A fan-made video imagines Chrono Trigger in HD-2D, but it is not a playable remake. Vandal’s June 21, 2023 report says creator Dott made a short visual concept and had no playable demo planned. A separate fan project recreates one scene as a Windows download; it is not the same work and is not a full-game remake.
Is the Chrono Trigger HD-2D concept playable?
No. The project behind the “gorgeous HD-2D overhaul” headline is a video concept by Dott, reported by Vandal on June 21, 2023. The report describes a short demonstration of how the role-playing game might look with an HD-2D treatment; it says no playable demo was planned. It should not be described as a released remake, a complete overhaul, or a game you can download.

There is a separate, small fan-made project: tyanuziello’s itch.io page lists a name-your-own-price Windows download that recreates the End of Time scene in Godot. It is a scene recreation, not Dott’s video and not a complete version of Chrono Trigger.

What HD-2D means
HD-2D blends pixel-art characters and visual elements with richly rendered 3D environments. In an August 22, 2023 interview with Epic Games, developers from Square Enix and Acquire discussed the artistic and technical work involved in making pixel-art figures feel integrated with 3D backgrounds, lighting, and camera movement. That interview is about the official production of Octopath Traveler II; it does not explain how Dott made the fan video.

Square Enix producer Masashi Takahashi described the appeal and risk of the style this way: “Although we wanted to create a 2D pixel game, which some people might consider a classic style, we were concerned that others might see it as just plain old and outdated.”
What official Chrono Trigger release is available?
Square Enix lists an official Steam edition of Chrono Trigger. Its store description follows Crono and Marle from a meeting at the Millennial Fair into a journey across eras after a teleportation accident. It also lists higher-resolution graphics and sound, updated controls, the Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum dungeons, Active Time Battle Version 2, and combination Tech attacks. Those features belong to the official game edition, not the fan concept.

Official games that use HD-2D
LIVE A LIVE is an official comparison rather than evidence of a Chrono Trigger remake. Square Enix described its revival as using the same HD-2D visual style as Octopath Traveler and announced PlayStation and Steam availability in its March 30, 2023 announcement. The Epic Games interview also identifies Octopath Traveler II as a Square Enix and Acquire game and, as of that August 2023 article, lists PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 platforms.

These games show what an official HD-2D release can look like; visual resemblance does not establish shared assets, code, teams, or an announcement about Chrono Trigger.

Other fan projects are separate
A further concept appeared in a DSOGaming report dated October 26, 2025: NOBL Games reimagined Chrono Trigger as a third-person RPG using Unreal Engine 5. The report said it had no download link and no plans for public release at that time. This is distinct from both Dott’s HD-2D video and tyanuziello’s End of Time scene recreation.
