Panther chameleons (*Furcifer pardalis*) change vivid hues by adjusting the spacing between tiny guanine crystals inside specialized skin cells. That alters which wavelengths of light the skin reflects. Pigments also contribute to the final color, so the effect is not simply crystals changing color—or a chameleon matching whatever background it sits on.
How the crystal-based color change works
The crystals sit inside cells called iridophores, beneath the skin’s surface. In the superficial iridophores examined in a 2015 study, guanine nanocrystals formed a close-packed lattice. The crystals are not loose particles being shifted around: the evidence points to changes in the spacing of the lattice.

That spacing changes how the lattice interacts with light and which wavelengths it selectively reflects. In sampled skin, the average spacing was 30% smaller in resting blue or green areas than in excited yellow or white areas, according to the study’s authors. Their measurements and optical modelling showed how a relatively modest structural change could shift reflected light across visible colors.
The researchers also changed the osmolarity around skin samples outside the animal and reproduced a corresponding optical shift. This supports the spacing mechanism, though it does not establish every step by which a living chameleon controls the change.

Why the visible color is not just a crystal effect
Structural color from the iridophores is only part of the result. Pigment cells affect brightness and help determine the colors we see. For example, yellow pigments can combine with reflected blue light to produce green; other pigments influence red patches and overall brightness.
Accordingly, not every change in appearance should be attributed to a change in crystal spacing. The study reported pigment dispersion as another source of brightness changes, including in females and juveniles. The rapid, vivid hue shifts linked to lattice adjustment were especially characteristic of mature males.

When panther chameleons make rapid color shifts
The 2015 study by Teyssier, Saenko, van der Marel and Milinkovitch examined social encounters involving mature males and a male competitor or a potentially receptive female. In those contexts, males could shift background skin from green toward yellow or orange; blue patches could become whitish, and red areas could grow brighter. The observed changes were reversible and occurred within a couple of minutes. The University of Geneva described some vivid changes in these social contexts as taking one to two minutes.

Two iridophore layers have different roles
The study distinguished the superficial iridophores associated with visible color shifts from a deeper layer found across the examined sexes and ages. The deeper layer contains larger, less ordered crystals and did not appear to drive the visible hue changes reported in the experiments.

For the deeper layer, the authors estimated that about 45% of radiation energy in the near-infrared range they measured was screened by reflection. That is a study-specific estimate, not a universal figure for chameleons or for all conditions. The authors said further comparisons were needed to establish how systematic this infrared reflectivity is across species.

What remains unsettled
The cellular and molecular controls that adjust the crystal lattice were not resolved in the 2015 paper. The study established evidence for a physical color mechanism in panther chameleons, but it should not be treated as proof that every chameleon species uses precisely the same process. Its findings show how nanostructure, pigments and social context can work together to produce fast, conspicuous color changes.
