On Nintendo Switch 2, save files stay in the console’s system memory—not on a game card or microSD Express card. Downloaded games, software updates, and DLC can use microSD Express storage. Physical releases vary: a regular game card and a game-key card are different formats, and a game-key card requires downloading the full game before play.
Where Switch 2 game data is stored
“Cartridge data” can mean several different things: the game data supplied with a physical release, later updates, add-on content, or save progress. They are not all stored in the same place.

- Save data: Stored in the console’s system memory, whether you play from a game card or a download. Nintendo says saves cannot be stored on microSD Express. For most games, save data is associated with the selected user. Nintendo’s data management FAQ explains the storage rules.
- Downloaded software, updates, and DLC: These can be stored on microSD Express. You can also use the console’s system memory, subject to the space available.
- Game data on a physical release: This depends on the card format and individual title. Nintendo’s general FAQ does not establish that every regular game card includes every update or the same amount of game data.
Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use, according to Nintendo. The company says no individual games currently require extra storage to play; expansion is optional, though it can provide room for more downloaded software, updates, and DLC. Check Nintendo’s current storage FAQ for the supported storage details.
Do Switch 2 physical games need downloads?
It depends on the specific release. Nintendo supports both regular game cards and game-key cards, and some physical titles use each format. A game-key card is a key that lets you download the game; it does not contain the full game itself. Nintendo says an internet connection and enough free space in system memory or microSD Express are needed for that download. The required storage is shown on the package and on the game’s Nintendo Store or eShop page. A Nintendo Account is not required to download game-key card data, according to Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview.

| What to check | Regular game card | Game-key card |
|---|---|---|
| Full game download required before playing | Not established as a universal rule by Nintendo’s general support information; check the specific title’s package or listing. | Yes. The full game is not included on the card. |
| Free storage needed | Depends on the specific title and any downloads it requires. | Enough space for the required game download; the package and official listing give the amount. |
| Internet needed to start playing | No universal requirement stated in Nintendo’s general card information; check the title. | Required for the first launch after download; later launches can be offline. |
| Card needed to launch the game | Insert the card to play its physical release. | Yes. Keep the game-key card inserted to play, even after downloading. |
Nintendo also supports compatible original Switch game cards, Switch 2 Edition cards, and Switch 2 exclusive software, including game-key cards. Compatibility for some original Switch software can vary because Switch 2 uses different hardware. Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition release bought in a store and its purchased upgrade pack contain the same content. See Nintendo’s game card instructions for card handling and compatibility information.
Can you play a game-key card offline?
Yes, after the game has been downloaded and launched once. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed for the first launch, but not for subsequent launches. The game-key card must still be inserted whenever you play. That makes it different from a digital purchase tied to your library: the download supplies the game data, while the card acts as the physical key.

How to download a game update
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game without opening it.
- Press the + or − button to open the software options.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
Nintendo’s support instructions use this route when addressing game-update issues. Updates are software data and can be stored on microSD Express, but Nintendo’s general material does not specify patch internals or say that every game handles update storage identically. For troubleshooting guidance, see Nintendo’s save-data and update support page.
What SD card does Switch 2 use?
For storage expansion, Switch 2 uses microSD Express. Do not assume that a generic microSD card will work for Switch 2 software storage: check that the product listing explicitly identifies the card as microSD Express. Nintendo does not name a preferred brand or recommend a particular capacity in its FAQ. Saves remain in system memory rather than on the expansion card.

- Look on the package or official game listing to identify whether it is a regular game card or game-key card.
- If it is a game-key card, confirm the required download size and make sure you have enough free system or microSD Express storage.
- If offline play matters, remember that a game-key card requires internet for the first launch after download, but later launches can be offline with the card inserted.
- Keep game-key cards away from magnets or magnetic objects for long periods; Nintendo warns that this could affect internal components and cause malfunction.
Game-key cards and microSD Express require Switch 2 system version 20.1.0, according to Nintendo’s system update history. System software changes over time; check the console’s System Update screen for the current version. Nintendo’s history lists version 20.1.1 as released June 4, 2025, with initial system features. See Nintendo’s system update history for version details.
