How Temporal Cloud Recovers Workflows—and Who Can Get $1,000 in Credits

Temporal Cloud can resume workflow executions from recorded history, but general signup pages showed $150 in credits. The $1,000 offers are tied to specific AWS contexts and eligibility.

Temporal Cloud can recover a workflow from recorded progress after failures, but it does not automatically make every part of an application failure-proof. And the advertised $1,000 in credits is not a universal signup offer: Temporal’s general free-start and signup pages showed $150, while $1,000 appeared in particular AWS-related offers with their own eligibility terms. Those live offers can change, so check the relevant offer page before signing up.

What “remembers where your app left off” means

Temporal describes its platform as a runtime for durable function executions called Workflow Executions. A workflow can coordinate steps in an application, while Temporal records its progress in an Event History. If an execution is interrupted by a process failure or outage, the service can use that recorded history to resume the workflow from its last recorded event. Temporal’s documentation defines Durable Execution as a Workflow Execution maintaining its state and progress despite failures, crashes, or server outages.

Temporal Cloud is the hosted, SaaS option for the Temporal Service that supervises executions and persists workflow history. Your application code still runs in Worker Processes that you host and operate with Temporal SDKs. Alternatively, you can self-host the open-source Temporal Service; that means taking responsibility for operating the service and its database rather than using Temporal Cloud.

What happens when an app or worker crashes?

  1. The workflow reaches a step. Worker code executes the workflow using a Temporal SDK, and the service records workflow progress in its history.
  2. A failure interrupts execution. A worker or other part of the environment may stop before the workflow has completed.
  3. The execution can resume from recorded progress. When a worker is available again, Temporal can use the history to continue the workflow rather than treating the entire sequence as an unrecorded, one-shot operation.

This is a workflow execution model, not a promise that any arbitrary application code will replay safely. Temporal’s training material distinguishes deterministic workflow definitions from Activities, which encapsulate unreliable or non-deterministic work. The workflow must follow the model the SDK expects; calls to external systems and other work that may vary or fail belong in the appropriate Activities.

Does Temporal Cloud give every new user $1,000?

No. The general Temporal free-start and signup pages surfaced in 2026 advertised $150 in Temporal Cloud credits. The signup page also described a no-risk trial for the first 90 days and said users could cancel anytime. Those are the terms shown on the pages at that time, not a guarantee that the same offer remains available now.

The $1,000 figure is associated with specific routes, not every account. Temporal’s AWS Summit Los Angeles page promoted $1,000 in credits for AWS Summit attendees through AWS Marketplace. Temporal’s AWS partner page advertised “up to” $1,000, but the surfaced page copy did not establish that every signup qualifies. Check the current terms and eligibility for the exact route you plan to use.

Offer path Advertised amount and qualification
General Temporal Cloud signup $150 in credits on Temporal’s general free-start and signup pages, accessed in 2026; the signup page stated a first-90-days no-risk trial and cancellation anytime.
AWS Summit Los Angeles $1,000 in free credits for AWS Summit attendees through AWS Marketplace, according to Temporal’s event page accessed in 2026.
Temporal AWS partner page Up to $1,000 in free credits, according to Temporal’s partner page accessed in 2026; surfaced copy did not establish universal eligibility.
Temporal startup program $6,000 in credits for eligible funded startups that have raised $30 million or less, according to Temporal’s startup page accessed in 2026.
Google Cloud for Startups $1,000 for three months, exclusively for startups referred by Google Cloud, according to Temporal’s page accessed in 2026.
AWS Activate $1,500 for AWS Activate Startups, according to Temporal’s offer page accessed in 2026.

These are different offers with different audiences and conditions; they should not be added together or treated as interchangeable. Before relying on a credit amount, confirm that the page is still current, that you qualify, and how the credits are applied and expire.

What can affect the bill after credits?

Temporal’s cost guide describes Cloud pricing as consumption-based, with Actions and Storage as cost factors. Its listed actions include workflow starts, activity starts and retries, signals, timers, child workflows, and search attribute updates. Retries and other workflow activity therefore matter when estimating use, not only the number of workflows initially launched.

The guide distinguishes active storage for open workflows from retained storage for closed workflow histories. Its then-current guidance said active storage was 40 times more expensive than retained storage; treat that as vendor-published, time-sensitive guidance, not a permanent rate. Check Temporal’s current pricing schedule for the applicable storage definitions and charges.

For the AWS Marketplace billing route, Temporal’s marketplace page accessed in 2026 listed $50 per million actions and a $100 monthly plan fee, prorated from the first billable action, with monthly pay-as-you-go billing through the customer’s AWS account. These are Marketplace-specific figures and may change. Confirm the current page and terms before estimating a bill; do not assume they describe every billing route.

When is Temporal Cloud a reasonable fit?

Temporal’s materials describe workflows including order fulfillment, payment processing, customer onboarding, AI agents, and other long-running work. The pattern is most relevant when an application coordinates multiple steps across unreliable APIs or needs work to continue after process or infrastructure failures. For example, an order workflow might coordinate payment, inventory, and fulfillment steps, with progress recorded as it proceeds.

  • Consider Cloud if you want Temporal to host the Temporal Service while your team continues to run the workers that execute application code.
  • Consider self-hosting if your team wants to operate the Temporal Service and database itself and can take on that operational work.
  • Estimate actual usage by considering action volume, including retries, active versus retained history storage, the billing route, and any plan or support costs.

Temporal’s reliability and productivity statements are vendor claims; they are not independent comparative performance results. The choice between Cloud and self-hosting is principally a choice about service operations, billing, and workload fit—not whether application workers disappear.
