What the Docker–noVNC–Caddy stack does
A desktop application normally draws to an X11 or Wayland display that is local to the machine. A VNC server captures that display and exposes it as a remote framebuffer. Traditional VNC clients speak a TCP protocol, which browsers do not understand directly. noVNC supplies the browser client, while websockify bridges browser WebSockets to the VNC TCP socket. Caddy provides the public HTTPS address and reverse proxy.
The traffic path is:
- The GUI process renders inside a container desktop session.
- TigerVNC (or another VNC server) listens on the container’s private VNC interface.
- websockify accepts WebSocket connections and forwards them to the VNC listener.
- noVNC serves the HTML, JavaScript and CSS client that runs in a modern browser.
- Caddy terminates TLS for your hostname and proxies the HTTP and WebSocket requests to noVNC.
Official noVNC deployment guidance describes the basic arrangement as serving the noVNC files from a web server and configuring a WebSocket proxy to the VNC server. noVNC is both an HTML VNC client JavaScript library and an application built on that library.

Components and their responsibilities
| Component | Job | Where it should listen |
|---|---|---|
| GUI application | Runs the graphical workload. | Inside the application container’s desktop session. |
| Lightweight desktop or window manager | Provides panels, windows and a display for the application. | Inside the same container as the GUI, unless you deliberately split the desktop. |
| TigerVNC or another VNC server | Captures the display and accepts VNC protocol connections. | Private Docker network; do not publish publicly. |
| websockify | Converts browser WebSocket traffic into a TCP connection to the VNC server. | Private network beside noVNC, with one HTTP/WebSocket listening port. |
| noVNC | Delivers the browser-based VNC client. | The gateway port that Caddy proxies. |
| Caddy | Obtains and renews HTTPS certificates, then reverse-proxies requests. | On the host or as a container attached to the same Docker network. |
A prebuilt noVNC container can be convenient, but inspect its base image, startup command, update cadence and default authentication behavior before using it. The exact image tags and package names in older tutorials may no longer match current distributions.
Choose an exposure and proxy layout
Host Caddy with a published gateway port
Run Caddy directly on the host and publish only noVNC’s listening port to the loopback interface. Caddy then proxies to 127.0.0.1:6080. This is straightforward when Caddy already manages other host services.
Caddy in Docker
Attach Caddy and the noVNC service to the same user-defined network. Caddy can proxy to the Docker service name, such as novnc:6080, without publishing noVNC to the host at all. This reduces the host’s exposed surface and keeps service discovery inside Docker.
Private access through a VPN or identity-aware proxy
For an internal tool, keep Caddy reachable only through a VPN or an identity-aware access layer. This avoids making a browser-based desktop discoverable on the public internet while retaining HTTPS and centralized access control.
Public HTTPS with application authentication
If users must connect from arbitrary networks, expose only Caddy, enforce authentication before the noVNC page, and monitor logins. A publicly reachable URL should never be treated as a secret; use strong credentials or an identity provider and remove unused accounts.

| Proxy placement | Caddy and noVNC on one Docker network | Host Caddy to a loopback-published port | Container placement needs network and volume configuration; host placement needs port management. |
| Access model | VPN or identity-aware proxy | Public HTTPS with authentication | Private access adds client setup; public access requires continuous hardening. |
| Desktop | Minimal window manager | Full desktop environment | Minimal sessions use fewer resources but may lack expected tools and integrations. |
Prerequisites to check first
- A Linux host with a current Docker Engine and Compose implementation.
- A container image that includes the GUI application, a desktop or window manager, and a VNC server, or a Dockerfile that installs those pieces.
- A DNS name pointing to the host if Caddy will obtain a public certificate.
- Firewall rules allowing only the HTTPS listener (normally TCP 443, and optionally TCP 80 for certificate challenges or redirects).
- A plan for persistent application data. Container filesystems are disposable unless you mount a volume.
- A browser with WebSocket support. Current versions of major desktop browsers support the features noVNC requires.
Before production, verify the image’s display number, VNC port, noVNC directory and websockify command. Tutorials published in 2020 are useful implementation references, but image tags, Caddy syntax, browser behavior and base-image packages change.
Build or select the GUI container
Keep the desktop and VNC process predictable
The container must start a display, a desktop session and the GUI application in a known order. Use a process supervisor or an entrypoint script that starts the display server, waits for it, launches the desktop, then starts TigerVNC. If the VNC server starts before the display exists, clients may connect to a blank or immediately closing session.
