To access the state of a browser that is already running, connect to its browser WebSocket endpoint with puppeteer.connect({ browserWSEndpoint }), then list its pages or browser contexts. If by “session” you mean a Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) session attached to one page, use page.createCDPSession() instead. These are different operations.
Connect to the running browser
Use the browser’s own WebSocket endpoint—not a page URL or a made-up endpoint. The example below shows the endpoint’s shape; replace it with the value supplied by the browser you want to attach to. Puppeteer’s Browser.wsEndpoint() API documentation describes the endpoint format and is labeled version 25.12.0.

List every open page
await browser.pages() returns the open pages across browser contexts. Inspect each page’s URL, or select the page your task needs. The Browser API documents browser-level access to pages and contexts.

Inspect a particular context
browser.browserContexts() returns the browser’s contexts. For the pages in one context, call await context.pages(). To access the default context specifically, use browser.defaultBrowserContext().

If a page is missing the expected login state, first check that you selected the context containing the relevant page. A separate context does not share that state. A page opened with window.open belongs to its parent page’s context. See the BrowserContext API.

Browser connection versus a page-level CDP session
Use puppeteer.connect() when you need Puppeteer to attach to a running browser and access its pages or contexts. Use page.createCDPSession() when you need a Chrome DevTools Protocol connection attached to a specific page. Creating a CDP session does not retrieve the browser’s existing pages or restore login state.

For an existing browser you want to preserve, use disconnect(), not close(). Puppeteer explains the lifecycle difference in its browser management guide and Browser API.
Troubleshoot connection and session problems
- Connection fails immediately: verify that the browser is still running and that the WebSocket endpoint is the one it supplied. A page URL or a guessed browser ID is not a substitute for the browser endpoint.
- The endpoint format looks right but does not connect: check the browser’s
http://HOST:PORT/json/versionresponse forwebSocketDebuggerUrl, then use that browser-specific endpoint. browser.pages()does not show the page you expected: inspectbrowser.browserContexts()and callcontext.pages()for each context. The page may belong to a different context.- The page is open but appears logged out: check context selection. Cookies and local storage are isolated between browser contexts.
- The browser disappears when the script ends: check that cleanup calls
browser.disconnect(), notbrowser.close(). - You need CDP commands, not a page list: select the target page first, then create a CDP session with
page.createCDPSession().
