Uranium’s spot price is a near-term market indicator; a long-term contract price reflects negotiated supply for delivery farther in the future. They are not interchangeable quotes: spot and long-term figures can use different definitions, data methods, delivery periods and buyer populations, and neither necessarily reveals the price available for a particular deal.
What “spot” and “long-term” mean
The labels mainly describe delivery timing, but there is no single threshold used by every source.

- U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA): a spot purchase is usually a one-time delivery within a year after the contract is signed. EIA classifies a contract with one or more deliveries at least a year after signing as long-term. EIA’s Uranium Marketing Annual Report
- Euratom Supply Agency (ESA): spot means one delivery, or deliveries spanning no more than 12 months, regardless of how long after signing the first delivery occurs. ESA calls deliveries extending beyond 12 months multiannual. ESA’s methodology
- Cameco’s industry description: long-term contracts generally have deliveries beginning more than two years after finalization. This is a commercial description, not the same classification rule used by EIA or ESA. Cameco Q2 2026 report
When comparing quoted prices, use the definition belonging to the publisher or dataset rather than assuming that every “spot” or “term” series groups contracts identically.

How published prices are formed
Spot is an assessed indicator, not an exchange closing price
Uranium does not trade on an open commodity exchange in the way many widely traded commodities do; buyers and sellers negotiate privately. UxC says its U₃O₈ spot indicator takes account of the most competitive offer it knows, along with bids, transactions and timing. It cautions that the figure is not necessarily based on a completed transaction. Historically, spot contracts could allow delivery up to 12 months ahead, but UxC says current deliveries are mostly in a forward one-to-three-month prompt period. UxC’s price methodology

Long-term contract prices depend on negotiated formulas
Common structures include a base-escalated price, set at contracting and escalated over the contract term, and a market-referenced price, determined closer to delivery using spot or long-term indicators. Market-referenced formulas often have floors and ceilings, which may also escalate. These are common structures, not terms that can be assumed for every private contract. Cameco’s 2025 annual report
Cameco calculates its industry-average spot and long-term series from month-end prices published by UxC and TradeTech. UxC describes its indicators as proprietary; its daily prices are available to subscribers. Such series are useful market references, but they do not disclose the negotiated terms of each contract. Why the numbers can differ: 2025 examples
Two valid 2025 comparisons illustrate why the source and measurement need to be named.

|---|---|---|---|
| EIA, 2025 data published in 2026 | 13% of U.S. uranium deliveries; weighted average $76.01/lb U₃O₈ equivalent | 87% of deliveries; weighted average $55.91/lb U₃O₈ equivalent | Realized contract prices for uranium delivered to U.S. civilian reactor owners, weighted by reported quantities. EIA’s total-weighted average was $58.46/lb across 46.9 million pounds U₃O₈ equivalent delivered. |
| Cameco, 2025 annual report published in 2026 | Reported average indicator: $73.54/lb | Reported average indicator: $81.96/lb | Market indicators, not weighted averages of the same U.S. utility deliveries counted by EIA. Cameco reported that its spot average was 14% lower than in 2024; its long-term indicator ended 2025 at $86.50/lb. |
The apparent reversal is not a contradiction. EIA reports weighted averages for U.S. utility deliveries under contracts, while Cameco reports monthly market indicators sourced from UxC and TradeTech. The buyer population, timing basis and calculation differ; EIA also says its weighted averages are not inflation-adjusted. EIA · EIA Table 7 · Cameco 2025 annual report

What the latest dated figures do—and do not—tell you
In Cameco’s Q2 2026 report, average reported spot was $85.00/lb and average reported long-term was $95.50/lb as of June 30, 2026. These are dated market indicators, not live quotations for October 2026 and not a guaranteed price for a specific buyer or contract. Cameco Q2 2026 report

A meaningful comparison should identify what each figure measures, not just place two dollar amounts side by side. Check these details:

- Category and definition: spot indicator, spot-contract price, long-term indicator or long-term-contract delivery price—and the source’s timing rule.
- Publisher and method: for example, an assessed market indicator versus a reported weighted average of completed deliveries.
- Date and period: the indicator’s as-of date or the period in which material was delivered.
- Geography and population: ESA’s EU utility indicators and EIA’s U.S. reactor-owner data cover different populations. ESA excludes some intermediary and non-utility contracts and publishes indices only when minimum contract counts are met to support reliability and confidentiality. ESA methodology
- Material and unit: EIA reports uranium prices in dollars per pound of U₃O₈ equivalent. Confirm the chemical form and unit used in any other series.
- Fuel-cycle services: EIA’s uranium-component price for natural and enriched UF₆ excludes conversion and enrichment service components. A uranium-only figure is not directly comparable to a bundled price that includes those services. ESA records material details including chemical form and whether conversion is included, and applies stated unit and currency conversion methods. EIA Table 7 · ESA methodology
For a practical comparison, state the source, date or delivery period, geography, price type, material and unit, and whether conversion or enrichment is included. Without those details, a difference between two figures may reflect different measurement scopes rather than a change in uranium’s underlying market price.
