Sony says it uses two haptic actuators in their place, and the sensations you feel depend on what each game tells those actuators to produce. Sony’s official material does not publish the actuators’ internal design or a detailed hardware specification, so this article separates what Sony and its developers have described from what remains unpublished.
What Sony says is inside the controller
Sony’s current DualSense product page describes “dual actuators” that replace traditional rumble motors. That is the most specific hardware description Sony publishes. The phrase “haptic motors” is common shorthand, and it is understandable, but Sony’s own product copy calls these components actuators, so this article uses that term.

Several details are not established by Sony’s official material:
- The actuator type or internal construction (for example, the arrangement of coils, magnets or moving masses).
- Frequency range, force output, power draw or response speed.
- The controller’s circuit design or the signal format sent to the actuators.
- Any measured comparison between DualSense haptics and DualShock rumble.
Any article that names a specific motor design or quotes a performance figure for the DualSense is going beyond what Sony has published.
#1 Best Overall
- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Where the sensation comes from: the game decides
The clearest public account of how haptics are used comes from the PlayStation.Blog article “How Housemarque created Returnal’s immersive DualSense controller effects,” published May 13, 2021. It describes a division of work that is useful for understanding the feature:
- The game chooses the event. A game decides what tactile event to convey and when it happens.
- Designers shape the effect. Designers create different intensities, patterns and timing for different events.
- The player feels the result through the controller. The sensation is delivered by the controller’s actuators, not by the trigger mechanism.
Because the authoring happens in each game, two titles can use the same hardware very differently. A game with few haptic effects will feel very different from one that uses them throughout play.
The sound-design analogy
Harvey Scott, a sound designer at PlayStation Studios’ Creative Services Group, wrote in the same Returnal article: “The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback is powered by technology that makes it similar to that of a loudspeaker or headphones.” He draws from this a practical conclusion: sound-design principles can be applied to design haptic experiences.

Treat this as a practitioner’s analogy about how the technology is authored, not as a statement that the controller contains speakers. It explains why sound designers were brought into haptic work. It does not explain the electrical path from a game to the actuators.
Returnal as a worked example
Returnal is the most detailed developer account Sony has published. It shows the kinds of choices a team makes, but it is one game’s approach, not a description of every title.
Procedural raindrop pulses
Returnal’s team describes raindrops that generate tactile pulses procedurally, so the feedback reflects the rain falling in the game rather than a single repeated effect.

Feedback weighted toward movement direction
The team describes weighting feedback toward the direction of movement, so that the sensation carries a sense of where the player is heading.

Tactile pulses as combat information
Returnal uses tactile pulses to communicate combat information. The team describes differentiated cues, meaning different combat events are designed to feel different from one another.
Reserving the strongest effects
The team reserves its most intense sensations for selected moments. The stated purpose is to keep subtle effects and forceful effects distinguishable, so that a strong pulse still means something when it arrives.

Haptics and adaptive triggers are separate systems
The DualSense has two features that are often discussed together but work in different places. Sony describes adaptive triggers as changing force and tension at L2 and R2. Haptics provide tactile sensation through the controller. The table compares them using Sony’s official descriptions.
| Feature | Where it acts | What it conveys | Sony’s example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haptic feedback | Through the controller, via the two actuators | Tactile sensations of events and surfaces | Driving a car through mud (Jim Ryan, 2020 announcement) |
| Adaptive triggers | At L2 and R2 themselves | Variable force and tension on the trigger | Drawing a bow or braking a car (PlayStation.Blog, April 7, 2020) |
Neither feature’s output is quantified in Sony’s official descriptions, so the table compares location and type of sensation rather than strength.
How haptics differ from traditional rumble
Sony states that the DualSense replaces traditional rumble motors with dual actuators. In its 2020 announcement, Sony CEO Jim Ryan wrote: “This is why we adopted haptic feedback, which adds a variety of powerful sensations you’ll feel when you play, such as the slow grittiness of driving a car through mud.” That is a product-design explanation and example, not a technical specification.
Best Value
- Enjoy precise, comfortable control over 10,000+ supported Steam games.
- Easily pair the controller directly to your Windows PC via Bluetooth or play as you charge with the included USB Type-C cable
- Stay paired with up to four different Bluetooth devices, making it easy to enjoy the controller across Windows PC, Mac, PS5 consoles and smartphones. Discover more connection tips and tricks at playstation.com/pair-dualsense
- Access the latest available controller firmware directly from your PC with the free-todownload PlayStation Accessories app
- Play games streamed from your PS5 or PS4 console to your PC via the PS Remote Play App
The published difference is in the range of sensations that developers can author and in how each game shapes them, as the Returnal account shows. Official sources do not provide a measured comparison of strength, precision or responsiveness against DualShock rumble, so claims that DualSense haptics are stronger or more accurate are not supported by Sony’s material.
When you will feel haptics: game and platform support
Whether haptic feedback appears depends on the game, the platform and the connection. PlayStation’s “Controllers Support” page, accessed October 7, 2026, gives the following guidance:
- Game support is required. Haptic feedback only occurs in games that implement it.
- PC may require USB. On PC, haptic feedback may require a USB connection rather than a wireless one.
- Mac computers and mobile devices are not compatible under the listed guidance.
Support can change with the device, the game, the connection method and the software version. Check the current support page before assuming a particular setup will produce haptics.
