On the product-page assistant TikTok has described, answers draw on information supplied by the merchant. TikTok’s privacy policies cover much broader data processing, but do not say exactly which personal signals shape a particular answer or recommendation.
What TikTok’s Shopping Assistant does
TikTok announced the assistant on October 5, 2026. The company describes it as an AI agent that can follow context and remember preferences within a conversation, then help shoppers evaluate a product or move toward a purchase. TikTok’s examples include asking whether shoes will hold up on granite trails, whether they fit true to size, and which colors are available. These are illustrative prompts from TikTok, not reported search-query data. TechCrunch’s report on the announcement and TikTok For Business’s product explanation describe the feature.

Product questions and merchant information
For the ad-page experience TikTok For Business describes, the assistant appears in a chat window on a product page in TikTok’s in-app browser. TikTok says its AI-powered answers are based on information provided by the merchant. A shopper can then continue to checkout on the merchant’s site within that browser.

It does not establish how TikTok checks whether those details are complete or accurate, or whether the same answer process applies to every Shopping Assistant surface.

What “recommends” does—and does not—mean
The public description supports calling this a conversational shopping guide. It does not disclose the assistant’s model, retrieval method, recommendation formula, or the relative weight of product details and user signals. TikTok also has not publicly mapped specific personal data to a particular assistant answer. So it would go beyond the available documentation to say that the assistant uses your entire TikTok history—or any particular profile detail—to choose a product.
How the assistant differs from TikTok discovery and checkout
Shopping assistance, product discovery, and payment are related parts of shopping but are not the same feature. TikTok’s public descriptions distinguish a product-question chat from both broader discovery and a separate native-checkout option.

What data TikTok says it may process
TikTok’s US Privacy Policy and TikTok Shop Privacy Policy describe categories of information handled across their covered services. They are policy disclosures, not a feature-by-feature list of fields sent to Shopping Assistant.

- AI interactions: TikTok’s US policy includes prompts, questions, files, other information submitted to AI-powered interfaces, and generated responses.
- Shopping and transactions: The US policy describes payment, billing, delivery, contact, and purchase-history information for transactions through shopping features. The Shop policy gives examples such as name and delivery address, payment details, transaction history, product feedback, logistics details, items placed in a cart, and images or inquiries sent in product or order-support messages.
- Usage and browsing: The US policy describes interactions with content and ads, usage duration and frequency, engagement with other users, and certain interactions with websites in TikTok’s in-app browser.
- Location and device context: The US policy covers approximate location inferred from device or network information, and approximate or precise device location when location services are enabled, as well as technical and device information.
- Partner and seller information: The US policy says advertisers, publishers, and measurement partners may provide information about off-platform pages visited, products purchased, and apps downloaded. TikTok also says it receives purchase confirmation and delivery information from sellers and transaction providers.
The Shop policy says order information is shared with merchants, logistics providers, and payment providers as needed to fulfill orders and payments. This is an order-processing disclosure; it does not say that a merchant receives everything a shopper types into an assistant chat.

TikTok’s US policy lists purposes including operating, improving, and developing its services; training, testing, and improving machine-learning models and algorithms; personalizing certain features and content; providing shopping and facilitating purchase and delivery; and improving advertising services and measuring ads. The policy also describes inferring additional information, such as users’ interests.

It says information may be shared with service providers and business partners for operational work such as research, payment processing, transaction fulfillment, technology services, delivery, analytics, measurement, storage, and advertising or marketing. TikTok Shop’s policy separately describes using buyer information to enable purchases and delivery, support users with orders, and optimize Shop features.

In particular, the specific ad-page assistant description identifies merchant-provided product information as the basis for its answers, while the policies do not identify which personal signals, if any, enter a given answer.
What you can do about privacy
TikTok’s US policy describes rights to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information. It also says in-app settings can be used to update account information, request a data copy, deactivate an account, or delete it; some cookie controls are available through browser settings. The available rights and controls depend on applicable law, region, device, browser, and feature, so check TikTok’s current in-app controls and the policy that applies where you live.
- For a product question, ask for the concrete detail you need—such as sizing, materials, shipping, or stock—and check the merchant’s product listing or support channel if the answer is incomplete.
- Before placing an order, review the checkout destination and the information requested there. The product-page flow TikTok describes may continue to the merchant’s site.
- Use the account and privacy controls available in your region to review or manage information, rather than assuming that one setting controls all shopping, advertising, and AI processing.
The documented launch materials do not provide a complete country-by-country availability list, and they do not establish that every data practice described in the US policies applies identically in every region. Product surfaces may also change as TikTok expands the feature.
