The lake’s surface affects evaporation, near-surface humidity and temperature, and local winds. A regional model found that replacing the lake with bare soil altered those conditions and convection—but its small average rainfall change was a simulation result, not a measured trend or a forecast for every storm.
How a shrinking lake can change local weather
The Dead Sea is a terminal lake: water flows in, but there is no natural outlet. Its water balance is shaped by inflow, precipitation, and evaporation. As the lake retreats, it changes the boundary between water and land that helps shape the air above and around it.

Water evaporating from the lake adds moisture to the lower atmosphere. The water surface also heats and cools differently from the surrounding land. Those contrasts affect near-surface temperature and humidity and can help drive local wind circulations. A smaller lake means a changed surface and a changed source of local moisture; it does not mean the lake controls the region’s weather on its own.
The valley’s topography and shifting air flows matter too. A 2018 atmospheric study of foehn events in the Dead Sea region describes effects on temperature, humidity, evaporation, aerosol distribution, and visibility. That context helps explain why changes to the lake surface may matter locally, but it does not show that every unusual local weather event is caused by lake shrinkage.

What the climate model found—and what it did not
In a 2020 peer-reviewed study, Khodayar and Hoerner compared regional simulations for 2003–2013. Their reference simulation included the Dead Sea; in a sensitivity simulation, the lake area was represented as bare soil. This was an idealized comparison designed to examine the lake’s influence, not a measurement of what happened as the real shoreline retreated.

The authors also noted limitations, including how precipitation and moisture sources were represented. The result is therefore best read as evidence of a possible local influence, not a direct prediction of future rainfall or a claim that drying will make all weather more extreme.

Why the Dead Sea is shrinking
Changes in the lake’s water balance reflect both human water use and climatic influences. The 2021 Scientific Reports study identifies upstream water use as a major driver and notes that climate change can further reduce inflows. It reports that irrigation projects upstream reduced freshwater inflow from the Jordan River by about 90% compared with the natural situation before 1955. That is a historical comparison reported in the paper, not a current flow measurement.
The same study estimates net water use for potash production at about 250 million cubic metres per year. It also reports a net evaporation estimate of about 1,000 millimetres per year. These are figures published in 2021, not live 2026 readings.

A separate measurement-based estimate comes from Metzger and colleagues’ 2018 Journal of Hydrology study. Using two years of eddy-covariance measurements over the Dead Sea, the researchers estimated annual evaporation at 1.13 ± 0.13 metres per year. That figure describes their measurement period; it should not be treated as a current annual rate.
Weather hazards are not the same as shoreline hazards
The Dead Sea basin can experience severe convection and heavy rain capable of producing flash floods. The 2020 model indicates that changing the lake surface can affect atmospheric conditions relevant to convection, but it does not establish that shrinkage has made flash floods more frequent or severe. Nor does it predict the outcome of any particular storm.

Sinkholes and subsidence are a separate hazard. As the shoreline retreats, changing groundwater conditions can dissolve underground salt layers, leaving ground that may collapse. The 2021 study discusses subsidence and hazardous sinkhole phenomena in areas affected by lake-level decline and changing hydro-meteorological conditions; the USGS Earthshots page also describes sinkholes forming in exposed salty seabed. These are ground and groundwater processes, not effects created directly by atmospheric changes.

A 2017 study estimated a lower equilibrium level of 516–537 metres below mean sea level under its assumptions of present climate and no inflow. It associated that range with brine water activity of 0.46–0.39. This is a conditional analysis of where the lake might stabilize under specified assumptions, not a dated forecast of when it will reach that level or a current shoreline measurement.

The evidence supports a specific conclusion: the Dead Sea is part of the local climate system, and changing its surface can alter nearby atmospheric conditions. The scale and consequences of those changes remain distinct from the better-established water-use pressures driving the lake’s decline, and the available model result does not establish a regional climate runaway.
