Its outputs can show either one moving light (dot mode) or a cumulative row of lights (bar mode). The chip also includes an adjustable reference and regulated LED outputs, but Texas Instruments now lists it as obsolete and no longer in production.
How does the LM3914 turn voltage into lights?
The LM3914 is a ten-channel display driver. Inside, an input buffer feeds ten comparators, which check the input voltage against thresholds established by a precision divider. The thresholds span the voltage range configured for the display, so the lit position advances as the input crosses successive steps. TI describes the result as a linear analog display.

The chip has a built-in adjustable reference and divider. Its outputs regulate current for the display elements, so the basic datasheet application does not need a separate current-limiting resistor for every LED. The datasheet specifies programmable output current from 2 mA to 30 mA; actual circuit design must follow its operating conditions and component guidance.

| Mode | What lights | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Dot | One output marks the current step, moving as the input changes. | You want a clear pointer and fewer illuminated segments at a given reading. |
| Bar | The current output and the lower steps remain lit, forming a growing bar. | You want the magnitude to be visible as an accumulating fill. |
The modes differ in how many display elements are lit, so their load on the supply depends on the selected mode and configured output current. The datasheet does not provide a universal numeric power comparison for every circuit. In dot mode, TI specifies about 1 mV of overlap or “fade” between segments to avoid a moment when all LEDs are off as the indication changes.
What specifications matter when using an LM3914?
- Channels: Ten display outputs, with dot or bar operation.
- Reference: Internal reference range listed as 1.2 V to 12 V.
- Supply: Single-supply operation below 3 V is described under the conditions in the datasheet; this is not a blanket guarantee for every configuration.
- Output current: Programmable from 2 mA to 30 mA, per TI’s 2013 datasheet.
- Operating temperature: 0°C to +70°C.
- Package example: TI identifies LM3914N-1 as an 18-lead PDIP option.
At lower full-scale voltages, input-buffer and comparator offsets can become a significant part of the reading. Do not treat a typical nonlinearity figure as guaranteed accuracy for every low-voltage circuit; consult the datasheet for circuit-specific limits and design conditions.

How can an LM3914 display be expanded?
TI’s datasheet describes cascading drivers for displays of 20 to more than 100 segments, and using two drivers for a zero-center meter. It also lists applications such as analog meters, visual alarms, controllers, programmers, and sequencers. Display loads described by TI include LEDs, LCDs, vacuum fluorescent displays, and low-current incandescent lamps. These are application possibilities, not assurances that every load or arrangement works without additional design considerations.

Should you choose the LM3914 for a new project?
TI’s product information page, reviewed October 7, 2026, marks the LM3914 obsolete and says it is no longer in production. The datasheet documents the device and its package option, but does not establish current seller stock. Check the exact package and source before planning a build around it; a marketplace listing alone does not establish authenticity, condition, or continuing availability.

The manufacturer documents the LM3914’s function, but the information here does not establish an exact compatible substitute. If considering another driver, compare the channel count, dot/bar behavior, interface, package, supply range, and lifecycle status rather than assuming a different part is a drop-in replacement.