Use a non-root desktop account where the image permits it. Set a VNC password through a secret or protected environment mechanism rather than committing it to a Dockerfile or Compose file. Disable features you do not need, such as clipboard or file transfer, when the VNC implementation allows that choice.
Display and port conventions
Many TigerVNC configurations map display :1 to TCP port 5901. Many noVNC/websockify images listen on HTTP port 6080. These are conventions, not guarantees: inspect the image documentation and make the VNC and gateway ports explicit in your own configuration.
Persist what matters
Mount a volume for application profiles, downloaded files or configuration that users must retain. Do not mount the host’s entire filesystem into the desktop container. Limit mounts to the directories the application actually needs and use read-only mounts for reference data.

Connect noVNC and websockify on a private network
Create a user-defined network so the gateway resolves the VNC service by name. Docker’s -p or --publish option forwards a container port to the host or local network; publishing can be restricted to a particular host interface. Use that capability to publish noVNC only where Caddy can reach it.
Illustrative Docker commands
The following pattern uses shell variables so you can substitute the image and service names verified for your deployment:
docker network create gui-net
docker run -d --name gui --network gui-net
--shm-size=1g
-p 127.0.0.1:5901:5901
${GUI_IMAGE}
docker run -d --name novnc --network gui-net
-p 127.0.0.1:6080:6080
${NOVNC_IMAGE}
websockify --web /usr/share/novnc 6080 gui:5901
In a stricter layout, do not publish port 5901 at all. Let the gateway reach gui:5901 over gui-net, and publish only the gateway port for host-based Caddy. If your image starts websockify automatically, pass its equivalent target and web-root settings instead of starting a second process.
Verify the private connection before adding TLS
- Check that both containers are running with
docker ps. - Inspect startup output with
docker logs guianddocker logs novnc. - From the gateway container, confirm that the VNC service name resolves and the target port is reachable.
- Open the gateway locally, for example at
http://127.0.0.1:6080/vnc.html, and confirm that the desktop appears. - Only after the local path works, add Caddy and public DNS.
A local failure is easier to diagnose than a failure hidden behind TLS, DNS and an authentication layer.
Configure Caddy as the HTTPS and WebSocket proxy

remote.example.com {
reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:6080
}
Caddy’s reverse proxy handles HTTP requests and WebSocket upgrade requests through the same route. You normally do not need a separate WebSocket directive. Replace the hostname with a DNS name you control, and ensure the host’s firewall permits Caddy’s HTTPS listener.
Caddy in Docker
When Caddy shares the Docker network with noVNC, target the service name instead:
remote.example.com {
reverse_proxy novnc:6080
}
Expose only Caddy’s ports to the host. The noVNC service can use expose for documentation and internal connectivity without a host port mapping. Persist Caddy’s data directory so certificate state survives container replacement.
Certificate and DNS checks
- Create the DNS record for the hostname and wait for it to resolve to the correct public address.
- Allow inbound HTTPS to the Caddy host. If your chosen certificate flow requires it, allow HTTP temporarily for the challenge or redirect.
- Start Caddy and inspect its logs for certificate issuance and upstream connection errors.
- Browse to the HTTPS hostname and use the noVNC page’s connect control.
Caddy can provide encryption, but encryption alone is not authorization. Add Caddy authentication, an identity-aware access layer, or a VPN appropriate to the users and risk of the application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Authenticate and limit what the remote desktop can do
Put authentication in front of noVNC
Require authentication at Caddy or an upstream identity layer before serving the noVNC interface. If you use Caddy’s built-in authentication, store only a generated password hash in the configuration and protect the Caddyfile. For teams, an identity provider usually gives better account lifecycle, multi-factor authentication and audit logs than a shared password.
Best Value
Reduce network exposure
- Do not publish the VNC port on
0.0.0.0unless a specific, protected network requires it. - Bind host mappings to
127.0.0.1when Caddy is on the same host. - Use a dedicated Docker network and avoid attaching unrelated containers to it.
- Keep the GUI container’s outbound access limited when the application does not need the internet.
- Update the operating system, browser client files, VNC server and container images on a maintenance schedule.
