To accept appointment bookings in WordPress, install a booking plugin, define the services and available hours, then add its booking form or calendar to a page. Before choosing a plugin, decide whether bookings should be confirmed automatically or reviewed first, and whether you need staff schedules, payments, event bookings, or calendar syncing.
Choose the booking workflow before choosing a plugin
Appointment tools do not all handle the same process. Write down what should happen between a visitor selecting a time and the appointment being confirmed:

- Instant booking: the customer selects an available slot and receives a confirmation.
- Request and review: the customer submits an inquiry, and you review it before accepting.
- Quote-first booking: you review the inquiry, send a personalized offer, and let the customer accept or decline before confirmation.
Also decide whether you are scheduling for one provider or a team, whether services have different durations or prices, and whether you need online payments, calendar synchronization, video meetings, or event bookings. These are separate capabilities; do not assume they are included in every plugin or edition.

The WordPress.org appointment booking category also lists LatePoint, Bookly, Booking Calendar, Fluent Booking, and Appointment Hour Booking. Its summaries describe different combinations of appointment or event booking, calendars, reminders, payments, and duration or start-time settings. Use the directory as a shortlist, then confirm the exact workflow and features in the plugin’s current documentation: WordPress.org appointment booking plugins.

Compare tools on solo versus team scheduling, appointments versus events, automatic confirmation versus manual review, payment gateways, calendar and video integrations, customer fields, reminders, language needs, and the features reserved for paid editions. Adoption counts can help indicate that a plugin is in use, but do not establish quality or suitability: as displayed on WordPress.org on October 4, 2026, Amelia had 90,000+ active installations, Bookly 60,000+, Simply Schedule Appointments 50,000+, and LatePoint 100,000+. Those are directory counts, not measures of reliability, customer satisfaction, or booking results.
Set up appointment bookings in WordPress
- Install and activate a plugin. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins > Add New, find the plugin and install it, then activate it. If you have a ZIP from the plugin provider, use Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin. - Create appointment types or services. Add each bookable offering and set its duration, price, capacity, and assigned staff member where your plugin supports those settings and your edition includes them.
- Set working availability. Enter the provider’s working hours and blackout periods. For a team, check staff schedules and assignment rules; for appointments with different durations, verify how each service affects available start times.
- Configure the customer flow. Choose whether appointments are instantly confirmed or require review. Set required customer details, notifications, and any payment options your chosen plugin and edition support.
- Add the booking interface to a page. Use the plugin’s WordPress block, shortcode, or supported page-builder module. For Simply Schedule Appointments, the documented shortcode is
[ssa_booking]. Amelia documents[ameliastepbooking]for step booking,[ameliacatalogbooking]for catalog booking, and an event-list shortcode. Check the plugin’s instructions for the right option and any display settings: Simply Schedule Appointments · Amelia - Test the complete booking path. Open the page as a customer, check that the intended slots appear, submit the required details, and verify the confirmation and provider notifications. If you enabled payment or calendar synchronization, check that part of the workflow too before sharing the page.
Check edition limits and integrations
Free and paid editions can differ substantially. Simply Schedule Appointments lists team booking, Google Calendar sync, payments, SMS, and video meeting integrations among paid-edition features. Amelia’s listing warns that some integrations and features are not included in Lite, although it lists Square among Lite payment integrations. Confirm the current plan and exact gateway, calendar, or integration support before building your process around it.

Likewise, treat notifications, staff schedules, customer fields, and booking policies as requirements to verify—not features to assume. Plugin listings and compatibility details can change, so consult the vendor’s current documentation and edition comparison when making a selection.
