1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe safest default is a VPN: connect your phone or laptop to your home network, then open the gallery as if you were at home. A private mesh VPN can do the same without a conventional inbound VPN port. If you need a normal public URL, put the gallery behind an HTTPS reverse proxy or an outbound tunnel, but treat the web interface and API as internet-facing and secure the application accordingly. For Immich, never forward its default port 2283 directly to the internet without additional configuration.
Choose the access method before changing your router
Remote access is not one feature. It is a decision about who can reach the gallery, what software each device must run, and which part of your home network becomes reachable from the internet. The right design depends on whether you control the client devices, whether you need a conventional URL, and whether you regularly upload large videos while away.

| Method | Who can reach the gallery | Extra client software | Inbound router port | Complexity | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional VPN (WireGuard or OpenVPN) | Devices authenticated to your home VPN | VPN client on every device | Yes; one VPN port | Moderate | Requires a reachable home connection; dynamic DNS may be needed |
| Private mesh VPN (such as Tailscale) | Devices signed in to the same private network | Mesh client on every device | Normally no manually forwarded home port | Low to moderate | Both the server and remote device need the client |
| HTTPS reverse proxy | Anyone who can resolve and authenticate to the public URL | None for a browser; app uses the URL | Usually 80/443 to the proxy | High | Web UI and API can be exposed to the public internet |
| Cloudflare Tunnel | Anyone allowed by the published hostname and access controls | None for normal web access | No inbound origin port | Moderate to high | Immich’s FAQ reports a 100 MB maximum file size that cannot be changed; verify the current limit |
For a private personal library, start with a conventional VPN or a private mesh VPN. Use a reverse proxy or tunnel when the convenience of a normal URL outweighs the larger exposure and configuration burden.
What “secure remote access” must protect
Encryption is only one layer. HTTPS or a VPN can protect traffic in transit, but neither automatically decides which users may view albums, call the API, or upload media. A public reverse proxy creates an internet-facing route even when the gallery itself still requires a login.

- Transport confidentiality: traffic between the device and home service must be encrypted.
- Authentication: only your accounts and approved devices should be able to use the gallery.
- Network scope: a VPN should expose only the necessary home service, not every device on your LAN.
- Application security: keep the gallery, proxy, operating system, and VPN software updated.
- Operational recovery: maintain backups and a way to revoke a lost phone, laptop, or session.
Immich’s own remote-access guidance warns that public exposure may reach both its web interface and API. Therefore, adding a certificate does not turn a public deployment into a private one.
Option 1: connect through a conventional home VPN
WireGuard and OpenVPN are the straightforward private-network choices named in Immich’s documentation. A VPN server runs at home; your phone or laptop runs the matching client and receives a VPN address. Once connected, the gallery is reached using its private home address, just as it is on your Wi-Fi.

- A VPN server running on your router, a home server, or another always-on device.
- A VPN client for every remote phone or computer.
- One router port forwarded to the VPN server, using the protocol and port you configure.
- A stable way to find home when the public address changes. Dynamic DNS is useful if your internet provider does not give you a static IP.
- A firewall rule that permits the VPN port but does not expose the gallery’s application port directly.
Setup sequence
- Install the VPN server. Use your router’s built-in WireGuard/OpenVPN server or install the server package on a supported home host. Generate a separate client profile for each device rather than sharing one profile.
- Choose the VPN address range. Avoid overlapping the network used by the phone on other Wi-Fi networks. A distinct tunnel subnet prevents routing confusion when you travel.
- Forward only the VPN port. Create the router rule to the VPN server’s private address. Do not create a second rule forwarding Immich’s 2283 port to the internet.
- Configure the client profile. Import the profile into the phone or laptop’s VPN app. Set the home VPN endpoint to your static address or dynamic-DNS hostname.
- Limit routes where practical. A full-tunnel profile sends all traffic through home; a split-tunnel profile routes only the home LAN and gallery address. Full tunnel is useful on hostile networks but consumes more home upload bandwidth.
- Connect and test away from home. Disable Wi-Fi on the phone, enable cellular data, connect the VPN, and open the gallery’s private address. Test sign-in, thumbnail loading, full-size downloads, and a small upload.
Advantages and trade-offs
A VPN keeps the gallery off the public web and works with a browser or the Immich mobile app once the app is pointed at the private address. The trade-off is operational: the VPN server and client must be installed and active, and the router must accept the VPN connection. If the home public IP changes, the endpoint must follow it through dynamic DNS or another update mechanism.

