Choose Immich when phone backup, sharing and a modern gallery are your priorities; choose PhotoPrism when browser-based search, metadata handling, PhotoSync compatibility or WebDAV fit your workflow better. Nextcloud Photos or Memories may be sensible for an existing Nextcloud installation, but the current feature and requirements evidence available here is insufficient to rank it against the other two. Your existing files, backup plan, phone workflow, metadata needs and server capacity matter more than a generic winner.
This guide separates documented capabilities from assumptions. Immich and PhotoPrism publish useful requirements and feature lists; those figures are project guidance, not a head-to-head performance test. Nextcloud’s current Photos/Memories behavior needs verification from its own version-specific documentation before you make a three-way decision.

Do not read this table as a speed ranking. The projects publish different baselines, and actual results depend on library size, file formats, indexing, machine-learning jobs, storage, concurrent users and configuration.
What a self-hosted photo gallery actually does
A self-hosted gallery runs on hardware you control—such as a home server, NAS or virtual machine—and presents your files through a web interface and, where supported, a phone app. The application normally builds a database of filenames, dates, locations, people, labels and thumbnails. That database makes browsing and search fast, but it is not the same thing as your original media.

Before choosing software, distinguish three layers:
- Original media: the camera files and videos you must be able to restore independently.
- Application data: the database, indexes, thumbnails, face embeddings, settings and user records.
- Access and ingestion: how phones upload, how existing folders are indexed, and how users share or download files.
A sound design protects all three. A gallery can be rebuilt from originals, but rebuilding may take substantial time and can lose application-specific edits or sharing state. A database backup without the original photos is therefore incomplete.
Immich: strongest fit for phone-first backup and sharing
Documented strengths
Immich’s feature documentation lists mobile apps that back up photos and videos, multiple users, partner sharing, public links, albums, timeline browsing, faces, maps, tags, RAW viewing and phrase-based Smart Search. It also lists external libraries, folder view, hardware transcoding, XML sidecar support and database backups. Together these features make it a natural shortlist candidate when the phone is the main camera and you want a gallery designed around recent uploads.
Smart Search is described as phrase-based rather than merely a filename filter. Face recognition and timeline, map and album views provide several ways to rediscover older images. Sharing options cover private collaboration with another user as well as public links; configure those deliberately if the server is reachable from the internet.
How Immich handles an existing folder archive
Immich’s external-library mode indexes files that remain outside Immich’s upload storage. After a scan, those files appear in the gallery while the originals stay in their existing filesystem paths. This can avoid a disruptive move of a large archive, but it changes what “editing” means.
- Changes made to the external folder are not automatically reflected until the library is scanned again.
- Metadata edits made inside Immich remain in Immich’s database and are not written back to the original external asset.
- Automatic filesystem watching is documented as experimental and may not work on network drives.
For an archive that must remain authoritative in its folders, treat Immich as an index and viewing layer. Keep a separate process for edits that need to be embedded in EXIF/XMP or otherwise preserved with the file. Run deliberate scans after outside changes rather than assuming the gallery is watching every filesystem event.

Immich’s current requirements page, checked in 2026, lists 6 GB of RAM and two CPU cores as a minimum, with 8 GB of RAM and four CPU cores recommended. It recommends a Unix-compatible filesystem and notes that stable PostgreSQL performance matters. The same page estimates that generated thumbnails and transcoded video can increase library size by 10–20% on average. That is project guidance, not an independent measurement, and a video-heavy or RAW-heavy collection can behave differently.
Plan capacity for originals plus this working overhead, database growth and a separate backup copy. Hardware transcoding can reduce CPU pressure for supported video formats, but it does not remove the need to store generated derivatives.

Immich’s backup boundary
Immich’s documentation gives an unusually direct warning: Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!
Its backup guide says a comprehensive plan includes both the database and copies of uploaded photos and videos. Automatic database backups do not replace an actual backup tool or a media backup.
If you use external libraries, include those original folders in the backup scope as well; an Immich database export cannot recreate files that were never stored in it. Test that you can restore a sample original, database and configuration before trusting the system with irreplaceable images.

