Its documented ways to carry knowledge between sessions are authored instruction files such as CLAUDE.md and auto memory. Obsidian can serve as an organized source for that context, but the connection depends on how you make its notes available to Claude Code.
How Claude Code remembers a project between sessions
Claude Code sessions start with a fresh context window. To carry useful information forward, Claude Code documents two complementary mechanisms: instruction files you write and auto memory, which can save selected learnings. Neither is a permanent transcript of every conversation.

Claude Code’s memory documentation describes CLAUDE.md files for durable instructions and a separate memory directory for notes Claude may use in later sessions. The files provide context; they are not a guarantee that Claude will follow every instruction.

Use CLAUDE.md for guidance that should shape work consistently: project conventions, architecture notes, common commands, and personal workflow preferences. Claude Code also documents support for AGENTS.md; how those files load depends on the project’s files and settings.

Keep instructions concise, specific, and free of contradictions. A stale rule or conflicting directions can make behavior inconsistent. These files guide Claude; they do not enforce behavior.
Use auto memory for selected learnings
Auto memory can preserve useful preferences, corrections, project context that cannot be inferred from code, and references. Its MEMORY.md file acts as an index, with more detailed notes in separate topic files. At session start, Claude Code loads only the first 200 lines or 25 KB of MEMORY.md, whichever limit is reached first. Detailed topic files are read on demand, not all loaded automatically.

The documentation says auto memory is enabled by default in local sessions. It describes memory as machine-local by default, shared across worktrees of the same repository, and not shared across machines or cloud environments. Behavior can vary in background or self-hosted contexts, so check the current documentation and your Claude Code version for your environment.

Obsidian may be the place you organize project notes, decisions, and reference material, but the vault itself is not a Claude Code memory feature. The practical question is how selected notes reach a Claude Code session. You could distill durable guidance into a project instruction file or make a relevant note available when needed; the appropriate method depends on your setup.

The available documentation does not establish a specific automatic Obsidian integration, vault layout, synchronization method, or retrieval workflow. Do not assume Claude Code can see every note in a vault unless you have deliberately connected or exposed those files. Anthropic describes MCP as an open protocol for applications to provide context to language models, but that does not mean a particular Obsidian vault is connected through MCP.
For an Obsidian-based system to be reproducible, document which notes are used, how they enter Claude Code, what loads automatically versus on demand, and how you handle updates. Without those details, claims about a particular build or its results cannot be verified.

What belongs in CLAUDE.md versus memory?

How to keep persistent context useful
- Keep the always-loaded index selective. Put only high-value pointers and recurring context in
MEMORY.md; keep detail in topic files or other references. - Separate stable rules from evolving knowledge. Put conventions that should apply every session in project instructions; treat preferences and accumulated learnings as memory that may need revision.
- Check what actually loaded. Use
/contextto inspect session context and/memoryto inspect or edit memory locations. - Review for drift. Remove outdated, duplicated, or conflicting guidance rather than letting notes accumulate without maintenance.
- Use hooks when timing is mandatory. If an operation must happen before a commit or at another specified event, use a hook rather than relying only on a written instruction.
Limits to keep in mind
Persistent notes improve continuity, but they consume context when loaded and can become outdated. Claude Code explicitly treats memory files as context rather than enforced configuration, so a note is not a substitute for a control that must run reliably. Obsidian may help organize source material, but the benefit depends on what is actually connected and available to the session—not on the vault’s existence alone.