Option 2: use a private mesh VPN when you cannot open a traditional VPN port
A mesh VPN such as Tailscale is designed for private connectivity between enrolled devices. Its documentation requires the remote device and the server to be signed in to the same tailnet. The service can often establish the connection without you manually forwarding a conventional VPN port on the home router.
Deployment steps
- Install the mesh client on the machine hosting Immich, or on a home device that can route traffic to the Immich host.
- Install the same client on each phone or laptop that needs access.
- Sign both devices in to the same tailnet and approve them according to your account’s device policy.
- Confirm that the remote device can reach the server’s mesh address. Use the gallery’s normal HTTP or HTTPS port on that private address.
- Enter the mesh address or device name in the Immich app and test while the phone is on cellular data.
This approach is attractive when your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT, when you cannot administer the router, or when you do not want to expose a VPN listener. It still creates a private network that must be managed: remove retired devices, protect the account that controls the tailnet, and avoid advertising more home services than necessary.
Option 3: publish a normal URL through an HTTPS reverse proxy
A reverse proxy terminates HTTPS on a public hostname and forwards approved requests to Immich on the home network. This is the most convenient design for devices on which installing a VPN client is impractical, but it has the broadest exposure. Anyone on the internet can reach the proxy; application authentication and patching become essential.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Prerequisites
- A domain or subdomain that resolves to your home connection (or to an intermediary service that can reach it).
- Port forwarding for the proxy’s public listener, normally HTTPS on 443 and, when required for certificate issuance, HTTP on 80.
- A reverse-proxy server such as the one supported by your operating system or container stack.
- A trusted certificate. Immich recommends a trusted certificate for a publicly accessible deployment; Let’s Encrypt is one documented route.
- Firewall rules that expose the proxy, not Immich’s internal application port.
Immich-specific proxy requirements
Immich’s reverse-proxy guidance requires the proxy to pass the Host, X-Real-IP, X-Forwarded-Proto, and X-Forwarded-For headers. These preserve the original host, client address, and protocol information that the application and its logs use.
Allow request bodies large enough for the media you intend to upload. A proxy limit that is smaller than a video file will produce an upload failure even though the gallery and account are healthy. Set appropriate read and send timeouts as well; mobile uploads over cellular links can take longer than a short browser request.
Serve Immich at the root of a domain or subdomain, such as https://photos.example.net. Immich does not support placing the application under a path such as /immich. If you use Let’s Encrypt’s HTTP-01 challenge, verify that /.well-known/immich routes to Immich as required; an incorrect challenge route can cause mobile-app connections to fail.

