You can access military email from a personal computer only through the remote-access method approved for your account and organization. Depending on the system, that may mean a CAC-enabled webmail portal or an authorized managed route such as Army Enterprise Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). Confirm the current method with your unit IT staff or service help desk before relying on an old webmail link.
Start by identifying your email system and approved access route
DoD, service, and unit email environments do not necessarily use the same portal or remote-access policy. First confirm which email system hosts your account and whether your organization authorizes access from a personal computer. Ask unit IT or the relevant service help desk for the current endpoint, setup instructions, and any eligibility or enrollment requirements.

A directory of CAC-enabled webmail links can be a reference, but it is not the authority for your account. Portal addresses and access policies can change as organizations migrate services.
What you may need for CAC-enabled webmail
- A valid Common Access Card (CAC) and an email account on the relevant network.
- A compatible CAC reader if your computer does not already have one.
- The CAC software, certificates, and configuration required by your organization.
- The correct organization-approved webmail portal and instructions on which certificate to select.
A USB CAC smart card reader addresses only the hardware requirement. It does not provide an email account, grant authorization, automatically install every required certificate, or bypass access restrictions. Check compatibility and current setup instructions before buying a reader; no specific model is established here as government-approved.

Army 365: use an authorized remote-access route
Army 365 is not generally available through direct commercial-internet access to its webmail. In an announcement published May 8, 2024, the Army said that, effective June 10, 2024, it would block access to Army 365 services—including webmail, Teams, SharePoint Online, and OneDrive—through insecure commercial internet channels. The Army directed users toward secure alternatives such as Army Enterprise AVD and Hypori.
Army Enterprise AVD
Army setup instructions describe onboarding and access to AVD using Army 365 credentials and CAC authentication from home or other commercial networks on personal devices. Follow the current Army onboarding and eligibility process, including any access-package and unit instructions. A personal computer should not be treated as a direct connection to the Army network or as permission to open Army 365 webmail outside the authorized route.

Hypori and other managed options
Hypori is another alternative named in the Army announcement. Its availability, and that of any other managed route, depends on organizational authorization and enrollment. Confirm that the method is approved for your account before setting it up.

These routes are not interchangeable consumer email apps. Confirm account eligibility, device support, CAC requirements, and organizational approval for the specific method you plan to use.

Troubleshoot by separating computer setup from account access
The CAC is not detected
Check that the reader is connected and that the CAC is inserted correctly. Then follow your organization’s current reader, driver, software, and certificate instructions. If the computer still does not detect the card, contact unit IT or the relevant help desk rather than installing unverified configuration changes.
CAC authentication works, but the mailbox does not open
Contact the email account’s help desk. Successful CAC authentication does not establish that the mailbox is provisioned, that your account is allowed remote access, or that the endpoint is still current. Account provisioning, policy restrictions, and service migration are separate from local reader setup.

An old bookmark or email address no longer works
Ask your organization for the current portal or managed-access instructions. In particular, Army Google Workspace materials are historical: the Army announced that those accounts would be decommissioned on February 28, 2025. Do not assume a legacy address or webmail bookmark remains a supported route.
