SWANS, a research platform reported in Science in September 2026, uses body tissue to carry simple electrical signals between wearable devices and implants. In a rat demonstration, those signals coordinated sensors and neural interfaces to control movement in two limbs. The result is a preclinical proof of concept—not a human medical system or a way to connect existing implants.
How can implants communicate through the body?
SWANS stands for Smart Wireless Autonomous Networking System. Rather than relying on a conventional radio link for every implant-to-implant message, it sends transient electric fields through tissue, which acts as a conductive path. The study describes injectable implant devices whose transistor circuits respond selectively to pulses with specific characteristics. The devices use negligible power while listening, according to the study authors; the abstract does not give a numerical power figure. The study abstract and Georgia Tech’s account describe the system and its intended division of work.

That division matters: SWANS is designed for small, simple messages, such as detecting that a signal is present or triggering an action. A wearable hub handles larger data exchanges and computation. It is therefore a coordination and trigger network, not a replacement for high-throughput wireless connections.
What did the researchers demonstrate?
The published in-vivo demonstration was in rats. The study reports coordinated networks of sensors and neural interfaces enabling wireless dual-limb motor control. Georgia Tech describes a sensor detecting movement of a rat’s front paw and triggering another device to stimulate a muscle in its hind leg. The study abstract also names tests spanning epidermal, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal and gastrointestinal spaces; these are study settings, not evidence of equivalent performance in people.

- COROS Heart Rate Monitor armband is designed for measuring heart rate during sports and activities. It is not intended to aid in collecting heart rate data for daily tracking purposes.
- Please note: this product includes a USB charging cable, but does not include a Type-C adapter. COROS Heart rate monitor with large band - Arm size (Large): 9.4 to 16.9 inches (24 to 43 cm)
- MULTIPLE CONNECTIONS: The COROS heart rate monitor chest strap is designed to work seamlessly with your COROS watches and apps, it can also simultaneously pair with up to three devices, including Sports Watches, Indoor Trainers, Bike, Computers, Phones, Apps, Treadmills, and Indoor Rowers. Connects via Bluetooth only, not compatible with ANT+.
- COMFORTABLE AND QUICK CLEANING: The fabric band is soft and breathable, more comfortable to wear than a chest strap. You can quickly clean the band by removing the sensor of COROS heart rate monitor chest strap .
- EASY TO WEAR and FLEXIBLE FIT: The band of COROS heart rate monitor lays flat around your arm and locks in place with its textured surface. Set the perfect placement and tension on the elasticated band by sliding the buckle.
Georgia Tech senior author Alex Abramson, an assistant professor in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, described the design goal this way: “With our system, you can now place sensors in the best possible place to detect a biological signal and place actuators in the best possible place to perform a therapeutic action.” He also said, “They don’t need to be connected, aligned, or even near each other; they can just send signals to each other through the surrounding tissue.” These statements explain the intended flexibility of the network; the demonstrated result remains an animal proof of concept.
How does SWANS compare with Bluetooth?
The study authors report more than tenfold greater tissue communication coverage than Bluetooth. The accessible abstract does not specify the complete benchmark methods or test conditions, so that comparison should be understood as the paper’s reported result—not a general claim that SWANS outperforms Bluetooth in every setting.

Can a wearable use SWANS to tell an implant to stimulate a nerve?
The rat demonstration shows the basic concept of a sensor-triggered action: a movement signal detected at one site prompted stimulation at another. It does not establish that a consumer wearable can command a patient’s nerve implant, or that SWANS can control existing pacemakers, insulin pumps or neurostimulators. The system described is research hardware, and the sources do not identify a compatible consumer accessory.

Has SWANS been tested in people or made available?
The cited study and Georgia Tech account describe a rat demonstration; they do not establish human studies, regulatory clearance, clinical benefit, launch timing or commercial availability. No purchasable SWANS system or compatible accessory is identified in those sources. Therapeutic coordination across implants is a research possibility, not an available medical service or product.
