Steam Deck does not run Nintendo Switch games through Proton. A separate Switch emulator handles them on SteamOS, and whether a particular game works depends on the emulator build, game and firmware data, settings, controls, and the Deck’s performance. Valve’s Deck Verified rating does not cover games run this way.
Which software layers are involved?
Steam Deck is a handheld PC running SteamOS, which Valve describes as Linux-based. Valve’s FAQ also explains that users can add non-Steam games to Steam and run them through Proton where appropriate. That gives the Deck a route for running software beyond games installed from the Steam store; it does not make every non-Steam program compatible. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ

Proton handles a different compatibility problem
Proton is Valve’s compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux. Valve says, “SteamOS also comes with Proton, a compatibility layer that makes it possible to run your games without any porting work needed from developers.” That statement concerns Windows games on SteamOS, not Nintendo Switch software. Valve’s Steam Deck software page
A Switch emulator handles the console software
A separate emulator, such as Ryujinx, attempts to reproduce the relevant behavior of Switch hardware and software so that a game can run on a different system. The project documentation describes emulating the console’s CPU and graphics behavior, with graphics support involving APIs such as OpenGL and Vulkan; it also mentions Metal through MoltenVK for applicable systems. These are general project capabilities, not a guarantee that a particular graphics backend or game will perform well on Steam Deck. Ryubing documentation

What happens when a Switch game is launched?
At a high level, the emulator reads the game and relevant system data, translates or reproduces the console’s instructions and graphics behavior for the host system, and passes input and audio through the software stack. SteamOS and Steam can provide the environment and a convenient way to launch the emulator, but they do not do the Switch emulation themselves.
Valve allows non-Steam applications to be added to the Steam library, which can provide a Steam or Game Mode launch route. Adding an emulator there changes how it is launched; it does not alter how well the emulator supports an individual game. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ

What does “compatible” mean for a game?
Compatibility is not a single yes-or-no threshold. A game might start but fail to render some scenes, accept only some inputs, run too slowly, crash later, or stop before completion. A useful report should say which outcome was reached and under what configuration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Compatibility question | What it establishes |
|---|---|
| Does it boot? | The game gets past launch far enough to begin running; this does not establish that it is playable. |
| Does it render correctly? | Graphics appear as intended in the observed scenes; a short session cannot establish correctness throughout the game. |
| Are controls usable? | The game responds to the configured inputs; this says nothing by itself about speed or stability. |
| Is performance usable? | Speed and frame pacing are acceptable for the reporter’s use. A claim should identify its settings and the portion of the game observed. |
| Is it stable? | The game avoids disruptive errors during the stated test period; stability for that period does not prove a full playthrough will succeed. |
| Can it be completed? | The reporter reached the end under the stated setup. This is a stronger claim than booting or playing briefly. |
Results can change with the emulator version, game version, firmware and other game data, graphics API, settings, controller configuration, and device performance. Ryubing’s documentation lists 8 GiB of RAM as a general minimum and warns that falling short may lead to poor performance or crashes; that software requirement is not a finding that every Steam Deck configuration will run a game well. Ryubing documentation The project’s setup guide discusses game files and installing firmware from an untrimmed XCI dump, but those technical details do not determine whether obtaining or using a particular copy is lawful. The cited project documentation does not provide a controlled, current, game-by-game compatibility matrix for a specified Steam Deck model. Treat claims such as “this game works” as incomplete unless they identify the emulator and game versions, firmware, settings, and what “works” means.
Does Valve’s Deck Verified rating apply?
No. Valve’s Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown labels are part of Valve’s review of Steam titles for Deck. The review criteria include input, display, seamlessness, and system support. A Switch game launched through a third-party emulator is not thereby included in that Steam-game review or awarded a Deck Verified status. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
What should you check in a compatibility report?
- Versions: the emulator build and game version, plus the firmware or other system data used.
- Observed result: whether the game booted, rendered correctly, accepted controls, ran at a usable speed, stayed stable, or was completed.
- Configuration: graphics API, relevant settings, and controller setup.
- Test scope: the Steam Deck model or configuration and how far into the game the report goes.
Without those details, reports from different people may describe different setups or different standards for “playable,” so they are not necessarily contradictory.

They do not establish a universal legal answer for all emulators, users, or jurisdictions. The Rhode Island federal court document in Nintendo of America Inc. v. Tropic Haze LLC, the Yuzu matter, is a consent judgment and permanent injunction in that specific case—not a contested ruling that every emulator or personal emulation act is unlawful. Consent judgment and permanent injunction
Separately, Nintendo’s August 17, 2026 DMCA notice hosted by GitHub alleges that certain Switch emulator repositories facilitate circumvention. That is Nintendo’s allegation in a takedown notice, not a court finding about every project, fork, user, or jurisdiction. Questions about emulator distribution, circumvention, copies of games, and personal use are distinct; these documents alone do not resolve them for every situation.