PhotoPrism: strongest fit for metadata-centric, browser-based organization
Documented strengths
PhotoPrism describes a progressive web app (PWA) for phones, tablets and desktops. Its feature documentation lists combined search filters, automatic content and location labels, face recognition, EXIF and XMP metadata extraction, Google Photos JSON support, compatible phone-backup apps such as PhotoSync and WebDAV access through desktop clients.
This emphasis suits a collection where embedded metadata and flexible browser search are more important than having a dedicated first-party mobile uploader. A PWA can be installed from a compatible browser, while PhotoSync or another compatible app can handle background phone backup. Verify the app, operating-system permissions and upload behavior you intend to use; “compatible” does not mean every phone and setting behaves identically.
PhotoPrism hardware and storage guidance
PhotoPrism’s setup documentation specifies a 64-bit host with at least two CPU cores and 3 GB of physical RAM, plus at least 4 GB of swap. It says local SSD storage benefits indexing, particularly for the database and cache. RAW files and high-resolution panoramas may require additional swap or memory.
These are PhotoPrism’s published setup recommendations, not a promise of a particular import time or browsing speed. Put the database and cache on fast local storage when possible, while sizing the bulk media volume for originals, derivatives and backups. If your host has little RAM, importing a large RAW collection or running face and label analysis concurrently may require staging the work.

Metadata and file-workflow implications
PhotoPrism’s EXIF/XMP extraction and Google Photos JSON support can help when consolidating exports from other systems. Decide which metadata is authoritative before importing: embedded file metadata, sidecar files or application edits. Keep sidecars with the originals in every backup so a future migration can recover more than the gallery’s internal database.
WebDAV access can make the collection reachable from desktop file clients, but it is an access protocol rather than a backup strategy. Use it to integrate with an existing workflow, then copy originals and application data to an independent backup target.

Nextcloud Photos and Memories: an option, not a verified winner
An existing Nextcloud installation can make Photos or Memories attractive because one platform may already provide user accounts, storage and sharing. However, the official material surfaced for this comparison was the Nextcloud server administration manual and did not explain the current Photos or Memories feature set in enough detail.
Consequently, this guide does not claim that Nextcloud matches or trails Immich or PhotoPrism on:
Recommended Free Tools
- mobile photo and video backup;
- facial recognition or automatic labels;
- search quality and indexing behavior;
- hardware requirements or performance; or
- how application data and originals are backed up.
Before selecting it, check the documentation for your exact Nextcloud and Photos/Memories versions, then perform a small pilot: upload from each phone, search by date and metadata, test sharing, inspect originals and measure storage growth. Treat the result as version-specific rather than assuming that another deployment behaves the same way.
Compare the three by the decision that matters to you
Phone backup
Immich explicitly documents mobile backup of photos and videos. PhotoPrism documents phone backup through compatible apps such as PhotoSync rather than presenting the same first-party mobile workflow in the cited feature list. Nextcloud’s current behavior is not established by the available evidence. If automatic background upload is the deciding requirement, install the intended client and verify permissions, battery behavior, duplicate handling and upload resumption before committing.
Search and organization
Immich lists Smart Search, timeline, albums, faces, map views and tags. PhotoPrism lists combined filters, automatic content and location labels, face recognition and metadata extraction. Those descriptions show different emphases, not which system recognizes more people or returns more accurate results. A pilot using your own filenames, dates, GPS data, RAW files and videos is the only reliable way to choose between them for search.

Immich documents multiple users, partner sharing and public links. If several people will contribute, test account boundaries, album permissions and link revocation. PhotoPrism’s cited feature material establishes browser and WebDAV access but does not provide an equivalent detailed sharing matrix. Do not infer identical permissions from the fact that both systems display a gallery.
Existing files and metadata
Immich can index an external filesystem path, but outside changes require scans and in-gallery metadata edits are not written to the original. PhotoPrism’s documented EXIF/XMP extraction and WebDAV support may align better with a metadata-centered or desktop-oriented workflow. In either case, make a copy of the archive before changing metadata or reorganizing folders.
Hardware, storage and capacity planning
| Project | Published baseline | Storage or configuration note | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immich | 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores minimum; 8 GB RAM and 4 cores recommended (Immich, 2026) | Thumbnails and transcoded video may add 10–20% to library size on average; Unix-compatible filesystem and stable PostgreSQL are recommended. | Plan additional space for derivatives and database data. This is not a benchmark against PhotoPrism. |
| PhotoPrism | 2 CPU cores, 3 GB physical RAM and at least 4 GB swap (PhotoPrism, 2026) | Local SSD benefits the database and cache; RAW files and high-resolution panoramas may need more memory or swap. | Meet the baseline, then allow headroom for indexing and machine-learning workloads. |
| Nextcloud Photos/Memories | Not established in the available official material | Check requirements for the exact server and app versions you plan to run. | Do not substitute either competitor’s figures for a Nextcloud requirement. |
These numbers cannot answer which application is faster. A two-core host with an SSD, modest JPEG library and one user may feel very different from the same CPU running concurrent video transcodes, face recognition and a large RAW archive. Measure import, search and backup behavior on representative data.

