Its Television Interface Adaptor (TIA) turns processor-written register values into video and sound signals: hardware handles horizontal timing, while game software supplies graphics state and manages vertical timing.
What the TIA does
Atari’s 1979 Stella Programmer’s Guide calls the TIA “a custom IC designed to create the TV picture and sound from the instructions sent to it by the microprocessor.” The chip converts 8-bit parallel processor data into signals sent to video modulation circuits. In practice, the processor writes values to TIA registers, and the chip uses that held state to produce the current raster output and audio. Ordinary register contents remain in effect until the software changes them. Atari, Inc., Stella Programmer’s Guide (December 3, 1979)

This is not a conventional framebuffer design: the guide describes graphics objects and timing registers, not a stored array of square screen pixels. The programmer must arrange register writes in time with the moving raster, including changing line-dependent graphics state as needed.

Horizontal timing is handled by hardware
In the guide’s typical example, a scan line lasts 228 color clocks. Of those, 160 are the visible sweep and 68 are horizontal blanking and return. A 3.58 MHz color-clock oscillator drives the horizontal counter. The processor clock is divided by three, leaving 76 processor machine cycles for each 228-color-clock line. These are the guide’s timing units; a color clock should not be read as a guaranteed one-to-one equivalent of a conventional modern pixel.

- HDMI Output: Connect instantly to modern TVs with HDMI output and widescreen mode.
The TIA generates horizontal sync automatically. Software can use the WSYNC register to align its work with the raster: writing WSYNC halts the processor until the beam reaches the right edge, and the processor resumes at the start of horizontal blanking.
Software supplies vertical timing
Unlike horizontal sync, vertical sync and blanking are controlled by software. The guide says, “All horizontal timing is taken care of by hardware, but the microprocessor must ‘manually’ control vertical timing to signal the start of the next frame.” Its typical frame example comprises 262 horizontal lines:

- 4-Switch Wood Grain Model
| Frame portion | Lines in Atari’s typical example |
|---|---|
| Vertical sync (VSYNC) | 3 |
| Vertical blank (VBLANK) | 37 |
| Picture | 192 |
| Overscan | 30 |
These counts describe the guide’s typical pattern, not every Atari 2600 video standard or console variation. The guide also discusses PAL and SECAM conversion, but its typical example is not a complete cross-standard timing table. Developers commonly updated the TIA every two lines to give the processor more time; that approach reduced vertical graphics resolution compared with updating every line.
How graphics and color are assembled
Playfield and movable objects
The TIA’s graphics model consists of one playfield and five movable objects: players 0 and 1, missiles 0 and 1, and the ball. Players are formed from bit patterns; missiles and the ball are narrower enabled shapes. The playfield is low resolution and must be redrawn to move, while player positioning is controlled through TIA registers. The chip also detects collisions between generated objects and exposes collision status for the processor to read.

Color and luminosity
Color and brightness (luminosity) are assigned through four color-luminosity registers shared among seven displayed object categories: player 0 and missile 0; player 1 and missile 1; playfield and ball; and the background by itself. The guide’s programming model provides 16 color selections and 8 luminosity levels. These are register choices, not a promise that every television standard or console revision will produce identical perceived colors.
How the TIA generates sound
The TIA contains two identical, independent audio circuits, which can operate at the same time. Each circuit is programmed with three types of control:

- AUDC: selects tone or noise behavior and additional division.
- AUDF: sets the frequency divider.
- AUDV: sets the volume level.
The guide describes the divider as operating on a reference of about 30 kHz. AUDC values select different pure-tone or noise-like patterns, while AUDF and AUDV shape the frequency and level. This is programmable tone/noise generation, not playback of sampled recordings. The exact audible result depends on the programmed register values.
What the timing model means for games
The processor and TIA work as a coordinated real-time system: the TIA advances the horizontal raster and emits output from its current state, while the program schedules updates and manages frame-level timing. WSYNC provides a way to regain alignment at a scan-line boundary; it does not remove the need to plan graphics and vertical timing. The guide’s 76-cycle line budget helps explain why programmers paid close attention to when register writes occurred and why updating graphics every two lines traded detail for more time.
