You can borrow ebooks and audiobooks at no charge through many public libraries with a library card and the library’s digital-borrowing service. Start at your library’s official website to see which apps and services it supports; if it uses OverDrive, Libby is a straightforward way to find, borrow, read, and listen to titles.
Start with your library’s digital collection
Visit your public library’s official website and look for “ebooks,” “digital library,” or “audiobooks.” The library’s site is the best place to confirm which borrowing services it offers, how to qualify for a card, and how to use its collection. Not every library uses the same platform.

Libby connects readers with libraries that use OverDrive. If your library participates, you can find it in Libby or visit libbyapp.com. Some libraries also offer an OverDrive website for borrowing in a browser or transferring books to a supported ereader. Follow your library’s device instructions.
What you need to borrow
You need a library card for each library you want to borrow from. Add the card in Libby and sign in with the credentials your library requires. Card application methods and eligibility rules vary by library. Some libraries let patrons apply through Libby using a phone number, but that option is not available everywhere. See Libby’s guidance on library cards or ask your library how to get a card.

Borrow a title or place a hold
- Find your library: In Libby, follow the prompt to search for and select your library, then add your library card. You can add more than one library card.
- Browse or search: Look for the ebook or audiobook you want in the library’s digital collection.
- Borrow or place a hold: If the title is available, borrow it. If it is checked out, place a hold and wait for the library or service to notify you when it is ready.
- Check your loans: Open the Shelf in Libby to see borrowed titles, holds, and due dates.
Availability, lending limits, and loan periods depend on the library and its catalog. If a title is not in the collection, check for a “Notify Me” option. Participating libraries may use it to record interest and notify patrons if they add that title. If you do not see the option, ask staff about other possibilities, such as interlibrary services.
Read ebooks and listen to audiobooks
Libby supports both ebooks and digital audiobooks. Open an ebook in the app to read it, or open an audiobook to listen. The Libby mobile app downloads loans over Wi-Fi by default, so you can read or listen offline after the download. You can also stream when you have an internet connection. See Libby’s getting-started instructions for app and borrowing details.

Can you read library ebooks on a Kindle?
For most U.S. library ebooks borrowed through OverDrive, Libby offers a Kindle delivery option when the title is eligible. The option is limited to U.S. libraries and schools; it is not a universal feature for every country or every ebook. You do not need a Kindle to use Libby: you can read in the Libby app or supported browser instead. Check OverDrive’s Kindle Books guidance and the individual title’s options.

If your library does not use Libby
Check the library website for its recommended app or digital catalog. Some public libraries also offer Hoopla, a separate service with ebooks and audiobooks that requires participation by the library and a qualifying library card. It is only an option if your library provides it. Details are available from Hoopla.
If you are unsure which service to use, ask library staff. They can confirm your card eligibility, supported devices, loan rules, and whether the title is available through another service.