Safe rollout procedure
- Create the DNS record and confirm it resolves to the intended public endpoint.
- Install the certificate and configure automatic renewal. Test renewal before relying on the service during travel.
- Configure the proxy upstream to the private Immich service address. Do not point the router directly at port 2283.
- Add the required forwarding headers and set an upload limit larger than your largest planned file.
- Apply a restrictive firewall policy and disable unrelated proxy routes.
- Update the Immich mobile app’s server URL to the HTTPS root hostname. Do not append an
/immichpath. - Test from cellular data: sign in, browse an album, stream a video, download an original, and upload a file near your configured limit.
A self-signed certificate encrypts the connection but causes browser security warnings and may be rejected by clients. For a public URL, use a certificate trusted by the devices that will connect.
Option 4: use an outbound Cloudflare Tunnel
Cloudflare describes its Tunnel as an outbound-only connection from your home origin. Because the origin initiates the connection, you do not need to expose an inbound port or publish your home origin IP in the same way as a direct reverse-proxy setup. You still publish a hostname and must decide who is allowed to use it.
Immich’s FAQ reports a 100 MB maximum file size for Cloudflare Tunnel that cannot be changed. The FAQ page does not state a year for that figure, and service limits can change, so verify the current limit before choosing a tunnel for video-heavy uploads. A 100 MB ceiling may be acceptable for browsing and small phone photos but unsuitable for large originals or long videos.
Best Value
When a tunnel fits
- Your ISP blocks inbound connections or places you behind carrier-grade NAT.
- You need a browser-friendly hostname without installing a VPN client on every device.
- Your normal uploads fit within the current tunnel limit.
- You are prepared to configure access controls and monitor a public application route.
A tunnel changes the network path, not the security responsibility. Keep Immich authentication enabled, restrict the hostname to the people and devices that need it, and keep both the connector and gallery current.
Why direct port forwarding is the wrong shortcut
Immich’s Remote Access documentation states: “Never forward port 2283 directly to the internet without additional configuration.” Port forwarding bypasses the isolation provided by a VPN or carefully configured proxy and makes the application listener a direct target. It also tends to omit TLS, correct forwarding headers, upload controls, and other proxy protections.
If you already created a 2283 forwarding rule, remove it first. Then choose a VPN, mesh VPN, reverse proxy, or tunnel and expose only the endpoint that method requires. Check the router’s active port-forwarding table after saving the change; stale rules are easy to overlook.
Hardening checklist after remote access works
- Use unique, strong passwords and enable every multi-factor option Immich and your access service provide.
- Keep Immich, its database and storage components, the proxy, VPN client/server, and host operating system updated.
- Give each person an individual account; do not share an administrator login.
- Revoke a lost phone or laptop immediately from the VPN, mesh network, or application session list.
- Review access logs for unexpected countries, repeated failures, or unusual upload activity.
- Back up the photo library and the Immich database separately, and periodically test restoring both.
- Restrict administrative interfaces to the home LAN or VPN rather than publishing them through the same hostname.
- Use least-privilege firewall rules: the public endpoint should reach only the gallery upstream it needs.
- Set proxy upload and timeout values deliberately, then test with the largest file you expect to handle.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | Check or fix |
|---|---|---|
| Works on home Wi-Fi but not cellular | VPN is disconnected, DNS resolves only internally, or the router is not forwarding the chosen endpoint | Test with Wi-Fi disabled; verify the VPN session or public DNS record and inspect the router rule |
| Browser opens but the mobile app will not connect | Immich is under a path, certificate is untrusted, or required headers/challenge routing are wrong | Use the domain root, install a trusted certificate, pass the four required headers, and verify /.well-known/immich handling |
| Small uploads succeed; videos fail | Proxy or tunnel body-size limit | Increase the reverse-proxy upload allowance; for Cloudflare Tunnel, compare the file with the reported 100 MB maximum |
| Clients see a certificate warning | Self-signed, expired, or hostname-mismatched certificate | Install a trusted certificate whose name matches the URL and automate renewal |
| VPN connects but the gallery is unreachable | Incorrect route, overlapping subnet, or host firewall block | Check the VPN route table, choose a non-overlapping tunnel subnet, and permit the gallery’s private port from the VPN network |
| Remote access stopped after an ISP change | Public IP changed or inbound access is blocked | Update dynamic DNS, confirm the new WAN address, or move to a mesh VPN/tunnel that does not require an inbound port |
Apply Immich guidance carefully to other gallery software
The port number, API behavior, URL-path support, headers, and upload limits described above are Immich-specific. Another self-hosted gallery may listen on a different port, require different WebSocket or API handling, or document another proxy configuration. Before exposing a different application, read its current remote-access and reverse-proxy documentation and map its own internal port and security requirements.
A practical decision rule
- Choose a conventional VPN when you control the router and want the smallest public attack surface.
- Choose a private mesh VPN when inbound forwarding is unavailable or you want simpler connectivity across changing networks.
- Choose an HTTPS reverse proxy when a normal URL and VPN-free app access are worth maintaining a public endpoint, certificates, headers, and upload limits.
- Choose a Cloudflare Tunnel when inbound ports or a public origin address are problematic and your files fit the current tunnel limit.
Whichever method you select, begin with a private test over cellular data, expose only the required service, and treat every public hostname as an active security boundary rather than merely a shortcut to your home server.
