quality. These are Apple’s stated service limits and behavior, not a guarantee that every track will match or remain available in every region.
Transfer Store purchases from a connected device
If the music is still on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod and consists of iTunes Store purchases, Apple documents transferring purchases from the connected device to an authorized PC using its Windows iTunes workflow. This documented route applies to Store purchases; it should not be treated as a general way to extract every locally synced audio file from a device.

Choose the route that fits your music
| Music you are trying to recover | What to try | What it requires or restores |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible iTunes Store purchases | Find and redownload them from Purchased. | The Apple Account used to buy them, an authorized Windows PC, and continued Store availability in your country or region. |
| Audio files already on a PC or backup | Add the files to the music app’s library. | Access to the original files; adding them does not itself restore playlists or the old library database. |
| A library needed on multiple devices | Enable Sync Library. | An Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription, Sync Library enabled, and the same Apple Account on each device. |
| iTunes Store purchases still on a connected iPhone, iPad, or iPod | Use Apple’s transfer-purchases workflow for an authorized Windows PC. | The documented transfer applies to Store purchases, not all locally synced audio. |
When the old library organization is missing
Recovering audio and recovering the library’s organization are different tasks. If you can locate the files, you may be able to add them again, but that alone does not establish a way to restore playlists, ratings, or other database information. Recovery depends on the platform, the library version, and whether a suitable backup exists. Keep any surviving library and media files untouched until you know which backup or copy you intend to use.
