Jonathan H. Kantor says using the Huion Note E helped him turn a long-delayed book idea into several chapters, an expanding outline, and character biographies. That is one reviewer’s experience—not proof that a tablet will make anyone more creative—but it shows the kind of low-friction, handwritten workflow the device can support.
What the Huion Note E is—and what it isn’t
The Huion Note E, model X50, is an 8.4-inch Android electronic notebook built for digital note-taking, reading, and drawing. It has a color LCD, not an E Ink screen. That distinction matters: it can display color and offers a conventional, responsive tablet experience, but it is not an e-reader designed around the reflective display technology used in E Ink devices.

Huion lists a 1920 × 1200 resolution, 270 PPI, 60 Hz refresh rate, 16.7 million colors, and 300 nits typical brightness. Those are manufacturer specifications published in 2026. The tablet runs Android 15 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Huion Note E specifications

In his August 25, 2026 SlashGear review, Jonathan H. Kantor described carrying the Note E and writing ideas by hand as a way to make progress on a book he had put off. He reported having several chapters, a growing outline, and character biographies written down on the tablet. Huion supplied the review unit, and Kantor explicitly presented his recommendation as based on his own use.

The takeaway is about workflow, not a guaranteed creative effect. A dedicated writing surface can make it convenient to capture fragments, sketch a scene, or build character notes without opening a laptop. Whether handwriting helps you think is personal; the review establishes what happened for Kantor, not what will happen for every writer.

The included PW510 pen is battery-free and attaches magnetically to the tablet. Huion specifies 8,192 pressure levels and tilt recognition. Kantor praised the pen attachment and the screen’s paper-like texture. He used Google Keep for handwriting, according to his review.

Huion says the device can convert handwriting into editable text in 34 languages, export notes, annotate PDFs and other documents, and back up to Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox. These are manufacturer-described features; the exact workflow and results can depend on the app and account setup.
Drawing
Kantor downloaded Sketchbook and Kindle and also tried the preinstalled HiPaint drawing app. He preferred Sketchbook. That is his app preference rather than a universal recommendation, but it illustrates the flexibility of an Android tablet: the Note E is not limited to a single notebook program.

Controls and everyday handling
The reviewer noted that the device has only one physical button. Adjusting volume therefore means using settings or earbuds rather than dedicated volume buttons. That is a small but practical trade-off if you expect to switch often between writing and media playback.
How it compares with other compact writing choices
Kantor’s review also considered the 10.3-inch Boox Note Air5 C, the Viwoods Aipaper Mini Paper Tablet, and the similarly sized iPad mini. His comparisons are impressions, not controlled side-by-side testing. The key choice is whether you want an Android LCD notebook with color and a textured writing surface, or a different screen size or display approach.

Battery life and the LCD trade-off
Huion lists a 4,500 mAh battery and approximately 6.5 hours of battery life at 50% brightness, based on the manufacturer’s testing. Huion also says actual battery life varies with use scenarios. Treat that as a qualified manufacturer estimate, not a guaranteed runtime for a particular mix of writing, reading, drawing, and app use.

The LCD is the defining compromise. It supports color and a 60 Hz refresh rate, while the product is still intended to feel like a paper notebook when writing. Readers seeking an E Ink screen specifically should not mistake the Note E for one; the SlashGear review explicitly distinguishes its LCD from traditional E Ink.
Who should consider the Huion Note E?
- Writers who think on paper: A magnetic stylus and dedicated note-taking surface may suit brainstorming, outlines, and handwritten scene fragments.
- People who also draw: The pressure- and tilt-sensitive pen, color LCD, and Android app support make drawing part of the use case.
- Readers who want an Android notebook: Huion positions it for reading as well as note-taking and drawing, with Kindle among the apps Kantor tried.
- People who require E Ink: This is not the right screen technology if reflective E Ink is a must-have.
The reviewer mentioned Huion’s Palm Rejection Artist Glove as an optional drawing accessory and said he did not need one with the tablet. His review reported a $9.99 price at the time; check current availability and price if considering it.
