On the original full-size Logitech MX Keys, the ambient light sensor is identified as part of the same assembly as the battery-status LED: item 5 in Logitech’s product-overview diagram. It reads the surrounding light and adapts the keyboard backlight. Logitech publishes the lighting thresholds, but not the sensor’s internal components or control algorithm.
Where to find the MX Keys ambient light sensor
Open Logitech’s MX Keys setup and product-overview page and find numbered item 5. Logitech labels it “Battery status LED and ambient light sensor.” The diagram is the manufacturer’s identification of the assembly; its documentation does not specify a separate sensor’s precise internal placement.

The wording means the battery-status indicator and ambient light sensor are identified together. Logitech describes the sensor as embedded in the keyboard. It is not presented as a user-replaceable part, and the documentation does not give a reason to open the keyboard to find it. The USB-C charging port’s location at the top-right does not establish where the sensor itself sits.

Logitech says the embedded sensor reads ambient light and adapts the backlight. For the original, dark-colored full-size MX Keys, its published guidance maps room brightness to these settings:

| Ambient light | Backlight setting | Brightness |
|---|---|---|
| Under 100 lux | L2 | 25% |
| 100–200 lux | L4 | 50% |
| Over 200 lux | L0 | Off |
These are Logitech’s documented settings, not independent measurements. The original MX Keys has eight backlight levels, but the chart gives examples of how ambient-light conditions correspond to particular levels. Logitech does not explain the sensor type, sampling interval, calibration, or algorithm, so the documented behavior should not be read as a detailed account of its electronics.
Why the thresholds differ across MX Keys models
“MX Keys” covers variants whose lighting guidance is not interchangeable. Model and color matter, so check the exact keyboard before comparing its behavior with another version.

Original full-size MX Keys
For the original dark-colored model, Logitech lists under 100 lux as L2/25%, 100–200 lux as L4/50%, and over 200 lux as L0/off. It specifies eight backlight levels.

For dark-colored MX Keys S models, Logitech lists the same three ambient-light bands and levels as the original. For pale-gray MX Keys S, the guidance instead lists below 55 lux as L4/50% and above 55 lux as off. Logitech specifies seven backlight levels for MX Keys S. Its MX Keys S setup guidance also says Logi Options+ can change backlight duration and switch from automatic brightness to manual mode.

MX Keys Mini Rose and Pale Gray
Logitech’s guidance for the MX Keys Mini Rose and Pale Gray describes an additional behavior: when the keyboard is on, it can detect approaching hands and relight the backlight. That page lists below 100 lux for level 4 and over 100 lux for off. It also notes that low battery, bright conditions, or backlighting disabled manually or in software can affect whether the backlight turns on. This Mini-specific explanation should not be assumed to describe the original full-size model.
Why the backlight may not turn on
Ambient brightness is not the only factor. Logitech says the original MX Keys backlight cannot be turned on when the room is bright or the battery is low, and that it turns off when the battery reaches 10%. Logitech’s MX Keys S support guidance also documents a 10% battery cutoff. A dark room alone therefore does not guarantee illumination if the battery is low or backlighting has been disabled.

For MX Keys S, Logi Options+ provides controls for backlight duration and manual brightness. The original-model guidance cited above describes its levels and automatic behavior, but does not document those same customization controls there.
Identify your keyboard before troubleshooting
Check the model name first: the original full-size MX Keys, MX Keys S, and MX Keys Mini have distinct support guidance. Logitech’s MX Keys Wireless Illuminated Keyboard support page can help identify the original product. Then account for the color variant, since Logitech gives pale-gray MX Keys S a different threshold from its dark-colored models.
