The same class of bridging ligand assembled with metal salts into two strikingly different structures: a closed molecular cube and an open-book-like framework. The result, reported in a 2006 chemistry paper, shows that related building blocks can produce different architectures—but the published summary does not establish why one assembly forms rather than the other.
What did the researchers assemble?
Stephen P. Argent, Harry Adams, Lindsay P. Harding, and Michael D. Ward studied a bis-bidentate bridging ligand called L1 with two metal salts: Co(ClO4)2 and Zn(BF4)2. Their report describes two products, [M8(L1)12]X16 and [M6(L1)9]X12, which have the same metal-to-ligand ratio despite containing different total numbers of metal ions and ligand units. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s article record gives the structural formulas and the authors’ description.

Here, “same components” refers to the shared type of bridging ligand and the metal-salt choices in the assembly study, not identical complete molecular formulas. The two products differ in size and arrangement; the formulas should not be read as two names for the same molecule.
How do the cube and open-book structures differ?
| Feature | Molecular cube | Open-book framework |
|---|---|---|
| Reported formula | [M8(L1)12]X16 | [M6(L1)9]X12 |
| Metal and ligand counts | Eight metal ions and twelve ligand units | Six metal ions and nine ligand units |
| Metal-framework topology | A metal ion occupies each of the cube’s eight vertices; bridging ligands span its twelve edges. | An open-book-like metal framework contains cross-linked double-helical metal–ligand subunits. |
| Overall shape | Closed, cube-like molecular architecture | Open, book-like architecture |
The cube is a closed cage-like form, while the second product is described through its open framework and helical subunits. The paper’s abstract supplies these high-level structural descriptions; it does not provide grounds here for ranking the products by stability, yield, guest binding, or practical performance.

How can related building blocks make different structures?
Metal–ligand self-assembly is the formation of organized structures through the connections between metal ions and ligands that can bind them. A bridging ligand can link more than one metal center, so the pattern of those connections matters as well as the identities of the ingredients. In this study, the reported products show that the same ligand class and metal-salt choices can be associated with more than one elaborate architecture.
That finding does not, by itself, explain the selection process. The abstract does not establish whether the cube or open-book structure is favored by a particular reaction pathway, equilibrium, or other condition. It therefore supports the observation of distinct products, not a definitive mechanism for how the assembly chooses between them.

What was the significance—and what remains prospective?
A contemporary Chemistry World report by Alison Stoddart, published 9 January 2006, discussed the result in the context of the longer-term challenge of controlling self-assembly and predicting its outcomes computationally. Those were prospective implications, not evidence that the reported structures already had commercial uses or that a predictive method had been demonstrated for them.
The same report attributes this reaction to Ward: “There is ’an almost magical fascination in seeing these structures appear without any major effort,’ said Ward.” It also reports his surprise at the complexity, since he had expected much simpler architecture.