Estimate your real storage need
- Measure the current originals directory, including videos and sidecars.
- Add room for thumbnails, previews, transcoded video and database growth. For an Immich estimate, its documentation’s 10–20% average overhead is a starting point, not a guarantee.
- Create a second copy of the originals and application data on an independent device. A backup stored in the same failure domain is not protection from that device failing.
- Reserve free space for temporary indexing and future phone uploads instead of filling the volume to its advertised capacity.
A NAS hard drive or separate photo backup drive can provide the capacity for originals and an independent copy, but choose capacity only after measuring your library and projected growth. Neither project’s published requirements specify a particular drive model.
A practical selection and migration procedure
- Write down non-negotiables. Record whether you need first-party mobile backup, browser-only access, household sharing, external folders, RAW support, WebDAV, face recognition, public links or strict metadata preservation.
- Inventory your archive. Note folder ownership, file formats, sidecars, duplicate files, network mounts and which system currently writes metadata.
- Check the host. Compare RAM, CPU cores, filesystem, swap, SSD availability and database storage with the project’s published guidance. Do not use Immich’s figures as PhotoPrism or Nextcloud requirements.
- Install a pilot. Use a disposable test library containing phone photos, videos, RAW files, edited metadata, sidecars and a few shared albums. Keep originals outside the pilot’s destructive operations.
- Test ingestion. Upload from every phone, import an existing folder, interrupt an upload, rescan after an outside file change and check duplicate handling.
- Test discovery. Search by date, camera metadata, location, labels and people; open RAW and video files; compare the results with your expectations rather than with marketing claims.
- Test sharing and recovery. Create a second user, share an album, revoke a link, download originals and restore a database backup into a test instance.
- Choose the authoritative copy. Decide whether folders, embedded metadata or the application database is the source of truth. Document the rule for everyone who will edit files.
- Migrate in stages. Copy originals first, verify checksums or file counts, then index them. Keep the old archive untouched until browsing, search and restoration have all passed.
Backup design and common failure modes
“The database backup completed, so the photos are safe.”
Not necessarily. Immich explicitly says database backups do not cover the need for media copies. Back up uploaded originals and external-library folders separately, then retain the database backup alongside a documented restore procedure.
“The gallery shows my external files, so edits are permanent.”
In Immich external-library mode, metadata edits made in the application stay in Immich and are not persisted to the original asset. If permanence matters, edit the file or its sidecar with a workflow that writes to the authoritative archive, then rescan.
“The server noticed my folder change immediately.”
Immich documents automatic filesystem watching as experimental and warns it may not work on network drives. Schedule or trigger scans after outside changes, and verify the result before deleting an original.
“The minimum hardware figure guarantees good performance.”
Minimums are starting points. Immich’s 6 GB/2-core baseline and PhotoPrism’s 3 GB/2-core plus swap baseline come from separate project documentation. Indexing, recognition, transcoding, storage latency and concurrent users can require more.
“WebDAV or a public link is a backup.”
They are access or sharing methods. Keep a versioned, independently stored copy of originals and the application data, and perform a restore test at intervals you can sustain.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Immich if…
- Your primary requirement is automatic phone photo and video backup.
- You want documented partner sharing, public links and a gallery-oriented mobile experience.
- You value timeline, map, album, face and Smart Search views.
- You can provide at least its published baseline and budget storage for derivatives.
- You understand that external-library edits and scans have the limitations described above, and you will maintain a separate media backup.
Choose PhotoPrism if…
- You prefer a browser-based PWA across phones, tablets and desktops.
- EXIF/XMP extraction, automatic labels, combined filters and face recognition are central to organization.
- You already use a compatible phone-backup app such as PhotoSync or need WebDAV access from desktop clients.
- You can place the database and cache on local SSD storage and provide swap, with extra headroom for RAW and panorama collections.
Investigate Nextcloud Photos or Memories if…
- You already operate Nextcloud and reducing the number of services is more important than adopting a specialized gallery.
- You are willing to verify the exact app and server versions, test mobile upload, search, sharing, metadata and restore behavior, and accept that the available evidence does not establish a feature ranking.
The responsible choice is the one that passes your pilot and backup restore test. A feature list can narrow the shortlist; your files, phones, host and recovery plan decide the final deployment.
