In Ilya Mikhasik’s account, that need led from a general entity-and-link model to reusable registries: database-access services that give different data structures a consistent way to create, retrieve, search, update, and remove records.
Why the Network Discovery Service needed a general model
The system began with Kroozheva, an application for discovering connections among objects such as people, workplaces, cities, and professions. A conventional design could give each kind of object its own table and relationship structure. That approach, however, would also mean repeating much of the data-access code as new object types were added.

Instead, the described design used two general building blocks. An entity held common identifying and status information alongside flexible JSON data for attributes specific to that entity type. A link represented a relationship between two entities and could carry its own attributes. The article’s shorthand is “Entity ─── Link ─── Entity.”

It also created a practical follow-up problem: the application still needed predictable ways to work with each structure.

What a registry is—and what it standardizes
A registry is a database-access service for a particular table or data structure. Rather than reimplementing routine operations for every entity type, the system could expose them through a familiar interface. The pattern applied both to entities, such as users or profiles, and to relationship data, such as links.
The point is consistency, not a new kind of database. Registries provide a common foundation for operations such as creating, retrieving, listing or searching, updating, and deleting or deactivating records. Some operations can also work on batches. According to Mikhasik, this shared layer is intended to reduce duplicated access code and make behavior more uniform across registries (Ilya Mikhasik’s DEV Community article).

How the registry API supports listing, filtering, and search
The described API separates collection requests from requests for an individual object, using predictable naming conventions across registries. Collection requests can combine pagination, filters, search, and ordering. The query conventions below belong to this system; they are not a universal API standard.
Recommended Free Tools
- Pagination:
limitandoffsetcontrol how many results are returned and where a collection page begins. - Filtering: requests can filter on regular fields or address keys in the flexible JSON data. The examples include exact matching, case-insensitive containment, and numeric comparisons with explicit types.
- Search: requests can search generally or within selected fields, including nested fields in JSON data.
- Ordering: results can be ordered by one or more fields, in ascending or descending form; the described examples also order by JSON data values.
JSON fields let different entity types carry distinct attributes without requiring a database column for every possible attribute. The trade-off is that consumers need to understand the system’s query conventions and the shape of the relevant JSON data.

How application services interact with registries
Instead of having each application service construct registry requests on its own, the article describes a shared asynchronous function, interact_with_registry(...). It accepts request context, an HTTP method, the registry base URL and name, an optional object ID, query parameters, request data, filtering and error-handling options, and a timeout.
The shared function builds a collection or single-object URL, serializes request data, forwards session context, sends the HTTP request, validates the response, and converts failures into application-level exceptions. The listed methods are GET, POST, PUT, PATCH, and DELETE.

Centralizing this work gives callers a common place to handle transport errors, invalid JSON, missing or empty results, duplicate-object responses, hidden or deactivated objects, and other unsuccessful responses. Options such as active_records and raise_not_found can change some of that behavior, so callers still need to choose settings that fit their workflow.

python manage.py createregistry --template=registry_template.zip people --model_name=Person
The example is the workflow described in the article, not a verified instruction for a current package release. It proceeds from generated structure to an integrated, tested registry:
- Generate the registry: run the factory command with the template, registry name, and model name.
- Install the app: add the generated application to
INSTALLED_APPS. - Create and apply migrations: prepare the database schema for the generated registry.
- Register its viewsets: connect the generated API views to the project router.
- Run tests: the article gives
python manage.py test peopleas an example. - Inspect the API: use Swagger UI to review the registered endpoints.
Once the shared structure is in place, developers can add fields, validation, permissions, and business rules specific to the entity type.

The design’s key boundary is between common data access and workflow-specific meaning. A registry and its factory provide reusable structure, metadata, API conventions, filtering, and CRUD behavior. Application services remain responsible for what a particular workflow means and which business rules it must enforce.

That separation is what makes a consistent registry interface useful: different data structures can share persistence patterns without forcing every application workflow into generic CRUD logic. The article does not report performance measurements or quantified results, so the case for the approach is architectural rather than a claim of measured speed or scale.
What changes compared with entity-specific access code
The article does not benchmark this design against alternatives. The differences below are architectural implications of the described approach, not measured outcomes.
Quick Recap
| Design concern | Entity-specific tables and access code | Generic entity-and-link model with registries |
|---|---|---|
| Adding entity types | Typically calls for defining the type’s data structure and its access operations separately. | Can reuse shared entity and registry foundations, then add type-specific fields and rules. |
| CRUD consistency | Depends on each implementation following the same conventions. | Common operations are exposed through a shared registry pattern. |
| Query flexibility | Depends on the schema and access layer built for each type. | Combines shared collection conventions with filters and searches into flexible JSON data. |
| Visibility of entity-specific attributes | Attributes can be represented directly in type-specific structures. | Flexible JSON accommodates varying attributes, but their shape is less explicit in a fixed set of columns. |
| Location of business rules | May vary by implementation. | The intended boundary keeps workflow-specific rules in application services, outside generic persistence. |
