In a conventional game, the calls are love, 15, 30 and 40; a standard set usually requires six games and a two-game lead. At 6–6, a tiebreak or continued advantage play may apply, while the deciding-set format depends on the event’s rules.
How tennis scoring is organized
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) summarizes the structure this way: a match is made up of sets, a set of games, and a game of points. The order matters when you read a scoreboard: a player can lead in points within a game, games within a set, or sets within a match, and those are different kinds of leads. ITF Rules and Regulations

How points make a game
The server’s score is called first. A player’s first four points are conventionally called love, 15, 30 and 40; “love” means zero. To win a conventional game, a player must reach at least four points and lead by two. USTA: Tennis Scoring
Deuce and advantage
If both players reach 40, the score is deuce. With advantage scoring, the next point gives its winner advantage. Win the following point and that player wins the game; lose it and the score returns to deuce. Because a two-point margin is required, a deuce game can continue through multiple rounds of advantage.

No-ad scoring
Some leagues or competitions use no-ad scoring instead. At deuce, one deciding point determines the game, and the receiver chooses which side to receive from. This is a format variation, not the universal rule, so check the event’s regulations. USTA Flex League match guidelines
How games make a set
A conventional set is won by the first player or team to win at least six games with a margin of two. For example, 6–4 ends the set, while 5–5 does not: one side can take the next two games to win 7–5. The method used when the score reaches 6–6 depends on the competition’s announced rules. The ITF says the set method must be announced in advance. ITF Rules and Regulations

Tiebreak set
In a tiebreak set, a tiebreak is played at 6–6. The winner takes the set, which is recorded as 7–6.

In an advantage set, there is no tiebreak at 6–6. Games continue until one player or team leads by two, so the set may extend beyond 7–6.

How a standard tiebreak works
Unlike the familiar love–15–30–40 calls in a game, tiebreak points are counted 0, 1, 2 and onward. A side must reach at least seven points and lead by two to win. If the score reaches 6–6, play continues until one side has that two-point margin, such as 8–6 or 9–7. USTA: Tennis Scoring
The player who was due to serve starts the tiebreak; after that, service alternates in two-point turns. Players also change ends during the tiebreak according to the rules in force. The winner takes the set 7–6.

How many sets win a match?
A match’s set count is set by its format. Best-of-three means the first player or team to win two sets wins the match; best-of-five requires three. Best-of-three is the majority format, though some men’s matches use best-of-five. Check the event regulations for a specific match rather than assuming one format applies everywhere. ITF Rules and Regulations
What happens in a deciding set?
A deciding set may be played as a full set or replaced by a match tiebreak, depending on the competition. A match tiebreak is not the same thing as the tiebreak used to decide a set at 6–6: it replaces the deciding set itself.

Four Grand Slam tournaments
According to the USTA’s guide, the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open use a 10-point tiebreak at 6–6 in the deciding set. The first side to at least ten points with a two-point lead wins. The four tournaments announced this format in March 2022; the Australian Open had used it since 2019, and the other three began using it at the 2022 French Open. Those dates describe the introduction of this format at those events, not a rule for all tennis competitions. USTA: Tennis Scoring
Recreational league examples
Recreational formats can shorten a match or use different set structures. USTA Flex League guidance lists two sets plus a match tiebreak, three sets, and FAST4 sets; its example format uses a 10-point tiebreak when the score is one set all. Follow the rules published for your league or event. USTA Flex League match guidelines

Starter players may encounter shortened scoring rather than the conventional formats described above. The ITF’s Tennis Play and Stay materials cover multiple formats for its Red, Orange and Green stages, including recommended tiebreak and short-set formats. These are development formats, not the default for every match. The ITF also lists manuals and eBooks among its learning resources. ITF Tennis Play and Stay

Before play, look for the competition’s regulations or ask the organizer. These four details resolve most scoring questions:
- Is the match best-of-three or best-of-five?
- At 6–6 in a set, is there a standard tiebreak, or does the set continue until a two-game lead?
- Is the deciding set played in full, or replaced by a match tiebreak? If replaced, what is its target score?
- Are games played with advantage scoring or no-ad scoring?