Protect the session itself
Set an idle timeout where possible, lock the desktop when unattended, and avoid placing secrets in the remote clipboard. If the application handles confidential data, disable clipboard, drive mapping or file-transfer features unless users genuinely need them. Record authentication and Caddy access logs, but avoid logging passwords or sensitive application content.
Tune quality for bandwidth and latency
A remote framebuffer sends changed screen regions rather than a normal web page. Large displays, video, animated dashboards and frequent cursor movement consume more bandwidth and can feel delayed on high-latency links. Start with a modest display size and increase it only after confirming responsiveness.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Lower the desktop resolution for mobile or constrained connections.
- Prefer a lightweight window manager for a single application.
- Use the VNC server’s compression and quality controls when available; test the visual effect rather than assuming a preset is best.
- Limit animated backgrounds, transparency and unnecessary desktop effects.
- Keep the browser tab in the foreground during testing; background-tab throttling can make responsiveness appear worse.
There is no universal bandwidth or frame-rate figure for this arrangement. The application, display size, compression settings and client network determine the result, so measure with the real workload and network conditions.
Common failures and precise fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser shows a blank page | noVNC files are not being served or the URL path is wrong. | Check the gateway’s web root and try its documented page, commonly /vnc.html. Review gateway logs. |
| Page loads but cannot connect | websockify cannot reach the VNC service, or the target port is wrong. | Confirm the Docker network, service name, display-to-port mapping and websockify target. |
| WebSocket error in browser tools | Caddy is pointing at the wrong upstream or the gateway is not accepting upgrades. | Verify the reverse_proxy target, inspect Caddy logs and test the gateway directly on the local port. |
| Connection closes immediately | The desktop or VNC process exited, or its password/display setup failed. | Read the GUI container logs, verify the display exists and ensure the startup script waits for the desktop before launching VNC. |
| HTTPS certificate is not issued | DNS does not point to the host or the required firewall path is blocked. | Resolve the hostname externally, check ports 80/443 as required by the certificate flow, and read Caddy’s certificate logs. |
| Desktop is extremely slow | Display effects, high resolution or a congested link. | Reduce resolution and effects, adjust VNC compression, and test latency from the actual client network. |
| Changes disappear after restart | Important files live only in the container’s writable layer. | Add a narrowly scoped persistent volume and confirm ownership for the desktop user. |
| Users reach the VNC port directly | The VNC port was published broadly. | Remove the public mapping, bind it to loopback or use only the internal Docker network, then rotate credentials if exposure occurred. |
Operations checklist for a production deployment
- Pin and regularly review image versions rather than relying on an untracked latest tag.
- Document the display number, VNC port, gateway port, Docker networks and mounted volumes.
- Keep the raw VNC listener private and expose only Caddy.
- Require authentication before the noVNC page and enable multi-factor authentication through your identity layer when available.
- Persist Caddy certificate data and GUI application data in separate, backed-up volumes.
- Use health checks or monitoring for the GUI, gateway and Caddy processes.
- Test a full restore: recreate containers, restore volumes and verify that a browser can connect.
- Review Caddy and authentication logs for unexpected countries, repeated failures and unusual session duration.
- Re-test after upgrades because browser WebSocket behavior, base packages, image entrypoints and Caddy configuration can change.
When to choose a different design
noVNC and websockify are a good fit when users need a browser-only client and the VNC server exposes only a TCP socket. If your VNC server has reliable native WebSocket support, you may remove websockify and point noVNC at that implementation, reducing one process but adding a dependency on that server’s WebSocket configuration.
A full desktop is appropriate when users need several integrated applications, system settings or accessibility tools. For a single GUI program, a minimal window manager reduces memory use and visual traffic. If users need file synchronization, collaborative editing or high-frame-rate video, a purpose-built remote-application or streaming protocol may provide a better experience than a framebuffer-oriented VNC session.
End-to-end verification sequence
- Launch the GUI container and confirm the application opens in its desktop display.
- Connect from a test client directly to the private gateway, not the public hostname.
- Confirm that the noVNC page loads and that a WebSocket connection remains open after authentication.
- Configure Caddy and verify HTTPS certificate issuance.
- Test the public hostname from a network outside the server’s LAN.
- Attempt to reach the VNC port from that external network; it should be blocked.
- Exercise the real workload, including keyboard shortcuts, clipboard policy and file access, then adjust display and compression settings.
This sequence isolates application, VNC, gateway, proxy, DNS and firewall problems instead of treating every failure as a browser issue.
