VR gaming works through several distinct paths: a standalone headset can run games without a computer, a PC VR setup depends on a compatible computer, and PlayStation VR2 can also connect to a Windows PC using Sony’s adapter. Our VR gaming coverage helps you tell those options apart, check which platforms a game supports, and understand what a review or specification can—and cannot—tell you before you buy.
What should VR gaming coverage help you decide?
News, reviews and guides answer different questions. News tracks releases and platform changes; reviews assess specific headsets and games; guides explain setup, compatibility and buying trade-offs. The useful common thread is platform clarity: a game may be native to a headset, available through a PC storefront, or playable only by streaming from a computer. Those are not interchangeable requirements.

Release coverage should identify the platform and release state rather than treating “VR” as a single storefront. For example, UploadVR’s July 2026 roundup separates releases across Quest, PC VR and PlayStation VR2, among other XR platforms. That calendar is a dated example, not a live list of what is available today.

Do you need a PC for VR gaming?
Standalone Quest play
Meta describes its VR devices as standalone: a PC is not required to use them. A standalone game runs on the headset, so check that the title is available for the headset’s own platform before buying. Meta’s quick-start information explains the standalone path.

Quest connected to a PC
Quest Link and Air Link let supported Quest devices connect to PC VR. This opens a PC-based play path, but it does not turn every Quest game into a PC game or guarantee that every PC VR title is compatible with a given setup. Meta lists both Link cable and Air Link support in its device comparison. A cable is optional if using Air Link; Meta’s Unity development recommendation for a USB-C cable with throughput of 5 GB/s or higher applies to development, not as a universal consumer requirement.
PlayStation VR2 on PS5 or Windows PC
PS VR2 is designed for PS5 use and can also connect to a Windows PC for SteamVR through Sony’s PC adapter route. Sony specifies a Windows 10 or 11 64-bit PC, the PS VR2 PC adapter, DisplayPort 1.4, USB, and both the PlayStation VR2 and SteamVR software. Sony’s adapter announcement and setup details explain the requirements and feature limitations relative to PS5 use. PC performance varies with the computer configuration; meeting the connection requirements does not mean every SteamVR game will behave identically.

How do Quest 3 and Quest 3S compare on paper?
Meta’s comparison page, updated September 18, 2026, lists both as all-in-one headsets with LCD panels, Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2, 8 GB of onboard memory and a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. The listed per-eye resolution and horizontal field of view differ:

A spec sheet cannot tell you how a headset fits your face, whether its image feels clear to you, or how comfortable it is during a long session.

How should you choose a VR headset for gaming?
Start with the hardware you already own and the games you want to play. Then compare products on the factors that affect your actual setup, not just their headline specifications:
- Platform and existing hardware: establish whether you want standalone play, PC VR, PS5 play or more than one path, and check compatibility for the specific headset and game.
- Game library and storefront: confirm the game is sold for the platform you intend to use. A PC VR listing requires a suitable PC connection; it is not the same as a native headset version.
- Display and optics: compare per-eye resolution, field of view, refresh rate and IPD adjustment. Specifications help identify differences but do not replace trying the fit or judging image quality.
- Tracking and input: check how the headset tracks movement and which controllers or other inputs the game expects.
- Passthrough and mixed reality: consider these features if you want to see your surroundings or use mixed-reality experiences; they are separate from a headset’s ability to run a conventional VR game.
- Room, connection and ongoing use: account for tracking space, wired or wireless PC connection, battery needs and how the headset feels over time.
- Total setup cost: include any required computer, console, adapter or connection hardware. Current regional prices and stock should be checked with local retailers or manufacturers because they are not established by the specifications above.
What should a useful VR game review tell you?
A review should name the headset and storefront used, whether the game ran natively or streamed from a PC, and any relevant connection or hardware conditions. Without that context, “it runs well” or “it looks sharp” is difficult to apply to another player’s setup.

For the game itself, look for its supported platforms, release state, controls and play mode. Comfort and motion intensity are especially personal: a review can describe what its reviewer experienced, but should not present that experience as a guarantee for every player. Cross-buy and cross-play should be stated only when verified for the specific game and platforms.
